Amazon.com Product Description

You can't always be a purist. When it's "fish or cut bait," you want the fish, and Humminbird's SmartCast RF10 mobile station is just the device to help you reel 'em on in. You get all the benefits of a traditional fishfinder, plus the freedom and mobility to fish wherever you want. Just hook the supplied remote sonar sensor to your line, cast it out, reel it in, and watch the handy 3.1 x 2.5-inch display to identify your target fish. The sensor gives you a view of the fish, the bottom, and the underwater structure right where your line is, in real time. The unit not only helps you find fish--it also contributes to your boating safety.

The remote sonar sensor uses an internal sonar transducer to collect and wirelessly transmit data to the display. Whether you're casting from the bank, a dock, a kayak, a canoe, or a float tube, SmartCast is ready to perform. Its impressive, 100-foot radius extends down as well as around, giving you an ultra-wide coverage equal to twice your depth (down to 100 feet of water, of course). A one-touch menu navigation controls fish ID, depth range, fish alarm, and sensitivity. The 8 AA battery-powered display itself is lightweight, compact, and totally waterproof and even offers a backlight for night fishing.

Wet Switch technology maximizes battery life by shutting down the display whenever the remote sonar sensor is out of water. The user-replaceable remote sonar sensor gives you around 400 hours of in-water use. An A/B channel option lets you use two remote sonar sensors in the same area at the same time for greater coverage (additional purchase required, sensor model number RF40). The base unit, which supports the display, comes outfitted with an anti-skid rubber bottom. It also converts to a handy carrying case--the unit folds in for protected transport and storage.

What's in the Box
Remote sonar sensor, base unit with display, and a user's manual.

Note: The RF10 is not intended for ice fishing or use in below-freezing temperatures.

5 out of 5 stars Even an idiot can use the SmartCast!.......2004-11-19

I really enjoy my Smartcast. I use rechargeable batteries and always keep extras in the trunk. I get about 25 to 40 hours of run time, the lesser if kept on all day or when using at night.

I've used this deal about twice a month for the past two years. So when the original sonar unit goes out, and it will, no way will I buy a replacement. I'll just crack it open with an electric exacto-knife, change the batteries, and seal it back up with my plastic welding kit. Anyway, why toss a perfectly good unit if it can be renewed.

I've used this thing often at the Oregon dam, that's in Illinois on the Rock River, often after dusk. Man, some nights this thing is lit big time with flatheads and walleye.

The biggest flat I've found using this thing was about 25 pounds, and the biggest walleye was about 9 pounds - both released.

I used it last May on the Wisconsin River in the Dells, and it was very handy for honing in on migrating schools of stripped and white bass.

And at night in the Dells? Well, if you can't catch a fish at night in the Dells, then there's something wrong with you.

In Dubuque on the 'Sippi this summer, I was using it around pilings and stuff. I plotted a lot of bar structure and the like, too. All of which was ultimately usefull in getting good numbers of smallmouth, striper, sauger, and walleye.

The base section has a number of good features, and seems rather technologically efficient. And I toss the sonar about on a big surf casting rig with 20 lb. test Fireline - no problem. There are some limitations of ghosting or incomplete readings at times, but it's all mostly minor or transient stuff.

In use, I generally get some depth and structure readings to figure out a section to work. Then I'll turn on the 'fish alarm' and idle the sonar in some slack water. Then as I'm working that other section and the alarm goes off, I'll quickly toss in a kamikaze leech, "Bonsai!", no wait that's, "Banzai!", right on top of that slack water fish. I always keep a rig set aside for just such a tactic as it so often yields success.

So, if you shore fish and want to detect movement, structure, and depth - get this deal and keep a log book of your activity. I've located and mapped out many new 'sweet spots' using my SmartCast, and now it often never makes it out of the box - because it's already done its job.
