Linksys RV016 10/100 16-Port VPN Router

Product Description

From the Manufacturer
The Linksys 10/100 16-Port VPN Router is an advanced Internet-sharing network solution for your small business needs. Like any router, it lets multiple computers in your office share an Internet connection, but the 16 ports on this Router feature unprecedented versatility. Two are dedicated Internet ports that let you connect a second Internet line as a backup to ensure that you're never disconnected. Or, you can use both Internet ports at the same time, and let the router balance your office's requirements between them for maximum bandwidth efficiency.

Not enough? Up to five of the thirteen full-duplex switched 10/100 Ethernet ports can be reconfigured as Internet ports, for an up to seven-port failover or load balanced redundancy! Finally, a dedicated DMZ port gives you a publicly accessible channel so you can set up a web or FTP server, unimpeded by the powerful security features of the Router.

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability creates encrypted "tunnels" through the Internet, allowing up to 50 remote office or traveling users to securely connect into your office network from off-site. Users connecting through a VPN tunnel are attached to your company's network -- with secure access to files, e-mail, and your intranet -- just as if they were in the building. You can also use the VPN capability to allow users on your small office network to securely connect out to a corporate network.

The 10/100 16-Port VPN Router can serve as a DHCP Server, and has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks. It can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet, and has IP address filtering so you can specify exactly who has access to your network. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

As the heart of your small office network, the connection-redundant Linksys 10/100 16-Port VPN Router gives you the connection reliability your business needs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mixed.......2007-06-14

I have had the RV016 for a few years.

Overall I am somewhat mixed.

My biggest disappointment is with Linksys support. I had trouble configuring the dual WAN capabilities, and never got any help from Linksys. In the end I am using a single WAN (see below). I would expect much better, or at least some, support for an expensive router like this one.

Some applications got confused when I was using two WANs. I had this problem with 2 or 3 applications, so I suspect correcting it would be straightforward, but after HOURS of fiddling and calling Linksys help, I got nowhere.

The other surprise was that there is no way to be notified if one of the WANs goes down. I have dual connectivity for redundancy, but if one fails, there is no way to have the RV016 notify you.

I now keep both WANs plugged in, but only one port active. Someone needs to switch the connectivity in the event the primary WAN goes down.

On the positive side, I really like many of the advanced features:
* One-to-one NAT works well. My servers are both part of my LAN while having an outside WAN address
* I often remotely manage the RV016, including turning one and off various physical ports
* I found setting up VPNs to other gateways fairly straightforward.

Conclusion:
On balance there are enough features that work, or at least that I understand, that I am happy with the RV016. I do wish some of the other advertised features worked or were better documented.

1 out of 5 stars file sharing problematic.......2007-06-08

Was never able to reestablish file sharing while using this router. Tried various fixes. Was using XP on desktops and laptops. Was told they offer no support for file sharing. Sought advice elsewhere. None of it worked. Returned the item.

1 out of 5 stars Poor for big LANs.......2007-05-01

I was forced to get three of these. Each one was used on a hotel with people coming and going. All had firmware upgraded. During dead seasons, the product would work fine. This is when 5-10 people per day were using it. When 50 or more people were using it, EVERYONE ONE OF THEM WOULD FAIL, AND REQUIRE REBOOTING, often multiple times per day. Linksys support TOLD me that if more than 10 people were on it at a time, it would fail miserably. They all did. If you don't mind rebooting in a crowded enviroment, or only have 5-10 people who need this at a time, and simply need a redundant form of internet access, this will work fine. If your requirements are bigger, choose peplink.

1 out of 5 stars Don't install any new firmware.......2006-11-28

I made the mistake of installing the new firmware, and now I can't get any kind of internet connection from the outside. FTP, Remote Desktop, etc., all failed to connect. The new firmware blocks all incoming connecitons. I talked to the Linksys tech support several time, and couldn't revert back to factory default firmware. I had to bring in my home router, an RV082, which I hadn't updated, to replace the one in the office. If you want a router with bullet proof firewall, I had got it in the drawer.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Solid!.......2006-03-17

I've been using this router for 8 months now and have had no problems with it. Unlike other Linksys products, I've never had to reset this one a single time because it had hung. Current uptime is 146 days. The last time I rebooted it was because a new UPS was being installed.

Load balancing works fine (I use 3 internet connections from 2 ISPs). P2PTP VPN works with from Windows & Macs with the built-in VPN client.

I wish there was a way to bind certain IP addresses to a specific WAN connections. Other than that I can't complain.

I'm using Firmware version 2.0.6. There is a newer version (2.10.0) which I will be installing over the weekend which promises even more features.
