The SC-HT900 handles the audio end of your home theater, providing surround sound decoding, amplification, and playback through a specially matched six-speaker system (left, center, right, left and right surround, and low-frequency subwoofer). Its versatility with media playback--from DVD-Video and DVD-Audio to MP3/WMA CDs and JPEG image CDs--means you're never far from favorite movies, music, or digital photos. The five-disc carousel system's DVD-Audio playback offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound. DVD-Audio discs provide multichannel and stereo sound, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.
DVD movies look and sound great through the system's 54 MHz/10-bit video decoder, video depth enhancer, progressive-scan video output (for use with high-definition and HD-ready televisions), and Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS discrete 5.1-channel surround decoding and rendering. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. This feature can only be appreciated on high-definition and HD-ready TVs.
The speaker set includes four specially designed "tallboy" floorstanding speakers (front and rear left and right) powered by 35 watts each, a 140-watt center-channel speaker (critical for handling most of a movie's dialogue), and a powerful, 150-watt subwoofer optimized for unobtrusive placement. The left/right/surround speakers stand 41 inches tall, a height designed to align them with a television screen for seamless sound/image matching. All speakers are magnetically shielded to protect your TV from distortion induced by the speakers' magnetic fields. A digital-synthesized FM/AM tuner lets you listen to favorite radio stations.
What's in the Box
DVD player/receiver, 4 slim "tallboy" speakers with detachable stands, 1 center-channel speaker, 1 powered subwoofer, and all requisite basic cabling.
Customer Reviews:
I wish I had known........2006-09-15
Quite simply, I was totally dissapointed. If I had kown then what a total pile of junk this was I would have done more home work. If anyone thinks about getting this, STOP! I was a long time Panasonic buyer but never again.
Great Value, but the Infamous Popping is a Killer.......2006-05-14
I realize this is a very old product now, but you never know if some unsuspecting person is out there seeing it on auction sites from previous owners trying to unload it.
It is indeed a very attractive system for the price we all paid for it when we bought it and took it home. The surround-sound is impressive for the price, the look is stylish for something so cheap. It's not all that complex to operate either.
But the heart-attacking-inducing loud pops really are awful. Just awful. They ruin TV-watching. They ruin cocktail parties. They ruin those romantic moments. They ruin that soothing after-work music. I have owned this system now since it came out about 3 years ago, and I'll hang on to it a little longer cuz the pops seem to be ebbing just a bit lately and I travel so much for work now that I'm rarely home. But I will be going Bose next -- and recommending to all you folks out there thinking of buying this system from a previous owner --- DOOOO NOOOOT DOOOOO ITTTT!!!! PLEEEEEASE!! (Unless you're literally deaf.)
Don't let the looks fool you.......2006-01-30
I usually don't leave product reviews but because I feel burned so badly on this one I had to say something to warn everyone else. I was actually online searching for a way to remedy the popping and hissing, thinking I must have been doing something wrong, and then I ran across other reviews that were stating the same problem that I am having. This system really is pathetic peace of junk and I have been totally embarrassed by them on more than one occasion. They will pop and hiss (loudly) then the sound will totally disappear. Forget this system and don't give Panasonic another dime. If I were looking for a new system I would go with Bose. Yes, Bose systems are expensive but they know have payment options on their website and I can guarantee you won't get these types of reviews form their system.
Stay away from Panasonic!.......2004-12-24
Customer Service - the Panasonic website claims this is very important to them. I had my home theater only 3-4 months when a VCR tape got stuck. I has now been at the service center for almost 4 months! When I am lucky enough to get a response from Panasonic (which is rare), they make promises of completion and/or replacement. But promises won't play the DVD's my family would have liked to watch together over the holidays. When we finally got through to the customer service center on the phone, they had the nerve to hand up on us twice. IF YOU WANT A COMPANY TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS - STAY AWAY FROM PANASONIC!!! I have truly given up hope of even getting my home theater back from the Panasonic service center.
Sounded Great at First.......2004-11-03
My wife selected this system because of the speakers and stands. I must admit that it sounded great for the price, at first. Several months of use and we got the same heart attack inducing popping sounds reported in most of the reviews here. The subwoofer/amp is extremely hot and the fan has stopped working. Panasonic was less than helpful, so I pulled it apart and found that even though the fan was good, the board would not supply any voltage to it. I would highly advise to go with another brand, as I will myself will be avoiding anything marked "Panasonic" in the future.
