I owe alot to this little camera. I just bought the nikon D80 and I am keeping it because it has never let me down. It got me a job as a photographer with it's clear images and high resolution my clients were always stunned (i do architecture photography)...I now have a very succsessful freelance business and I am a PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER!
I can't say enough on how much I appreciate the opportunity this camera gave me. I LOVE THIS CAMERA!!!
Also I may add its a trooper...
I have used and abused and never has it gotten wierd...
People look at it and always tell me"wow big camera it looks very professional...and i would laugh and say nope its a pro-sumer camera...but its feels like a pro!

The Shutter Lag and EVF Will Drive You Nuts.......2006-01-27

If you're looking to capture "The Decisive Moment" with the Nikon Coolpix 8400, STOP---DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!!! For that matter, carefully check any digicam or other camera with which you want to capture "action," because what you think you see, may not be what the camera has the ability to capture as an image.
Let me briefly explain where I'm coming from: I made my living as a field photojournalist for 40 years. By the time I retired out of the business I had probably created something like a million color and b&w film images. I owned and used mostly Nikon equipment all those years (although I sure liked working with Leica rangefinder cameras and short focal length lenses), starting with the original Nikon F SLR (which I still have) and finishing up with the N90S and probably ten different lenses of varying focal lengths. I like Nikon equipment a lot.
I decided to begin working with digital images last year. I was attracted to the Coolpix 8400 because the "spread" on the zoom lens was the 35mm camera equivalent of 24mm--85mm. When I worked with film I probably used my 24mm and 105mm Nikkors more than any others in my bag, so this little Coolpix beauty had just about what I was looking for in one package.
Let me say that while the problems with the viewfinder and shutter lag make this camera absolutely useless for editorial photojournalism, it is, nevertheless, a marvel of human ingenuity. For many other uses---such as taking pictures of fire hydrants or cows standing in a pasture (put another way, things that don't move), it works wonderfully well.
Seriously, I shot an assignment here in Tucson that was essentially architectual in nature. The images can only be described as superb (if I do say so myself). I worked only with the camera and a tripod on the shoot. Working inside I simply changed the light balance within the menu on the 8400 (which you can pretty much do on any digital camera these days), did not have to check the scene with a separate exposure meter, etc. Point being that with film I often carried a bunch of light balancing filters and sometimes a separate Gossen exposure meter and all sorts of lights to shoot an assignment. Even then, I'd sweat blood until I could get the processed film on a light table. Of course with digital, I (you) don't have to worry about any of that stuff. One can check the image immediately and know instantly if you're good to go.
Alas, the shutter lag on this, and many other digital cameras made these days, is the "downcheck" which makes me unable to recommend the 8400. There is also the delay in the electronic viewfinder to deal with. The combination of shutter and viewfinder lag make it absolutely impossible to capture an image, the precise composition of which lasts only a split-second. I have taken many good pictures of people working, "action" shots and the like, but it was only by taking large numbers of images of any given activity and then retaining the one or two that said what I intended that I achieved my purpose. Essentially, my shooting eye (which is pretty damned good) had nothing to with it. It's like a soldier trying to kill an enemy with a machine-gun---if he fires enough rounds, one of them is going to hit the other guy. Marksmanship has nothing to do with it. Same-same shooting with electronic viewfinders and shutter lag. If you shoot enough images, statistically you're probably going to get a good one. But it's not a very good way to do things.
So if you're looking to capture what Henri Cartier-Bresson (I'm not sure I've spelled his name correctly) so artfully described as "The Decisive Moment," look at a digital single-lens reflexes, or wait for improvements in digicams.

My Best Buy of the Year!.......2006-01-15

This camera proved to perform better than I expected. Easy to operate, yet has so many bells and whistles. There are several tools and capabilities that come with this camera, it is very important to read the manual in its entirety in order to maximize the benefits. The basics stuff on it is so good it might deceive you into thinking you got it all. Its wide angle lens coupled with high resolution is an excellent solution for photographing my artwork for further work on my computer or for reproductions/printing.

