Half way there..........2003-09-03
This adapter has served me fairly well over the past year. We have been using 2 of them on Windows 2000 machines in the same room with little difficulty. However, there are some quirks of which you should be aware before purchasing. First, there is no channel selection option in the software unless you are using Peer-to-Peer networking. In Peer-to-Peer, the channel option becomes available. Also, the reception quality seems heavily dependent (indoors) on which direction the adapter is pointed. This would at first seem to be a non-issue, except that the cord is quite a bit heavier than the adapter. Therefore, when placing it on a desk, you have to very careful to place it in such a way that the cord does not pull it onto the floor. My suggestion: once a good signal direction is found, tape the power cord to the back of the desk, or consider a D-Link adapter instead.
Pretty quick and easy setup.......2003-01-18
I purchased a few of those units to quickly add wireless connections to our networks from machines that friend and family bring over for us to play network games. Software was very easy to install and we got our LAN party started in no time at all. Because they were USB, we didn't even have to pop open the case. It even worked great on a notebook computer. The unit is very small and does not require external power. The units is about ¾" high, 2.5" wide and 4" long. It has a 3 foot long usb cable. Driver on the cd worked fine for our machines running 98, ME, and 2000. Those units worked great with our linksys wireless hub. I can highly recommend those Compaq iPaq Wireless USB adapters.
