Customer Reviews:
Firewire ports problematic at best.......2006-03-01
Okay, thought I would maximize my investment in a new USB 2.0 card for my iPod by getting a card with additional FireWire ports as well. Belkin is a known brand, so I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, the FireWire ports on the card have major issues. Namely, hard disks attached to the ports will NOT mount at startup, period. They WILL mount if the external disk is powered up afterwards, which is unlike any other card out there. In fact, I swapped it with a FireWire ONLY Belkin card, and it worked great. Unfortuantely, it takes up an extra PCI slot, but I'd rather give that up than have issues with a somewhat faulty card. Keep in mind, I ran through the originally ordered card AND a replacement, attached it to extra power to make sure that wasn't the problem, etc., and I am now, after two months of back and forth, awaiting the refund. So there is a fundamental flaw in its design. Belkin tech support was almost useless, asking me to run through all of the troubleshooting I had already done before I called them.
The only reason I don't give it a 1 out of 5 is that the USB ports DO work, and the FireWire ports SORTA work, if you learn the trick workaround. This card *might* be usable with an external FireWire video camera, since that would be booted after you start up the computer usually, but even then, why would you bother when you can get better cards elsewhere?
Quick easy install........2006-02-23
I bought the card to supply a front panel USB/Firewire hub, as well as gain a few extra ports on the back of the computer case. Installation was quick and easy. I had to hold my breath for more that a moment or two, though. When I powered up the PC after installing the card, it took about 30 seconds for Windows XP to report the new hardware. This is a little longer than I'm used to, but all works well (I haven't used any Firewire yet). Note that this card requires a standard 4-pin power connection (like a hard drive). So far, so good. You can spend much less and take your chances, but for me, Belkin has been reliable.
Didn't work with my iPod.......2005-05-04
Funny, the other reviewer bought it specifically for their iPod, and had no trouble. I bought this card for the same reason, but it doesn't seem to work with my iPod. WinXP beeps and recognizes that a device was hooked up, but it never fully connects and iTunes just locks up on me. Oddly, I discovered that now my USB1.1 ports seem to be working just fine to download tunes to the iPod which they didn't seem to be working before. This is all probably just my computer or my iPod or lord knows what sort of evil combination of devices. The card does appear to work fine with my other USB1.1 devices plugged through a Belkin 4 port USB2.0 hub.
Plug and Play.......2004-01-24
I just bought my iPod for the windows and needed to upgrade my PC to USB 2.0. I went looking around for a USB 2.0/Firewire card and noticed that the ones that were listed on amazon have terrible reviews. Many of the issues were with configuration and many were just terrible products. I really needed to get the card quick because my iPod was just sitting there doing nothing, so I decided to thrown caution to the wind and try it out. I blocked out severals hours of my day thinking that it would be a nasty process. However, I plugged it in and it just worked! No configuration issues or anything. I'm writting this review as I'm downloading my music to my iPod. Still don't know about long term issues with it but I'm happy with the configuration!
