Maxtor External HDD.......2006-11-20

Well, it was good while it lasted. But yesterday morning only after three years, I woke up by the sound of heads crashing and found the drive to be very hot and dead. I wounder if this had happened in my absence, could it have caught fire. The drive was very hot to the touch. I have sufficient redundancies built in so as not to suffer any data loss. But three years is a very short life span.

Three years, zero problems.......2006-10-31

I bought two of those drives in the beginning of 2004 for a purpose of making backups of our small FreeBSD 4.x server, using Amanda backup software. The drives are rotated weekly - each week one drive is on-site and another off-site. I'm using FireWire connection. I've never had any problems making backups or retrieving files from backups. Wish you the same luck!

User for 3 years and now it FAILS.......2006-08-31

I've had this HDD with few to no problems for the last 3 years. The few problems were that I occassionally had trouble accessing the drive because the power cable was not "fully" in the socket. This means I had to "wiggle" the connector to make it work.

This week, after 3 years, the drive decides not to work at all. It isn't being read by my machine even though the activity light goes off seemingly to say the HDD is doing something.

Luckily I have all my data on a newer, larger, NONE Maxtor HDD so I'm safe for now.

I've run into the "wiggle" issue with this newer HDD as well. I'm personally moving away from the HDD's with an external power source. At least the external drives that take power from a connection other than USB.

Defective Drive Crashed -- All Data Lost.......2004-12-03

The drive crashed and was unrepairable three weeks after the warranty expired. I LOST ALL DATA. Maxtor would not replace it because it was out of warranty, even though it was only three weeks out of warranty.

Two strikes and you're out.......2004-11-20

After several months of use, my Maxtor 5000DV 160GB lost its FAT formatting and became inaccessible, so I called Maxtor customer support. They told me I should have initially formatted the drive as NTFS (even though the instructions that came with my drive said nothing about this) and suggested I use a very expensive data recovery service to salvage the corrupted drive. Needless to say, I was very disappointed in Maxtor's response. I hung up, did a quick web search, and found lots of good, inexpensive data recovery software. After transferring my recovered files to a different drive, I exchanged the Maxtor 5000DV 160GB for a new one (they wouldn't give me my money back, so I thought I'd at least try a new drive). Well, what do you know? The new one, running on WinXP, and formatted as NTFS failed in exactly the same manner!

Very poor quality product.
