Netgear RangeMax Wireless USB Adapter (WPN111)

Product Description

Product Description
NETGEAR's WPN111 RangeMax Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter, when used with the WPN824 Wireless Router, delivers up to 1000% the coverage and speed of 802.11g. New antenna technology has increased range beyond what was ever possible with previous generation Wi-Fi adapters. Keep your network private with WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). Setup is quick and easy with the Smart Wizard install assistant. With the RangeMax Wireless Network, you have the longest range of any wireless device on the market today - up to 10 times the wireless coverage of 802.11g. So you'll have a sizzling-fast, consistent connection in every room of your house and beyond. Range Matters: RangeMax adjusts to the interference and physical barriers in your home, and delivers up to 500,000 square feet of coverage - 1000% more than 802.11g. And you don't need to throw away your old wireless devices; RangeMax is 100% compatible with your existing 802.11b/g products and will boost their range and speed by up to 50%. Power Under the Hood: RangeMax is an advanced Smart MIMO (Multi-In, Multi-Out) technology that uses seven internal antennas. RangeMax constantly surveys your home environment for physical barriers and interference and adjusts the wireless signal to compensate for these performance blockers. For example, if you carry your laptop from the family room to the bedroom, RangeMax automatically senses the change and selects from over 100 possible antenna configurations to deliver you the fastest, clearest connection! Simple, Safe, Secure: NETGEAR's SmartWizard makes the set-up easy and hassle-free. SmartWizard automatically detects your ISP's network settings, then walks you through each step of the installation process. It's like having your own computer technician, right by your side. NETGEAR also ensures that every computer user in your home network is protected from intruders by using: a double firewall, WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), and WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access, Pre-Shared Key) Security.

2 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2007-06-16

I purchased 3 of these adapters for different users. Each user had constant connection problems. Since I wasn't sure at first if the problem was the adapter or the router, I replaced one of the adapters with an internal PCI wireless ethernet card. The connection problems went away for that user.

In addition to really lousy connections, the adapter overheats. It gets so hot, you can hardly touch it. This strikes me as a fire hazard.

Avoid it, if you can.

If you are running Windows XP SP 2, RESEARCH PROBLEMS BEFORE YOU BUY! This thing freezes up my system after about 5 minutes and causes me to have to reboot! This is a common problem as I sadly discovered through Google searches. Downloading the latest driver did not solve the problem. I then called technical support. They had me reinstall the latest driver (again, just like I did last night.) Well, is STILL freezes. His next piece of advice: try it on a different computer. Where am I supposed to get "another computer"? I have one, but it's a Mac!! How would that help me in solving a problem on a machine running Windows? OK, his next and final piece of advice is to run a cable to the router. If I could run a cable through my cinderblock walls (and if I had a long enough one), why on earth would I be buying a wireless adapter? When I said I would return it and get a different product, the tech support guy was practically begging me to let him research it further and then he would call me back in an hour. He would not let me hang up! This was after we were already on the phone for an hour. Uh, buddy, last I checked I was not on the Netgear payroll.

4 out of 5 stars Good USB Wireless Connector.......2007-05-20

This works very well with my Netgear Rangemax wireless router. I replaced an older D-Link Wireless Router and find I get better results by staying with the same brand for both sending and receiving signals. Of course, like all wireless devices you have to try many positions to reach over 80 feet. I will eventually switch to the newer "N" equipment once it has been available of a couple of years.

3 out of 5 stars Overheating.......2007-05-10

It's not reliable. Although it does extend for a fair range, and I've maxed out my DSL at 320 kb/s, it tends to overheat and cut the connection. I've even tried juryrigged cooling, but I suspect it's insulated inside so it's kind of in a pressure cooker.

I'm not going to buy another Netgear adapter after this. Seems like poor design.

1 out of 5 stars WORST networking product EVER!!!.......2007-05-04

...and as an IT professional, I've seen some bad ones. But this is the first one I've seen that does a better job of destroying an operating systems than most viruses.

Not only does this adapter overheat and shut down constantly (even with a room fan blowing cool air it), the worthless piece of **** has totally destroyed my XP Pro system, forcing me to reinstall Windows (oh, joy!). The drivers they have for this thing must have been coded by a mentally retarded baboon, and no matter what the instructions say, installing the program first does not magically make the drivers not destroy your OS.

It's a freaking USB adapter, and it managed to completely corrupt unrelated system services and registry keys, somehow uninstalled TCP/IP (and made sure windows no longer recognizes ANY network adapter on the machine) and made sure that even rebuilding the services and registry keys from my XP CD wouldn't fix the problems.

A USB device that destroys the computer's networking abilities... maybe they should sell it as a weapon instead of an adapter.

AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!

And, for what it's worth, their tech support is the worst I've ever encountered - as I had some Indian guy with a very thick accent who almost spoke English telling me that my operating system was booting up while I was looking at a blue screen of death. It was like talking to a brick wall.

This product has single handedly turned me off of Netgear for good. No wonder they haven't been able to get their drivers digitally signed by Microsoft. THEIR DRIVERS AREN'T EVEN WINDOWS COMPATIBLE!!!!
