The Barricade Cable/DSL Broadband Router (SMC7004VBR) is the ideal networking solution for home and business users that are looking for a complete networking solution. This platform independent multi-function router combines a 4-port 10/100 Mbps dual speed switch, full-featured SPI firewall, and network management system into one convenient device. The Barricade supports various network protocols, such as TCP/IP and NetBeui, while also providing support for VPN connections with PPTP, L2TP, and IPSec pass-through.

The Barricade Broadband Router is the first router in its class to offer an integrated Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall. This firewall provides protection against hacker invasions, such as Denial of Service (DoS) attacks by analyzing individual data packets, as they pass through the Barricade, to ensure that only authorized packets are allowed access to the network. To control network access, parents or business owners can block certain web sites by entering either a URL address or just a keyword of the web site. In addition to these incredible features, this latest addition to the Barricade family provides hacker prevention and logging functionalities. For example, when a hacker attempts to access your network, the Barricade can alert you via email so you can take appropriate action.

The Barricade Router supports Network Address Translation (NAT) to provide connectivity simultaneous Internet access for up to 253 PC's using a single purchased IP address. To manage these connections, the Barricade has a built-in DHCP server to auto-assign IP addresses to devices on your network. To install this device, simply plug this router into your broadband connection using the integrated 10/100 Mbps RJ-45 WAN port - configure your static, dynamic, or PPPoE connection through the web-based interface - and in minutes you will be surfing the web. By using the web-based management system you can configure this router to handle IP routing and port forwarding through the Virtual Server option. For added management, this router also has a full- featured Access Control option. The integrated feature allows you to filter traffic through your network based on IP and MAC address.

This router is a champ. I have not had one second of problems with it since I hooked it up. It does exactly what I want it to do--serve as a router/firewall between my computers and the cable modem. It will even e-mail security reports to you, if you want it to. It is amazing to see how many computers are trying to break in every minute. I went with this router because I didn't really need wireless and did not want the extra security hassles that can bring.

I didn't know anything about routers, and I saw this one when searching for a way to get my son's computer hooked up along with mine to use the DSL. It works great.

This router works perfectly. Installation was seamless and since I installed it I have had no problems. I networked two computers together and had no problems with things like sharing printers or the two computers recognizing each other. The installation instructions are very complete and precise. I couldn't be happier with this router.

I had a Linksys router, a wireless router connected to three home computers, and the weirdest thing was happening: it would slow to a crawl during the evening hours. Maybe due to higher internet traffic or more attempts to access my ports. I spoke with the Linksys people and we fiddled around with the settings to no avail. Nothing wrong from my cable service provider either. When I bypassed this router and connected directly to the internet...no problem. So, I thought I'd try a different router. I got this puppy online for about $25.00 (not at Amazon). Hooked it up and right away it worked like a charm. I didn't even need to configure it to work but I did turn on the firewall protection. Now there is NO noticeable speed degradation on any of the computers in the evenings. When I check the router log there are buttloads of "unrecognized attempts blocked" messages from just that..unrecognized attempts to access my computer. I mean there are many attempts per second. Is that normal? Anyway, I feel pretty good about this router and would recommend it.

I have been a loyal SMC customer for years. I LOVE SMC gear, especially their tech free PHONE tech support, even of the accenst can be hard to understand.

On 7/20/06, I bought 3 of these SMC7004VBR. First surprise - the default logon password is not blank! I called SMC tech support who did not have a solution (reset didn't work) and forwarded me to a pay tech support company (in India) which gave me my first call free. He didn't have th answer so I played around with the logon and SMCADMIN worked.

Anyway, its a terrible business practice for a company to sell an item and 2 weeks later stop tech support.
No more SMC for me.
