Product Description

EX lens series denotes excellence of engineering and new technology. Compact and lightweight zoom despite large F2.8 aperture. Excellent correction for various types of aberration provided by one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and two aspherical lenses. Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces flare and ghosting from which digital cameras tend to suffer. F2.8 large aperture standard zoom lens designed specially for use with digital SLR cameras. The characteristics of digital SLR cameras were taken into consideration when designing the lens power layout. The new advanced lens design corrects various aberrations. This lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance whilst cutting down flare and ghost caused by reflections from the digital image sensor and lens. It has excellent correction for vignetting and superior peripheral brightness is ensured. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The design produces a compact and lightweight, yet robust, construction with an overall length of 84.1mm (3.3in.) and maximum diameter of 74.1mm (2.9in.) and weight of 445g (15.6oz). This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 28cm (11in.). It is equipped with inner focusing system. The non-rotating front lens element makes the lens suitable for using its petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters. It is an ideal large aperture standard zoom lens for digital SLR cameras featuring APS-C size image sensor. *The appearance and specifications of the product are subject to change for improvement without notice.

5 out of 5 stars First Non-Canon Lens I own.......2007-06-25

This is my first non canon lens and im complety surprised... The lens is really sharp from begining to end, its really well built (its a diamond compared to the 18-55 kit lens of any canon), i think is even better builded that my 28-135 IS. Im loving this lens, the only drawback is the macro, dont buy this lens for macro work, the macro function is just a "bonus" that can save you in particular situations... this lens has become the lens that stays in the camera 90% of the time.

4 out of 5 stars So far, so good.......2007-05-12

I bought this lens from Adorama through Amazon about a month ago, and have been using it for 5-20 assignments per week. I shoot for a 25,000-circulation newspaper in the midwest, and typically use either this lense or a canon 70-200 2.8L on a 20D that I've owned for about a year.

The glass is nice, with no apparent abberations. The zoom action is smooth, if mildly stiff. The autofocus is dependable in most lighting situations. The hood that comes with the lens is adequate for blocking out most refracted light. At 18mm, there is no noticeable barrel-distortion, as is common with the Sigma 17-35mm 2.8-4 I used to use.

The primary drawback is the 1.4x conversion of the 20D. On this camera (and any other that doesn't have a full-frame sensor), 18mm is really more like 28mm. This is not the fault of the lens, BUT, if I were to use this lens on a 5D, or anything with a full-frame, I'd be getting vinetting at the corners. Such is life.

The lens is solid, and the macro function is wonderful. Canon sells a real piece-of-crap 50mm f1.8 for $60 that feels like it was made out of balsa wood (my cat recently sent it plunging to a tragic death from a table top). You're better off with this lens--it will give you a nice wide-to-mid zoom, a narrow depth-of field, and the macro will let you do the portrait work that you were probably thinking of doing with the 50/1.8.

Yes, the Canon version of this lens is assuredly nicer, at only two to three times the cost. But just like "every guitar is 90 percent player," every camera is 90 percent shooter. Unless you're using a 5D or better, the canon lens is just overkill. This was an excellent buy for me, and I'm pleased with the product.

5 out of 5 stars Great product.......2007-05-09

This is a great lens, fast focus, very sharp, lightning fast and the build quality is exelent.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific, versatile lens.......2007-04-19

At ~$600 less than the comparable Canon model, this lens is tough to beat! After several hundred shots, it's a keeper for me. I debated between this zoom range and 24-70mm, but found that 24mm was just not wide enough for my 1.6x crop Rebel XT, especially for crowded rooms and landscapes. 50mm (80mm FF equivalent) has been fine for most portraits and that zoom combined with large aperature produces nice bokeh. F2.8 makes it terrific for existing light use, though I do still find my 430EX flash necessary sometimes. I find the lens to have good sharpness at f2.8 throughout the zoom range, and at f4.0 and above it's very sharp. Colors are great. I have had no trouble with flare, or fringing, though I haven't pushed it hard in this respect. Sigma seems to have corrected the flare and CA issues with the first version of this lens. Though it's not a true 1:1 macro, I have found the macro function very useful and lots of fun. That said, the extremely small depth of field with f2.8 and macro has exposed my need for a good tripod! Build quality seems to be very good; zoom and focus are well damped. Autofocus seems accurate to me while being fast and quiet. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A versatile lens for a great price.......2007-04-18

Just another vote of confidence for this lens. (I posted this same review at another online retailer, but since I bought it from Amazon, I decided to post it here, too.)

After learning to love prime lenses, it was time to replace the underwhelming kit lens of my Rebel XT with better quality glass. I looked long and hard for a fast zoom that covered the wide-to-medium range despite the XT's crop factor, and finally settled on the Sigma.

