The Linksys 10/100 4-Port VPN Router is an advanced Internet-sharing network solution for your small business needs. Like any router, it lets multiple computers in your office share an Internet connection. But the unique dual Internet ports on the 10/100 4-Port VPN Router let you connect a second Internet line as a backup to insure that you're never disconnected. Or, use both Internet ports at the same time, and let the router balance your office's requirements between them for maximum bandwidth efficiency.

The 10/100 4-Port VPN Router also features a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Ethernet switch to connect four PCs directly, or you can connect more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need.

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability creates encrypted "tunnels" through the Internet, allowing up to 30 remote office or traveling users to securely connect into your office network from off-site. Users connecting through a VPN tunnel are attached to your company's network -- with secure access to files, e-mail, and your intranet -- just as if they were in the building. You can also use the VPN capability to allow users on your small office network to securely connect out to a corporate network.

The 10/100 4-Port VPN Router can serve as a DHCP Server, and has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks. It can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet, and has IP address filtering so you can specify exactly who has access to your network. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

The worst and most expensive router i've owned so far........2007-01-21

This thing is garbage. I originally had a client buy it, but we couldn't get Quick VPN to work right back then. I got the unit in the end, and it worked for a year or so.
Then all of a sudden the diag light started flashing and the unit stopped working. I reset it and updated the firmware. That completely toasted it, and i had to reload the firmware with TFTP.
Then there were the notorious MTU problems. Ident is still not filterable in the new firmware, among other shortcomings. You have to forward the port to nowhere manually.
Finally, got it to work again for a couple of hours with the new firmware before the diag light started flashing again, and this pathetic router failed again. Now, it's going in the trash.
I read that these have a CMOS battery inside them, which can cause problems and is not user-replaceable. If that's true, it's funny how none of the other old, cheap routers i have used ever had any trouble with that. Right now, my old, cheap D-Link router had to take the place of this overpriced trash.
Marketing this model as a small-business router is nothing more than a joke...

This product is essential for business. Also if you need to communicate with your business customers aborad you just set up a closed network. It was available at a good price and was sent by Amazon right on time. I reccomend it to everyone, please purchase it here.

Linksys RV042.......2007-01-09

The perfect way to use a VPN for a small office environment. Easy to administer internally or remotely, and with the included software, I could send a cd home with a user and know that the setup on their pc would be correct.

I've been very satisfied with the RV042 - it does what it's supposed to do. I initially bought a Netgear as the primary router for a client, a golf course. The Netgear handled the load without a problem, but despite being advertised as having VPN pass-through capabilities it would not allow a Cisco router to connect through it. I replaced the Netgear with the Linksys RV042 and have had no further problems.

Worse router EVER!!!.......2007-01-04

This router is horrible. It didn't work. After many hours on the phone with very very incompetent tech "support" they gave me an RMA and sent me a new one about a month later. The new one doesn't work either. It is the slowest and most unstable "router"(if you can even call it a router) I have ever seen. It's actually slower when both wan lines are in use than if you used only one wan line. It does NOT load balance and tends to freeze up with more than one download going through it. NEVER BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!
