If you're a Qucksilver Mac User, this is as good as it gets........2007-01-13

I use a Quicksilver (2002) Dual 1Ghz G4 Mac. this specific edition of the 9800 (which DOES have 256mb of vram) is the highest level video card you will be able to get for a Quicksilver mac. I used to be using a GeForce 4mx along with an old original Radeon PCI card. Now I use both heads on the same 9800 card (I could add a third on the old radeon if I wanted to). It works swimmingly! I've played all the way through Lego Star Wars (which says my pre-9800 configuration is at the bottom of the rung, but would not run on the GeForce). I only notice slowdown if I turn on the shadows effect. This slowdown has to do with the processor or AGP bus speed, and not the video card.
This is the best thing I ever did for my trusty lil' box. I do notice a bit of improvement in Lightwave 6.5, an improvement I'm sure is much more noticeable were I running a newer version of lightwave.
Also, while Apple's specs don't mention the 9800 in their list of supported Quartz Extreme video cards, Apple System Profiler lists it as SUPPORTED! That's right, you get the liquidy ripples when you launch a new Dashboard widget! I wasn't expecting it, but I was ecstatic to see it.
none the less, if you've got a quicksilver and are looking to max it out, this is the card to get. The 9200 will not run on this model, as they eventually found out. so. This is it. But don't worry, it's worth it.

Best for a G4 PowerMac.......2007-01-03

After hosing an NVidia GeForce 4600 Titanium 128MB graphics card and my 20" Apple cinemascope LCD monitor by trying a demo of Quake 4 without checking the specs more carefully (yes, it was truly a bonehead move), I looked around for the best possible replacement graphics card for my PowerMac G4 FW800 DP-1.425 Ghz. One that would safely run Quake 4. All reviews and even Apple's own "geniuses" at the store recommended the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition. I paired it with a new 23" Apple HD display now selling at 1/2 the price it used to sell for. The results are sharp and the demos which showcase the graphics features are quite impressive for this now aging system now almost 4 years old.

Great Buy.......2006-11-22

Great Buy!! I just upgraded my video card on my G4 PowerPC Mac from an older ATI 128 Rage Pro Card. This is a great great card, the picture is unbelievably sharp best that I have seen. It was very easy to install, took seconds, didn't need to use the manual. I give it more than 5 stars, I give it a 10!!

Upgrade for Video Editing.......2006-11-04

Purchase the card as an upgrade to the standard Mac G5 video card, as I was becoming more heavily involved in video editing. Easy to install and works perfectly.

A Great Buy........2006-08-24

I was looking to purchase a replacement for the ATI Radeon 9700 that my Apple G4 came equipped with. I had tried going with a safe and cheaper route with the 9200, that I still believed would function properly, but this was an obviously inferior card that was highly noticeable on crashes and freezes with motion graphic programs and applications with timelines such as Flash, After Effects and even iMovie.

After speaking to some techs at ATI, they recommended the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition, which aside from an extra power cable to connect inside the machine, was pretty much the same as my previous 9700 if not better. Placing the card in was easy and results were instant.

Definitely a worthwhile card that will not let you down with motion graphic intensive programs. A great buy.

Powerful but at a cost.......2005-08-13

I upgraded my G5 workstation to this card for better gaming and Motion graphics performance, and it does deliver the on screen portion very well. Everything is super-smooth and beautiful quality.

HOWEVER, the heat from the card -- even with its own fan, makes my G5 fans run about 2x the RPM they used to. Consequently my machine is now more noisy, very noisy when playing high performance games. Worse still this thing will heat up a small, closed in office very quickly. You can literally feel the temp rise in the room after a few minutes of heavy use.

Last, the instructions that came with the card are wrong as far as power supply connectivity. I think they packaged old instructions with a new card but who knows.

So, if you're in a noisy office with good ventilation, you'll love this card. Otherwise think twice about the environmental consequences before you plunk the money down.
