Product Description
Digital Reference Series headphones derive the maximum benefit from digital sound sources, including compact disc, DAT and MiniDisc. Aura-Nomic design corresponds to the natural angle of the ear; it eliminates excess pressure and provides more natural, more balanced sound. 40 mm diameter driver is larger than most headphones for deeper bass, lower distortion and wider dynamic range. Higher-power Neodymium magnet packs 30% more energy than conventional Neodymium. Oxygen-free copper (OFC) cord provides maximum conductivity with minimum noise. Closed earpads allow for superlative isolation from outside sounds, high effective signal-to-noise ratio. Self-adjust headband enables maximum listening comfort, hour after hour. The headphones incorporate Sony UniMatch plug system with fixed mini plug for portable use and detachable phone plug for home hi-fi use. Gold-plated plugs resist corrosion for high conductivity, low noise.
Amazon.com Review
If you're looking for a set of reference-quality headphones that don't cost a fortune (or induce headaches), Sony's MDR-CD570 Digital Reference model may be your answer. These 'phones are detailed and dynamic, offer a wide frequency response, and are comfortable to boot.
The MDR-CD570's "Aura-nomic" design positions the drivers in consonance with the angle of your ears, resulting in not only more natural sound but a more comfortable fit--and comfort is definitely a must if you're going to wear headphones for longer than 15 minutes at a stretch. Augmenting the MDR-CD570's high comfort level is a self-adjusting head strap and large, cushioned ear pads.
Sonically, the MDR-CD570 is one of the best headsets we've heard. Only a handful of headphones can boast of (and deliver) true deep bass information, and the MDR-CD570 is one of them. We auditioned them with a stack of our most challenging CDs and found that not only did the MDR-CD570 deliver deep, rich, and well-defined bass, they did so without inducing a hint of fatigue. High frequencies sounded natural and extended, with no "tizz" or excessive brightness. The midrange frequencies were also excellent. Vocals, cello, piano, and sax were equally well-served, blending beautifully with the rest of their respective arrangements.
Audio manufacturers often use the words "digital" and "reference" to impress novice consumers. With the MDR-CD570 headphones, Sony's "Digital Reference" is not a hollow boast but a promise well delivered.
Pros:
- Outstanding sound
- Very well made
- Extremely comfortable
Cons:
- Too large for true portability

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, dynamic sound, great fit.......2006-03-31
It doesn't appear that Sony makes these 'phones any more and that's a shame. They're a great model.
I got them from my mother after my six yr old destroyed my other, cheaper set of Sony 'phones. They are simply awesome. I have very eclectic musical tastes, from Rush to Bach to Miles Davis to Frank Sinatra and these headphones handle all these very different styles of music with brilliant clarity and response. And this bass is truly remarkable.
My mother bought them a few years back and paid, she told me, about a $100 new. A real deal considering the fantastic quality. Sony's quality may be suffering in some other product lines, but these phones uphold the Sony reputation built by Trinitrons and other top o' the line products.
For gaming they are also fantastic. With the latest generation of games, e.g. Quake 4, Doom 3, et al, the audio has improved tremendously. As another reviewer notes, when an explosion goes off, or a machine gun starts its run or a sniper file cracks, it sound as if you're actually standing in the middle of the game's environment.
Even older games such as Diablo II, one my all time favs--D&D come to life, the sound is much improved by the immersive environment. While giggly co-workers no longer disrupt my listening experience, these nicely keep out a wild six year and a cranky wife.
I've yet to find a task that these 'phones don't handle effortlessly.
I've never heard headphones sound this good for under $300. Hopefully whatever Sony's used to replace these 'phones in their catalog are just as good. They will be a hard act to follow.
Since you're unlikley to find a pair to buy (you could get lucky at a garage sale I suppose, if you do, GRAB THEM!), if someone offers them to you as a gift, grab 'em immediately. You'll be amazed.
I just wish its cord were coiled........2003-08-17
Good reproduction of low frequencies.
Good rejection of ambient giggling of female coworkers.
Excellent for Gaming.......2003-06-19
These headphones have the best sound for a closed phone under $100. IMO. I like closed phones for gaming because when I don't hear outside sounds I feel more immersed in the game. These have a very good bass response and my whole world shakes when there is an explosion in a game. And they are very, very comfortable. Music sounds so good on these that I went back and listed to all my CDs again. I am truly blown away by the sound.
I have them plugged in to the analog output of my nforce2 soundstorm. You definately don't need an amp with these. They are way louder than the portable Altec Lansing phones I had before.
