The OfficeConnect external cable modem is part of 3Com's complete cable access system for integrated cable-return broadband communications in one powerful platform--and part of the OfficeConnect family of easy-to-use products for small office and home office users. The stackable design allows for the addition of hubs to connect multiple PCs, Internet firewall/VPN solutions, and new MTA devices to support Internet telephony.

DOCSIS compliance provides interoperability and peace of mind as your network grows. And because this modem is designed for tiered service levels, including Committed Information Rate, it lets you create multiple service options to expand your market and revenue opportunities.

Built-in security and protocol filtering protect the privacy of your users' data. The modem supports baseline privacy with a 56-bit security key.

Note: Be sure to check with your Internet Service provider before making a cable modem purchase. Some providers require that you use their modems, and even those that don't generally don't offer technical support for modems the company doesn't supply. Every cable modem has a unique MAC address that serves as an identifier for the ISPs, and if your MAC address doesn't match up to the one they assigned to your account, the modem simply won't work.

good product.......2003-07-18

At the beginning, I got the same time-out(20 minutes) problem, after calling AT&T many times(more than 10), they realized this is because I had not registered the cable modem with their server. After I registered it with their server, time-out issue is gone. There is a tech who visited my apartment to install the system for me. I just wonder this should be the very first step, how come it looks none of AT&T's support knows it?

Firmware Problems..........2002-11-18

3COM cable modems apparently have firmware problems that cause the connection to your cable provider to time-out, so you get a tempermental connection and have to try a bunch of resets to get it going again. My cable provider sadi that as long as it was DOCSIS compatible, it shouldn't be a problem - now I know why not a single 3COM was listed as "supported / approved" on their website (for anyone who cares - I'm with Cox Cable in Northern Virginia).

Get something else that'll actually work. Sure wish I'd known better...

Disappointed.......2002-11-09

I bought this modem in January of 2002. Since March, I have had problems with the cable connection: I had many issues where the modem was very tempremental and would work as and when it desired. Not knowing that it was the modem that was the problem, I got into a large skirmish with the cable company. To prove that their line was not faulty, they installed their surfboard modem and that worked. Since July, I have been trying to contact 3Com. Cant find a number anywhere! The few numbers that are mentioned on their website take more than 4 hours to transfer to the customer service person at which time the line disconnects. I am fed up and dont know what to do.

This was one of the easiest modems to hook up! And the speed is quite fast. No Latency prepared to d-links cable modem. Runs very cool as well.

3com office connect modem.......2002-08-28

I purchased this modem because I was looking for a cheap one for my cable ISP. I was in luck to find this one at uBid.com for about $40 shipped. The modem did have some issues but they were all cleared up after I requested a firmware upgrade on dslReports.com for Optimum OnLine. I cannot stress the face enough about finding out whether your ISP is compatible with any modem before you purchase one.
