Product Description
You know why movies are more exciting in theaters? It's all that glorious bass, demanding your full attention and engaging your senses. So if you're ready to experience the full impact of movies and music at home from the best the entertainment industry has to offer, JBL is taking reservations now. The LFE input bypasses the subwoofer's internal, user-adjustable low-pass crossover network, to avoid unnecessary reprocessing of the Low-Frequency Effects channel of the digital soundtrack. The result will rock the room with floor-shaking effects like explosions, earthquakes or even the rumbling of the engines in an airplane. This model features the following inputs: line-level (switchable to LFE) and speaker-level with gold-plated 5-way binding posts.
Customer Reviews:
Great product while it works.......2007-04-25
As others have indicated, this unit is fantastic when it's working. The problem is this unit is highly unreliable. I've had mine for approx 3 years and the unit has failed twice. The first failure was the power supply, which was replaced at my cost at a local service center. Now the unit apparently has a problem with the circuitry; it produces almost no sound, while the few decibels it does produce is nothing more than a distorted rattle (the cone is perfect). To make matters worse, my local service center is no more, and there are no service areas within a couple of hundred miles of my house. In order to find my "local" service center now, I get to place a long-distance call to JBL (no 800 phone number). No thanks. I've already spent $350 on a $250 unit only to have it fail again. I'll consider this a costly lesson in JBL's quality and customer service. Hopefully you're reading this as part of your homework before you make a purchase. I wish I had done that.
The E250P will die on you!.......2007-04-16
Great subwoofer WHILE IT LASTS! I had a PB12, same subwoofer except it was a down-firing design. Exact same circuit board! I mostly used it for TV audio. It died 3 months after the 1 year warranty was up. I found out on the internet that was typical, and JBL would not repair them! It was a flawed design!
So I contacted the the Harman Consumer Group (JBL) and they sold me a replacement E250P for about $250. This one lasted almost 2 years! It has the exact same circuit board as the PB12, and the exact same fried componentsI Good luck with your JBL piece of junk!
very pleased.......2006-05-06
I am very pleased with this SUB I have been using it for at least 4 -5 years and it still shakes my hole house. I have the JBL Northwood set, and I would buy another one if I had to
Wonderful.......2006-03-12
I've run this unit for 3 years now, and the sound is great. I have the crossover set to 100hz via the LFE channel in my Pioneer VSX-412, and it seems to be perfect. Is doesn't have the size to shake the house during the beginning of Also Sprach Zarathustra, but I don't expect anything smaller than 18 inches to play 15Hz well. Because I don't much care for having my bass 90 degrees out of phase, I turned mine on its side and made it a front firing sub, until I just recently aquired an E250P. Now I have the PB12 sitting behind my seat in the normal position for added movie explosion coolness with the E250P up front. I've never had an issue with mine, but I never run it higher than 60-70 percent of its capability, usually around 40 to 50 percent.
The sound is not muddy, and has clarity. It doesn't drop off until about 25hz according to my Db meter. I'd recommend this sub to anybody looking for the great sound. From what I've read, you might have issues, but I can only imagine that it was caused by Snoop Dogg at high volume settings, or anything else with massive bass at high volume settings. Electronics are electronics, they don't vary much, and I have never had an issue. I'm obviously doing something different. I don't use the high level inputs, just the LFE in. Maybe that is a reason?
I might suggest you don;t follow the advise to stay away from JBL altogether by some reviewers below. Everybody make a mistake. Just cause one product of hundreds has an issue, it does not make the rest bad.
Powerful and problem free.......2006-01-19
It sounds like I have eluded the experiences of some of the folks who have purchased this unit (maybe I am just not pressing the unit to the limits of operation). I have had absolutely trouble free operation of this unit (which I have connected to my sub output of my Yamaha RX-V400 AMP). It provides accurate and chest damping bass (OK maybe that's not a word) and has not disappointed at all in the 3 years that I have had it. Typical use has been to pound out the low bass with DVD movies like Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars.
