PRESTIGE 645M ADSL MODEM PPPOE

Product Description

Product Description:
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is the hottest technology for Broadband Internet Access as well as providing voice services simultaneously on the same copper line. ADSL line rate using DMT line coding supports up to 8M/1.5Mbps downstream which is more than 140 times faster than analog modem and 800K/512Kbups upstream for Full-Rate (T1.413 Issue2 and G.dmt) / G.lite standard. Such asymmetrical nature makes it ideal for the SOHO environment, where the downstream traffic is typically much higher than the upstream traffic. Users can now enjoy the multi-media and real time applications such as online gaming, video conferencing and other bandwidth-consuming services by subscribing to ADSL.The Prestige 645 series offers auto-sensing between full-rate and G.Lite standards according to central office switch or DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplier) so a user can easily be upgraded from a G.Lite service to a full-rate service or vice versa without the cost of new ADSL modem or router.Incorporating ZyXEL's first-in-the-world PPPoE implementation, the Prestige 645 series enables users as well as service providers to make use of the existing PPP/PAP/CHAP based authentication and accounting infrastructure. Users don't need to pay extra for PPPoE software while still enjoying the benefit of PPPoE.The Prestige 645's SMT (System Management Technical) and the optional web-based configurator make the configuration easy for users while saving time and support effort for service providers.

I've had this DSL modem for about 6 months. I got it free with Earthlink DSL service. I can't guarantee that any problems i've had are all modem-related because there's the signal itself to consider, but i do tend to lose synchronization often. It happened more before i bought a Belkin router, but it still happens occasionally. In addition, i was hacked (Win2K with no firewall) prior to buying the router so i have to strongly recommend not using this thing without a firewall of some kind. It has both a power button and a reset button, but i find only the reset cures any async issues i have. Turning it off and on only turns both the DSL and ACT lights off (both need to be on for Earthlink's service to work properly). Not much you can do as far as controls. It's a pretty passive device.

Let's face it, almost everyone getting DSL is given a free modem so it's doubtful you'll have a choice, but if you can afford to buy better i recommend one of those combination DSL modem/router/gateways instead.