Although I haven't laid my hands on the competition (including a similar 17-55mm f2.8 EF-S from Canon for more than *twice* as much, and the slower 17-40mm f4L), I don't regret my purchase at all. I was a bit wary at first about buying a non-Canon lens, especially after reading a few complaints online about bad samples, but the lens turned out to be just fine.

Edge-to-edge sharpness looks great to me, even wide open, and vignetting doesn't seem to be a problem. I'm not a professional, and don't own any L-series glass, but this is far more than I expected for the price.

The macro ability is also a nice bonus, as is the lens hood and case included in the package. I wouldn't call the lens "lightweight" (since I still prefer small primes when I don't need the versatility), but it's still a reasonable fit on the diminutive XT body.

I'm not crazy about the slight sparkle in the powder coat, but hey, that's hardly a complaint. All in all, I couldn't be happier!

5 out of 5 stars Great Lens. Highly recommend........2007-05-18

Just received this gem and am very happy that I went with it. I have a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and love it. So, I thought I would try Sigma again. Needed a sharp low light zoom with a semi wide angle for weddings, and presto, this lens fits the bill. I can also take macro shots, which greatly improves the score on this lens. The shots so far have been very sharp with amazing contrast. Only ding for sigma lenses is the stupid lens cap, that does not have the inner grips, so if you use a hood, you have to take it off to remove the lens cap. Simple fix sigma, get with the program. Also, a comparable lens for Nikon is the 17-55 f2.8 which I do not own since it is about $1200 vs the 400 I paid for this, so I have to assume I got a better deal for my needs.

5 out of 5 stars Great upgrade from the kit lens.......2007-05-13

Sharp and solid feeling. Perfect for moderate light when you don't want a flash. Macro capability a +. F2.8 across the range so you can leave manual settings and zoom in and out.

5 out of 5 stars Oldtimer.......2007-02-12

I bought this lens from 47th street Photo, it was delivered when they said it would be, and I consider it one of the best in my collection. It beats the Nikkor 18-70 kit lens that came with my D-70 in both resolution and contrast. On my Fuji S-3 in raw mode it has sent my Nikkor 50 1.4 and 24 2.8 to the storage shelf. Aside from its solid construction and smooth functioning controls it has the kind of contrast I remember from my days with Leica and Contax cameras. It is now my standard lens.

4 out of 5 stars Not my favorite Sigma lens.......2007-02-12

This lens SHOULD be just fabulous. 2.8 aperture throughout range. But over and over, my photos disappoint. It's unfortunate, because Sigma's 2.8 50-150 is just a glorious lens, a true alternative to my glorious but unweildy Nikkor 70-200. And, of course, their 30 mm 1.4 is an incredible prime lens.

To maintain high optical performance from infinity to close-up 1: 1 (life-size) macro photos without accessories, the new Sigma 50mm f2.8 EX incorporates a "floating" element focusing system. Designed as a quick-focusing macro lens the AF speed of 50mm, f2.8 EX Macro is 1.4 times faster than previous 50mm f2.8 macros. It features a non-rotating front lens group, which makes it easier to work with polarizing filters and has a focus limiter. Sharp pictures.

4 out of 5 stars Great lens.......2007-01-27

I currently own this lens and the Canon 50mm f/1.8. The 1.8 is clearly better in lower light conditions, but if I had to pick a good all-around indoor lens this would be it. The 18mm range is great for when a prime lens is too close, and the 50mm max length is also very sharp. I'm also satisfied with the build quality.

5 out of 5 stars Product description QUITE WRONG, and lens has been REPLACED with a better one - don't buy it!.......2007-01-12

This is a terrific lens, but Sigma has now re-released it as an 18-50mm F/2.8 EX DC Lens with MACRO capability (can focus down to 8", and 1:3 magnification), for very little additional cost, making this version of the lens essentially obsolete.

Furthermore, the other reviewer is correct that Cameta's (or Amazon's) description is quite misleading. This is NOT the Macro version of this lens. It will NOT give you 1:1 magnification (nor will the Macro version, for that matter, so I'm at a loss as to how such an unrealistic claim found its way into the ad copy!)

To locate the NEW, improved version of this lens, search on:

Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 MACRO CANON (one is also made for Nikons)

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good lens.......2006-09-19

I bought this lens with my Canon Rebel XTi. The default lens that came with the camera was very bad (EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6). I don't recommend it to anyone, it is really a waste of the camera's capabilities, and the pictures you get may not be as good as that from a point and shoot camera.

