3 out of 5 stars Buffalo WRB2-G54K Wireless - Expensive and Overated.......2005-10-12

Buffalo WRB2-G54K Wireless - Expensive and Overated. For $139.00 this package is not the most expensive wireless around but I feel it is overpriced for what it does and how it does it. If you try to use this unit in a Windows XP shared Internet connection setup it does not work as-is and requires a lot of fiddling to get it to work. While the documentation does tout this unit as a router, it also says that it will work in "other network applications." In my application I already had a network setup with 5 computers and had used the WinXP network setup wizards to configure all the computers to use a single dial-up connection on one of the computers. This worked very well until I tried to connect the Buffalo WRB2 wireless to the network. It didn't work and I spent several days trying to get it going. It turns out that you have to manually set the network addresses because WinXP connection sharing wants to use 192.168.0.1 for it's network connection and you have to manually configure the Buffalo to fit this scheme. My main complaints with the Buffalo Airstation are that this is not clear or explained in the documentation. Also, the default settings when you push the reset switches does not set the units to the settings shown in the manual so you have to manually enter a lot of settings to get the units configured back to where it was when you received it. (It sets the units to a factory default, NOT the "as shipped" configuration.)
Once you get it working, it performs fairly well but even with the repeater on it doesn't have as great a range (distance) as I expected. With both units I only observed maybe 20 feet more distance than with an old D-Link DWL-1000AP that I was hoping to replace. If the price were cheaper I might have given it more than a 3 rating. If your setup is such that it meets the published requirements exactly then this would be a good package. Just be aware that you may have to "fiddle" with it to get it to work. PH 051011

5 out of 5 stars Perfect wireless solution!.......2005-05-29

My need for this product stemmed from the fact that I have a DSL modem to the house and needed to share internet access in the main house and the guesthouse on my property for access for five computers. This product is WONDERFUL. It is relatively easy to configure (although I do have a background in high-tech). The main router has four 10/100mbps ethernet connections, which will support four computers plugged into it via ethernet cable. It also broadcasts a 802.11b/g wireless signal, which means you can get transmission speeds anywhere from 10mbps to 54mpbs. The repeater simply rebroadcasts the wireless signals it receives. From the guesthouse (about 50 feet from the repeater) I have an average wireless download speed of 160kb/sec. (about 7 secs. to download 1mb of info. -or- 30 seconds to download the average MP3 song). The wireless router supports up to 5 repeaters which would allow you to roam freely over a very large house and front yard and back yard. It works equally well with PC and Macintosh computers (we have both and connect both via ethernet and wireless). I cannot recommend this product enough!