Nikon All the Way!.......2006-01-10

This my 3rd Nikon Coolpix. 995, 4500 and now the 8400. Excellant photos, controls and the wideangle is terrific. Nothing short of what I expected. I could go on and on about its great auto and manual features. However, just a word of what I don't like. No ability to connect a remote control, probably just my gripe, but would have been nice to still utilize the USB port and the Nikon remote or the after market digi-snap that I used on my 995 or 4500. Oh well. ALso, the limited ability to use various threaded filters for the len. Nikon's (3) selections are limited. I have found that a 37mm adapter to 52 or 55mm will work...but you still have to watch out very carefully not to cross thread putting it on AND taking it off. Lastly, when using their 3X tele converter from the 995 or 4500 it becomes a fixed focal length no zoom at all. Also their 2X works as well for the applications I have use that on. If you can live with these short comings you just love the output from the 8400. I also had to adjust when using the "extra fine", getting 132 photos on a 1 GiG CF card.

Great remote.......2007-06-27

For $20, no one should be without this remote. I bought it and used it for a few days just to mess around with. Then I didn't touch it for about a week. One day I decided to shoot some sparklers and firecrackers just to experiment with. The remote made it easy to light something, get out of the frame and take the shot, without having to run to the camera to press the shutter button. I've also used it for nighttime shots of the moon, and a family portrait at a reunion. It makes for absolutely no camera shake when taking long exposure shots, and makes it easy to not be behind your camera when taking the photo.

I highly recommend this. It comes with everything needed to use it, and as I said, for $20 you can't afford not to have this.

One of those things you can't live without........2007-06-22

What a nifty little device. I use the remote with my D40x/tripod and its very easy to master. FYI, it does not come with instructions - for that, please refer to your camera's user manual. The remote itself is very thin/small in size - great addition to your camera bag.

The remote works very well with my D80. Indoors or if the camera has nearby objects, the IR beam seems to bounce off and reach from any angle, even directly behind and from at least 10ft away (I didn't have more room). Outside without surrounding objects, I was able to fire it from a side. I think its a great product. Match it with a Joby Gorilla tripod an you get easy to setup and trigger shots at night or in low lights.

This remote is no powerhouse, you have to be fairly close to the camera however for the cost it's well worth having. It comes with a little pouch that attaches to your camera's strap. Once attached you don't even know it's there.

This cable is a unique USB cable for a Nikon digital camera. The only problem is I couldn't find the darn thing anywhere. It is a functional piece of equipment for certain but nothing super special.

I've never seen anything like it! You plug it into a recharger, and it gets filled with electricity! Then, you use the electricity until it's all gone--and you can do it over and over--many times! 4gb microdrive, batteries all charged up on my Canon EOS 20D. Excited to use the camera at my nephew's graduation. Brother, wanted copies of the pics that I had taken. Much to MY DISAPOINTMENT, went to download the images to my computer, and there's NADA, nothing. I've use a dozen different programs to 'recover' loss data/images, but nothing. I didn't delete any of the pics. I didn't know there's a problem of loss data with the microdrives. Here I am, thinking I'm all set, ready to take pics, and didn't even get one photo. So, with my experience I will not buy another one, and that's why 1 star.

Card crashed after less than a year........2007-04-09

If I had written this review two weeks ago I would be leaving five stars.

I've had this card for less than a year, and use it with my Nikon D70s. I always take great care when handling it, never pressing on the front and back, dropping, or severely jostling it.

I took a few photos and went directly inside to transfer them to my computer, but when the drive mounted everything was garbled and all of my data was gone. I popped it back in my camera to confirm the loss of my photos, and the error read "Card Not Formatted." I then attempted to format the card via my camera, but it would not format. When trying to format it from a computer it just crashed the entire system (multiple machines.) The card is now utterly useless!

I had read of this happening but assumed it was user negligence in some way and bought it anyway. Don't take a chance! Stick with a non-moving CF card instead.

Well, I had the Hitachi 4 GB Microdrive for about 2-years and it worked flawless with my former Sony DSC-F828. I recently purchased the much touted Canon EOS 30D and had success with the drive, however, after maybe 100 shots the card went kaput citing an error. This is my personal experience and the card was a bit aged.

After 40,000 shots, 2 cameras, 1.5 years and many drops, this chip still performs perfectly. I've used it heavily and aggressively and have had a great experience at a great price. Its almost as fast in write speeds but slower in read speeds during computer upload. There are some myths about the chip that its slow and fragile, which I'll explain below is just totally wrong.