I am very happy with the Sigma lens. I love the f2.8 feature as it makes indoor pictures (w/o flash) much better. The pictures are pretty sharp in general (especially around the focus point). Beware that taking pictures at f2.8 can be tricky, i.e. while the image center is in focus, the edges and other more distant points may be not be (try increasing the f number if there is sufficient light).

There are three lenses in the market with comparable price & performance: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC, Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 Di II LD and Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. Sigma is the cheapest and the other two are a bit more expensive.

I've just compared my Sigma with a friend's Canon today. The picture qualities were almost identical. Canon was a bit sharper due to Image Stabilization, but f2.8 in Sigma compansates for that. Overall, the picture qualities were very very similar. Canon has a slightly wider range of zoom, but I don't know if it worthy of $150 price delta. The barrel distortion at 18mm is noticeable with both cameras.

The reviews I read online indicate that Tamron and Sigma lenses are pretty similar, although the reviews for Tamron are a bit better. I haven't tested the Tamron yet.

I haven't had any focusing issues with the Sigma. It takes a while to get used to auto-focus function in Rebel cameras and perfect focusing is not 100% guaranteed. But that's true for any lens. You just need to learn how to do it.

I am aware of only one lens which is considerably better than the Sigma: Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. That lens really rocks. Its colors are more saturated and it is sharper due to IS. However, it is _very_ expensive. If you cannot afford it, one of the three lenses above can be your choice. Sigma offers the best value among three, and it has pretty good performance.

4 out of 5 stars Great lens with minor problems.......2006-01-02

I am very happy with my purchase of this lens. I bought it to replace my Rebel XT's 18-55mm kit lens, and it compliments the camera very well. The greatest strength of this lens is its remarkable sharpness. Even 100% crops retain their quality. Shots are even acceptable at f2.8 (better than or equal to the kit lens at f8+), and past f8 the lens is stunningly sharp. I uploaded some shots and 100% crops to amazon in order to illustrate my point. The sharpness of this lens is easily comparable to Canon's 17-40, which says quite a lot.

The corners are not as sharp as the center, especially in wide angles. Outside of the center, the 18-50 is also prone to chromatic abberations/fringing but not worse than almost any other lense. Barrel distortion is present at 18mm but much better than the competition (ie, the 17-40L and 17-85 IS).

Color saturation is good- not as impressive as the Canon 17-40 but still perfectly adequate and very good with a slight software sharpening boost.

The only true negative I have found is a propensity for light lens flare. Even when the sun is out of frame by 20 degrees, flare can still occur. (note that this flaring is not major, and I have often not even noticed it until the second or third time I come back to a picture) I have also noticed flare from street lamps in 10+ second night shots. The lens comes with a decent hood (as well as a pretty nice soft case) in order to help prevent flares. However, I have noticed flaring in cases where the sun was so indirect I never would have thought to attach the hood. The lens cap also cannot be accessed while the hood is on, which is a frustrating design quirk. While, even in the best lenses, flare is not totally avoidable the 18-50 flares much more frequently than other lenses I have used. I don't know if this is an issue with the internal optics or the coatings used on the lens.

Even considering flare problems, I would buy this lens again without a second thought. Its only direct competitor in quality is the Canon 17-40L, which is more expensive, shorter in range, has a narrower max aperture and worse barrel distortion. I am extremely happy with almost every shot this lens generates, and its moderate price makes the 18-50 f2.8 a great companion for the Rebel XT.

5 out of 5 stars fast lens.......2007-05-23

Product performed as expected. Excellent low light performance and very fast lens. At extreme wide angle (18mm) you may need to rotate lens petal shape lens cover to keep shadow out or just take lens cover off. Built solid (great build quality) with metal mount and excellent finish. The lens is sharpe throughout the zoom range. The EX version is impressive with a good solid feel to the lens. This lens is on my camera 80% of the time. Vendor shipped product in safe and expedited manner. I will do business with them again.

5 out of 5 stars General purpose and low light option.......2006-11-26

I recently made the jump into my first DSLR, a Pentax K100D. However, like most "kit" lenses, the provided 18-55 seemed to be average at best (based on reviews, etc), so I opted to get the body only, then pick and choose some lenses.

I went with a Pentax 10-17mm fisheye-superwide zoom, and a Sigma 70-300 telephoto zoom. I like the extreme perspectives those lenses can provide.
However, for the bread-and-butter mid-range lens, I decided to pay a bit more (OK, three times the price of the kit lens, and more than either other lens) for the extra f-stops and reputed sharpness of this lens.

The lens is a little larger and heavier than similar-range slower lenses due to the extra glass. It has a zoom-lock at 18mm which prevents the zoom from creeping out if you are the type to let your camera hang on the strap - I'm not. I support the camera under the lens in my left hand.

