Does anyone know why the OS won't back up to the MMC card? Why does it have to be loaded every time the battery runs out? I'm trying here because customer service is non-existent.

The price is right for what it does and it does what it does well.I am very satisfied with this ebookman. The only possible improvement I can concieve would be to enable it to accept higher-capacity memory.But.then it wouldnt be quite what it is,so what the heck? lol All in all,I am very satisfied with the unit and the service. well done (...)!!!

Franklin EBM-911.......2007-05-07

It is a nice device, but you get more from an iPAQ or a Palm plus you get the added benifit of starting with a lot more memory and being able to increase your memory using SD cards. The Franklin is supposed to use MMC cards to increase the memory, but I was unable to access books loaded on the MMC card to read on my Bookman without using the computer to transfer files. Not very convenient when you are on a plane or a train in Asia and want to read a book on the card.
On the iPAQ or Palm you can download files onto the SD card and open them using the device while on the go, no need to transfer files using the computer.
I do like the size of the screen, much better than the iPaq or Palm, but it does not make up for the lack of sufficient memory.
I also dislike that you cannot download Adobe reader or the Microsoft reader to read books in those formats.
While I do enjoy the books available in the Mobipocket format, I have books in the other formats and I cannot use them on the Bookman.
I wish they would improve the product and release it again. I did not realize it was discontinued when I purchased it, my fault for not investigating more throughly.

Workable Problems.......2007-05-06

Only use mine for reading-discarded all other programming. And ABSOLUTELY great to carry in purse (w/ extra batteries).
--However, when changing batteries, must wait for at least a minute for the unit to recognize new batteries. Or pragramming wiped.
--The largest MMC is 64MB, only get from Ectaco. Specialty item.
--When the chip gets to be 50% full, might notice connection problems when the MMC is in the unit. 10 minute wait turns to 30 min., then to an hour, or never, all the time eating up battery power. Guide book says to load anything on MMC, must be in unit (found a way around that).
All it needs is A/C adaptor & much bigger MMC.
