Wish I could give zero stars..........2007-04-17
Rio Nitrus is the worst electronic item I have owned in my 23 years on this earth. In the 2 years I have owned it, it has not performed reliably for more than 2 weeks at a time. It continues to display the UPGRADER message, a problem which is unresolved by upgrading the firmware, as Tech Support will direct you to do. It just spontaneously starts working again on its own, and will work fine until it feels like stopping to work again. Also, when I try to put mp3's on the player it states that the song is either in use or nonexistent, neither of which is the case. Additionally, the longer the Rio stays working, more and more songs become corrupted, which causes the Rio to shut itself off mid-song more and more frequently. I would rather have no mp3 player at all than have the Rio Nitrus. I do not recommend you purchase it.
Poor joystick design.......2006-12-15
I had no problems with charging, battery endurance or transferring files. The player is big and clunky in comparison to others. The real problem is that the joystick protrudes from the unit face. Put the player in your pocket and the darned thing will keep shutting off due to accidentally pushing the joystick.

Ok i bought this off ebay about a year or 2 ago and havent had any problems since. The program to put music on it is easy to use, and if you cant handle that you can use windows media, and if that doesnt work you can just drag and drop when it shows up on my computer, even though one idiot on here said you cant. My second complait with the abundance of dumbness here is that they say the scroll wheel is useless. B.S! This is the only thing i ever use. you can scroll through artists and select songs with it i only use the song for play/stop ff/rw. Lastly battery is great. Accidently left it running for 8 hours yesterday, didnt die on me. Also, apparently dont update as it causes problems ive never updated, never had a problem. Go to ebay and get a new one yourself for 65$ like i did.
one question - deleting songs...........2006-04-20
I've had my Nitrus about 6 months and use it everyday. Had a few problems but overall pleased with. Is there a way to delete a song from the unit w/out having to plug it back into the computer and pull up the software? I haven't found a "delete" button anywhere. My daughter's $20 MP3 player has one...unfortunately. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Paul
I Liked It So Well I Bought A Rio Carbon.......2006-04-20
I've had my Rio for two years now, and two months after I got it I dropped it about three feet onto the cement. It pushed the volume button up inside the unit, and I thought it was all over, but I pulled it out with a pair of tweezers, and the player still works, including the volume button. I did have some problems with it going to a certain song and restarting spontaneously and also the clicking hard drive. I reformatted the hard drive and reloaded the songs and discovered it was the songs, not the hard drive that was making it shut off. On most of them, I was able to recopy them from the CD and that seemed to solve the problem, whatever it was. The ones I couldn't recopy or that still caused the unit to restart, I just left off the song list. It holds so much music, I haven't missed them.
It is a little annoying that it doesn't have a carrying case, seems it would be easy enough to make a little leather pouch that would clip to your belt, but the unit is so small it fits easily in a shirt or pants pocket. I just make sure I take everything else out, so it doesn't get scratched up. I have had a problem with lint getting under the plastic over the digital readout, but it hasn't affected the performance, so no big deal.
I did have a problem with a short in the earbuds and had to replace them, but I was happier with a better set of earphones anyway. The tone quality of the unit is excellent, and the volume goes loud enough that it's uncomfortable at the highest level.
As for the battery life, sixteen hours is probably about right. I used to play it while I was a work, and I never had to charge it while I was there. I even had a chance to test the low battery warning. I turned it on one day, and the readout was flashing. I locked the unit and put it in my pocket, figuring I'd be out of tunes in about thirty minutes. Three and a half hours later, it finally shut itself off. Pretty amazing.
I was so happy with the unit, that I bought another Nitrus for a friend, and then when I was ready to upgrade, bought myself a Carbon. I would think twice before I went with anything else. Excellent and inexpensive product.

It will function for about 3 weeks after the warrenty expires and then die. Go online and read the rio users forum. If you buy this product you will regret it.
Very good for the money.......2005-12-25
This is my first MP3 player. I just recieved it today as a Christmas present. So far, I am satisfied with this product. HOWEVER, there are some problems. When I took it out of the package, there was a very little chip on the corner of the back. Adding to this problem, there are some scratches on this product.
Other than those minor problems, I highly suggest you get the refurbished unit. 1.5 GB for this price is very good (although the actual compacity is about 1.3 GB). Uploading songs through the provided USB cord is very fast and easy(I am using Windows Media Player).
Overall, this product is very good for the money. I recommend the refurbished unit.
great in the short ter.......2005-11-23
YEP, I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN I GOT THIS RIO. IT WORKED GREAT, LOOKED COOLER THAN AN IPOD (SUCKERS), THE ONLY THING THAT PISSED ME OFF STRAIGHT AWAY WAS THAT I COULDN'T MAKE A PLAY LIST WHEN OUT & ABOUT....HOWEVER, I GOT OVER THAT.
THE REST, MY GOD. I EVEN CONVINCED MY MATE TO GET ONE. BIG MISTAKE. I FEEL ITS MY FAULT. MINE GOT FAULTY ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER HAVING IT, IT WOULDN'T CHARGE PROPERLY, THEN MIRACULOUSLY STARTED CHARGING AGAIN (?) ....HERS STARTED DOING THE SAME. NOW I CAN'T EVEN TRANSFER MUSIC TO IT, COMPUTERS DON'T ACKNOWLEDGE THE DEVICE AND THE DIVICE SEEMS NOT TOO BOTHERED ABOUT A COMPUTER EITHER...SO...
WHO KNOWS, MAYBE ITS A COINSIDENCE,
AS I SAID, ITS GOOD IN THE SHORT TERM.
Nitrus Nice Package for $69.98, Refurbed...so far so good!.......2005-11-18
I ordered the refurbed Nitrus from Amazon. So far so good, everything arrived like it was new. Free shipping from UPS, I got it in exactly 5 days after ordering it. I charged the unit for 5 hours, and loaded 1.47GB worth of MP3's as it was charging. Mine came with a silver-colored stick button instead of the red one pictured on the ads. I wonder if that means it is a refurbished unit? The Rio-ware CD works really well with XP SP2 and USB2 port the transfer speed is great - 4 songs at about 4 MB each take about 7 seconds. My unit arrived with firmware ver 1.23, so no need to flash it. So far, sounds great, had to adjust the contrast since it arrived with the display almost transparent, hard to navigate until I adjusted it. Using other headphones now, have not tried out the ones that came with it. You can hear minimal clicking of the HD and slight vibration, so you remember that it is not a flash-based player. I am giving this to my girlfriend anyways to replace her Dell DJ with a bad HD. So far (12 hours) it is flawless, arrived with no scratches or flaws. Would recommend. Not giving 5 stars since the 90-day warranty should have been 180 day instead. Buttons are rather smallish, but click well. Sort menu for play is querky for navigating the menu. Would have been even better if an arm band were included.