As with my other Sigma lens, they recommend putting it in manual-focus mode when adding or removing the nice included lens hood to prevent damage to the focusing system. Perhaps that's a good habit to get into, though remember to slide it back into AF (if that's your style) or you'll be fumbling to focus your first shot :-)

For some reason, Sigma is not consistent with their zoom rotation direction - it's counterclockwise wide-to-zoom on the 18-50, but clockwise on the 70-300.

So far, I'm happy with the results. Shop around as you might save $100. As they say, a picture is worth a thousands words, so I'm posting some photos in the Amazon collection.

5 out of 5 stars Best 18-50 F/2.8 lens for your money.......2007-06-09

I bought the Pentax Mount for my Pentax K10D for indoor use, it is bright, sharp and quick focus, nicely built, it feels solid in your hand, not so heavy, it produce nice bokeh shots. BTW, the Macro is a bonus for this lens. Sigma's technology improves a lot into this F/2.8 Macro lens, for the build quality & Price. I would vote for this lens as "The lens of year 2007". Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A very good lens indeed.......2007-04-02

I bought this lens because my REAL Nikon film lenses did not perform well with my new digital SLR. To make the whole story short, I had invested $1400 in a digital SLR in hopes that I could use my Nikon lenses. But to my surprise...those lenses didn't perform well at all. So I took a chance on this Sigma lens (after reading the reviews of course). It was the least expensive lens in my bag but it gave the best result. The images were very sharp with good colors and detail. Again, thanks to those who took the time to write the earlier reviews. They had helped me tremendously.

5 out of 5 stars Very good, yes, but DON'T BUY IT! now replaced by another Sigma with MACRO!.......2007-01-12

This is indeed a very good lens with strong reviews. It provides an affordable alternative to the unaffordable over-one-grand Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8.

Why would you want to get an f/2.8 constant aperture lens like this when you could get a "superzoom" lense that goes from 18-200mm?

Because a constant minimum aperture 2.8 lens like this one allows you to shoot nonblurry photos in low light conditions, AND because it allows you to create the most artistically blurred-out backgrounds in closeup photos. Zooms with variable minimum apertures higher than 2.8 cannot do either of those well. That's what you'll miss out on if you buy the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens, for exampe. VR (Vibration Reduction) can eliminate the effect of a wobbly hand on the camera, but it CAN'T help you "freeze the action" of the scene right in front of you. Only a higher ISO (noisy, grainy, poor resolution) or a wider aperture (confusingly, the low numbers like 2.8, 2.0, 1.8, 1.4 are the wider apertures) can solve the blurry action problem.

BUT DON'T BUY IT. Why not? Because this autumn (Fall '06) Sigma introduced a version of this same lens that is slightly updated, and, importantly, allows you to get closer to a flower or other object (8"!) and magnify such objects up to 1:3 resolution, which begins to approach the Macro range (people define Macro differently, of course, but for many flower lovers 1:3 magnification is sufficient).

The 1:3 magnification option adds a world of beauty to your walk-around picture-taking.

To have a wide-angle lens, a portrait lens, AND a macro lens all on one lens? Terrific. And the price for the MACRO version is only a few dollars more.

HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE: The names of the lenses are basically identical except the newer version includes the word MACRO somewhere in its title. If the product name doesn't say MACRO, it's the older lens.

4 out of 5 stars Good all around lens.......2007-01-11

This is a good lens to have in the bag for an amateur photographer like myself. The lens is relatively fast with a constant 2.8 aperture throughout the zoom. The lens is sharp at f-stops 4 and above and workes quite well even wide open. I use it on a Nikon D50. Focusing is fast. Overall I am quite happy with the purchase. Check out pictures at

5 out of 5 stars A very good lens.......2006-10-06

I took a look a this lens almost as a fluke -- I wanted something that gave me quick speed at 2.8 but had more range than than the prime standard 50/1.8...and I was so pleased with the lens I have used it quite a bit more than I thought I would. The quality of the photos is excellent, good colors, good contrast. The lens is relatively light (less than a pound) so it "feels good" on the body. Compare this lens to the Tamron 17-50/2.8 They are virtually identical. This is a supurb replacement for your standard kit lens.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Lens!.......2006-06-08

I use this lens on my Nikon D70. It's great. Before I bought it, I thought I should get a lens with better range, example, the Nikon 18-200mm lens. My friend had told me about this one, so I decided to buy it for the heckuvit. I was glad I did. The range isn't a big deal now, but the only problem is--umm--uhh--I can't really think of any problems I've had with this lens, besides the fact that I all of my lenses, I use this one the most, and I paid all that money for the other lenses! Trust me, it's great.
