Amazon.com Review

Slim enough to fit into any pocket or small bag, the Casio XG-3 is a great choice for minidisc listeners who are on the go and on a medium-range budget. Thanks to 40-second antiskip protection and a durable metal casing, we found this unit to be reliable and tough enough to provide a smooth, uninterrupted audio experience in almost any active setting.

As with most minidisc players on the market today, Casio includes a handy inline remote control that clips to a shirt or jacket and lets you control playback without having to dig the body of the unit out of your pocket. The volume, playback buttons, bass-boost adjustment, and lighted display are all accessible from this round remote control, which also accommodates the headphone jack. Though easily accessed, these buttons are tiny and proved a bit difficult to manipulate when we took the XG-3 jogging.

The remote also includes a backlit blue display, allowing you to see in low lighting (watch for battery drain) and providing the ability to change the text information that displays as the minidisc plays. Data shown includes current track number, elapsed time, and song name. When the minidisc stops, it can display the total number of tracks, playing time, or name of the LP.

Casio provides a generous length of cord with the XG-3: 28-inches from the minidisc player to the inline remote, along with a 45-inch cord for headphones. If you are wearing a big jacket, this cord length is perfect. If not, however, we found the excess cord between the headphones and the unit itself to be potentially entangling with a body in motion.

The sound on the headphones will suffice, and there are even two extra bass boosters. But the headphones themselves are so light that they often slip off--especially if you have a lot of hair. Fortunately, the 0.125-inch jack is compatible with other headphones of the same size.

The most obvious fault of this minidisc player is its lack of recording capabilities. However, with its focus on portability and all the convenience features we look for in a minidisc player of this price category, the Casio XG-3 is an excellent all-around unit for enjoying prerecorded minidiscs wherever you go. --Robyn Bell

1 out of 5 stars Dismal Failure/POOR Quality.......2001-11-03

I did buy this Nov 24, 2000 (I have the receipt) as a gift for my son. Almost immediately it began skipping, ignoring tracks, or not playing entire discs. I found that some low-end minidiscs (such as Hi-Space) will not play on these low-end players [see alt.audio.minidisc]. I did, however contact Casio and they quite cordially gave me all the information to send it in under warranty. Haven't got it back yet, but we'll see how it acts upon it's return. Just be aware that there are known problems with this and other low-end units [see xxx for complete write-ups and comparisons]

1 out of 5 stars Nice price but poor performance.......2001-08-03

This product was quite disappointing. The player skips often and the life of the batteries is short. One Duracell will play one 74 minute MD. The sound of the system is fine when working. The headphones are poor.

2 out of 5 stars great price, looks good, sounds good, but...........2001-04-03

when i first opened up the box and listened to it, I thought it sounded great. I liked the remote thing and everything else. I then noticed that it wouldn't play half the tracks on my minidisks... they play just fine with my other player. So i returned this product. As far as minidisks go, Casio does not seem to be one of the major players and i believe i know why now. Maybe it was just mine but i returned it in a matter of an hour of recieving it...

1 out of 5 stars Bad Player.......2001-03-06

I purchased one of these, looking for a player only to keep in my car. I found that it often wouldn't even read a disc, and skipped a lot. I was unable to nordic ski without it skipping on me. It also had a very very short battery life. I may have just received a lemon, but compared to my Sharp portable this one was horrible. It's worth an extra $30-40 for a better player.

4 out of 5 stars Small Price for Convenience.......2001-03-05

I was thinking of buying a second battery for my Aiwa MD recorder. It ran $60 or so, with shipping. I bought this unit for $99, and simply use rechargeables or an AA alkaline. Having a recorder and a player means the MD disks are a little more useful. Having a unit with a standard battery is easier for travel. Why lug the AC adapter or, worse, forget it?

The unit has good sound. I play it through a set of speakers and a sub-woofer. The remote is not terribly impressive, but it works. I'm not sure why you have to use the remote, but you do.

This unit isn't that much bigger than a memory based MP3 player. You can carry a few disks around. If you have a toslink CD player, the MD disks are effortless to make, though this unit is NOT a recorder. But overall, MD seems like a nice format and when you make digital to digital transfers, all you have to do is program the tracks and start both machines. If you buy a new CD, you can record all the tracks and remove the ones you don't like.