Speed:

On my old Canon 20D, I got its full claimed buffer in RAW and JPEG. On my newer Canon 5D (12.8 megapixel), I get 17 instead of the 19 claimed RAW pictures during continuous shooting, and I pretty much can't run out the JPEG (well over 50). I've used the Sandisk II, and after some testing, I found that the write speed was almost the same, but the read speed is about 1/3 slower when loading onto the computer. Not a big deal, since the write speed is a bigger priority while shooting. Yesterday, I loaded the whole 4gb chip into Apple Aperture in 14 minutes.

Space:

On the 20D or 30D, you'll get almost 500 in RAW, but on my 5D, I get under 280, so I'm now shopping around for a 8gb chip. You might try the 6gb rather than the 4gb since its getting cheaper.

The "Fragile" Myth:

People always say that the microdrive is more "fragile" than the compact flash, which I can say with absolute certainty is B.S. Most people who criticize the microdrive have never used it or known anyone who used it - last time I checked, judging without knowing is called ignorance, no offense.

Anyway, I shoot my college football team, for the college newspaper, and frequently I do landscape and wildlife photography, so I'm frequently taking the chip in and out of my camera and dropping it on occasion. I've have used the camera at 20 degrees, in the hot and humid Florida sun, and have had a light sunshower, but yet the chip keeps going after 1.5 years.

Also:

All microdrives are made by Hitachi, even from Sony. Hitachi bought the division from IBM a few years back, and Hitachi will sell under other names for more market share. Don't waste your money on stupid brand image, just buy the one you find cheaper, which is probably the Hitachi.

Many people say, this chip doesn't work with this camera, especially on older reviews. If the firmware on your camera is old, it may not support any large chip, so update your camera first.

I own a Capture 4.1. I wanted to install on my Dell Precision 690. I was able to install it, together with an upgrade on the install disk, but when I tried to run it, I got a BSOD saying "an attempt was made to execute a non executable memory". It is the only program which does not run on my computer, and the only one which gave me a BSOD in the last 5 years. Unfortunately I cannot give 0 or less stars for such a buggy program.

I didn't like the original suggested retail price and put this off purchasing more essential accessories for my Nikon 8400. Wa-La! The price drops 50% or more, cheap-o bucks and I did it. Actually, its only a battery pack, but when that special Litho battery dieds or no replacements are around, slap in a set of the ever common AA's or AA rechargeable batteries and I'm back in business. I also like the additional shutter release for vertical photos and the extra heft in weight it gives the camera. The battery access cover needs to be twisted off (very easy) to allow the CP10 to slip into the 8400, but they have a storage spot for the cover so it never can be lost or left somewhere. All said in done, I'm glad I have mine. Again, especially at these prices.

Great concept, but..........2006-01-19

I am a new owner of a Nikon 8400 camera (a great item, by the way). I like the MB-CP10 Battery Pack for taking vertical photos. It adds body and convenience to the camera. However, I was disappointed to find out that it is not a supplemental battery. The user must either use the camera battery OR the CP-10. So, if you are using this item for taking vertical pictures...understand that you will only be using the "AA" batteries, which burn up pretty fast.

Battery pack, but frankly it's a bit too pricey. And appears it would clumbersome to use. Especially in the horizontal position as the viewfinder is in lower postion. Anyway, the whole idea is to have more power available vs the battery pack which comes with the camera.

Just make sure you buy NiMH 2300-2000 AA batteries.

Great concept, but a bit too expensive, Nikon needs to price it more like in the $75 dollar price range, but consider extra battery packs cost only $42, well. You can see my point of view.

You can buy alot of battery packs for $170 bucks.

If you get one of these, make sure you post a review and what type of photography you do.

This can be used in lieu of a replacement battery. Plus if an electrical outlet is convienent, like when shooting inside, you never have to worry about running out of power. Also handy if you are mobile and have a auto dc/ac converter. But not as overall convienent as an extra battery. I thought it would also trickle recharge the battery, but it doesn't. Nikon should add this feature in.

It's an AC adapter. One end plugs into the wall, the other end plugs into the camera. It's pretty hard to screw up.
