Almost Perfect Every-time.......2006-01-08

I have had my PX 708A since Dec 2003 and it has always performed as expected with a burn speed of about 7.80X as an average for a DVD + R. I have had only a couple of coaster while writing to a CD-R at 48X. I don't know much about all the other burners but I can say this, if I call Plex Support as to how to do something, I always get a knowledgeable technical support person that speaks REAL English, and they know what you are are talking about! I don't think you can get this level of service anywhere else like the commodity supplier to include Sony, Dell, LG, HP or even Panasonic, maybe Canon but hay they don't make burners yet. People that know, know Plextor, it is usually the one setting the standard and it it is almost always the the best Optical drive you can buy,however you may have specific needs and have no need for the quality or features that Plextor offers. This unit is now dated so it should go for about fifty to seventy five bucks, buy new if you can.

PX-708A Stopped reading / writing DVDs .......2005-12-09

I owned the PX-708A for less than 2 years. It recorded DVDs with unpredictable results. After spending hours working on a DVD production and burning it with the PX-708A,it would fail during playback. Wasted many high quality DVDs. Recently wrote to Plextor to try to get my PX-708A repaired for a price, since it was out of warranty. They replied that they no longer fix opitical drives. I replied back to them how disapponted I was, since at the time I paid $218.00 for this drive. The responded, "it's out of warranty, there's nothing we can do."
Look elsewhere for someone who stands behind their product after the warranty runs out. It sure isn't Plextor.

Excellent Burner.......2004-03-26

I got this burner for christmas and its been flawless. I got a 25 pack of 4x Memorex DVD+Rs and I haven't made a coaster yet. It burns the memorex 4x at 8x speeds! Takes me around 4-8 minutes to burn a disk. Plus plextor has a very good reputation and are always updating firmware to keep up to date with the lastest DVD media.

Performs well, good support, one glitch.......2003-12-11

I discovered that the drive worked fine with DVDs but not CDs. Plextor support was excellent (returning e-mails on weekend evenings, even).

It turned out to be a known hardware defect. One annoying downside is that return shipping for warrantee support is paid for by the customer, even though the fault was with Plextor (not that this kind of return policy is unusual).

Great burner.......2003-10-09

It's fast!. With 4x media like TDK you can burn at 8x (DVD+R only). I like the option of having multiple formats, and with Plextor quality, that's even better!

Very Disappointed.......2006-02-01

I purchased Plextor for what I thought was a quality product. However, now after about 18 months of not very heavy use it has failed (I can no longer burn a DVD). So, while it worked better than a previous SONY DVD writer (it never burned a single DVD) the Plextor has not lived up to my expectations. So I cannot recommend it.

Product Support - Lack of.......2005-02-09

Quality appearance of unit is excellent. However, Plextor RMA product support is severly lacking.
I own the PX-708A, among three other Plextor drives. The unit failed in less than one year. One year is the warranty period. Plextor RMA department has refused to service the unit under warranty. In addition, they state that they no longer repair their products. Their suggestion was for me to go out and buy another newer drive. Bad, bad advertisement!!

ALWAYS works even with low cost media.......2005-02-07

It works. It always works. It burns on ANY media. It can overcome "imperfections" in LOW LOW cost media and return a readable disc. I've never bothered with the bundled software, but I'm certainly NOT EVER going to install anything from Roxio.

Most burner review sites compare drive X to a plextor as they define the standard for high quality.

Why buy anything else?

Slow but Quality Burning.......2004-11-03

I have been nothing but satisfied with my PX-708A. It's error protection technology seems to function flawlessly, but it does slow down the burning process when enabled. If speed is what you are looking for, then look elsewhere. But if a quality, error-free burn is more important to you than speed, then this burner should please you. I have used Mitsui, Sony, and Iomega discs with this burner with no problems at all.

Seriously disappointed.......2004-09-08

I've been a big Plextor fan for years and in this case I spent extra money for the same specs, just for the Plextor name. It has always meant quality in my book. This drive installs and runs fine under win2k, but it does NOT burn at 8x. Every time I try to use 8x burning it makes a coaster.

I have used 2 versions of dvdXcopy, DVD-Cloner, Roxio and Nero 6, so I can't buy the "it's the software's fault" garbage. The media is 8x Memorex +R. When I knock it down to 4x it works fine, although I just finished making a coaster at 4x due to a buffer underrun, something that this drive is supposed to be immune to. Also, I get the same problem when trying to burn CDs at 40x, which IMO is not really a wondrous feat nowadays. I have to knock it down to 32x.

So basically it works, but for the extra money I paid (200 in Jan '04 - 60-80 clams more than the competition) I expected to get the advertised features. I'm sure someone else will come along and say that their's works fine, hence I'm clueless, but this is my experience. I burn a lot of DVDs too. My ride is an AMD 2200+ with 512 DDR400.
