Linksys PSUS4 PrintServer for USB with 4 Port Switch

Product Description

From the Manufacturer
Share your USB printer and expand your network with one compact box!

The Linksys PrintServer for USB with 4-Port Switch is a double upgrade for your network. First, it lets you connect a USB printer directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print serving chores. Using a PrintServer frees up your "print share PC" so you don't have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work.

In addition, the PrintServer includes a 4-port 10/100 switch, so you can easily add more devices to your network. All four ports are auto speed negotiating, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you don't have to worry about the cable type. Each port independently negotiates the best speed and half- or full-duplex mode, for up to 200Mbps of bandwidth per port. Fast store-and-forward switching prevents damaged packets from being passed on into the network.

A user-friendly Setup Wizard makes installation easy, the compact case fits anywhere, and the one megabyte print buffer size handles even large graphics-intensive print jobs. Let the Linksys PrintServer for USB with 4-Port Switch bring efficiency to your printing tasks and expand your network, in one cost-effective device.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't Forget!.......2007-06-07

Setup was easy and installation a snap. Just don't forget to turn the "print offline" function off in the printer toolbar. This commonly happens during a printer install.

I'm running Windows xp on the desktop and Windows Vista on the laptop.
My printer is an HP all-in-one 1510.

3 out of 5 stars can be made to work, but not for newbies.......2007-05-31

I read all the reviews, and finally took a chance on one of these that I bought on closeout 3 months ago at a local retailer. As has been reported, the software and documentation are not much help. After talking to our IT supervisor at work, I configured it using basic networking methods, the PC's browser, and the utilities on the CD. I also downloaded fresh printer drivers for my rather old HP DeskJet 932C (which is not on the Linksys approved list, but is not an all in one machine either).

Since installing it, I have learned a couple of things: sometimes it is necessary to reset it by turning off the printer, the print server, turning on the printer, and then the print server, in that order. I learned just today that it will lock up Acrobat Reader when printing a PDF created with GPL Ghostscript (used by PDF995, and other open source PDF creators). It works fine with Adobe Acrobat created PDFs (Mac or Windows). You can determine what application produced a PDF by right clicking the file, choosing Properties, and selecting the PDF tab.

This is not exactly a plug and play device, but if you are willing to put in a little extra effort, it is handy device for your home network.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless paper weight.......2007-05-09

This product never worked and I sent it back for a refund. I'm not an expert at computers or networking, but am pretty good and can read the directions. Product never worked as advertised.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty easy.......2007-04-03

We have DSL + wired & wireless router + VOIP, and added the Linksys PSUS4 print server to the mix. Our printer is an HP PSC 1100, an inexpensive multifunction printer. The HP site and Linksys sites did not specifically name this one as compatible but we tried it anyway.
Setup was pretty easy & fast for the family computer professional and the print server performance has been reliable. Setup would have taken longer for the other family members, and not been as easy, as they would have had to read the instructions and figure out how to add the router to the existing configuration, so not quite five stars on this one.

3 out of 5 stars Good but tricky.......2007-03-08

Like a number of the other reviews mentioned, the PSUS4 works fine as a printserver but the included setup software isn't worth even removing from the box. I am by no means a networking expert but I had the time to tinker with the device and found that you really need to be ready to configure the PSUS4 directly using your browser and then configure each computer for local printing by creating a new TCP/IP port using the IP address of the unit and configuring it for printing to "USB1". If this sounds complicated it really isn't and with a bit of searching you can find quick and easy instructions from an article on the Linksys website (note the lack of mentioning USB1 in the article).

Long story short, don't buy this if you want plug and play but if you have a basic understanding of networking you will find this works fine after a bit of a painful initial setup. I found that it took much longer just to find the information I needed than actually setting up the unit.
