Linksys WET54G Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge

Product Description

From the Manufacturer
The versatile Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge can make any wired Ethernet-equipped device a part of your wireless network. At home, use the Bridge to connect game consoles, set-top boxes, or computers to your Wireless-G network and its shared high-speed Internet connection. In the office, convert your Ethernet-wired printer, scanner, camera, notebook or desktop into a wireless networked device.

It's completely driver-free, so it works on any platform and under any operating system! Since there are no drivers to load, setup is a snap--configure the network settings through your PC's web browser, then plug it into your device and go. And physical installation is simplified by support for Power Over Ethernet. With an optional POE Adapter, you can mount the Bridge wherever you want--power and data are both supplied through the Category 5 Ethernet cable.

You can also use the Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge as a kind of "cable-less cable" to connect remote areas together. Maybe Shipping is all the way across the warehouse from Receiving. Or maybe you want to set up a home office in your detached garage. With a Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge in the garage, and another one (or a Wireless-G Access Point) in the house, you're connected--no digging trenches, and no overhead wires.

Let the Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge from Linksys open up exciting new possibilities for your wireless network.

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere -- without wires. Outside of the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, airports -- great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

What Wireless Standard is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g
  • 802.11a/g

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars One more unhappy buyer.......2007-06-10

I read the negative reviews on this bridge, but bought it anyway, thinking that my years of experience with home networking and with Linksys products would pull me through. Wrong, wrong, WRONG! After two long hours of resetting IP addresses, rebooting my computer, resetting the wireless defaults, etc., etc., I gave up and got a return label from good ol' Amazon. Next day, impatient, I browsed the shelves at B**t B*y for something similar and picked up a "Buffalo Wireless-G MIMO Performance Ethernet Converter." Five minutes of setup was all it took to have my HP network printer/scanner up and running as a wireless unit! Linksys dropped the ball big time this one.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-05-09

Worked fine right out of the box. Having been using it and have not had any problems. I do not broadcast an SSID from my router and I use a different subnet mask. It was easy and straight-forward configuring. I have (3) ethernet bridges, locally attched PC, and a networked printer.

4 out of 5 stars WET54G Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge.......2007-05-09

Product works as specified except I had trouble retaining an IP address other than the default( IP would be accepted and then be reset to default IP when power was cycled to XBox). I am using the bridge to wirelessly connect and XBOX 360 to my home Linksys router. I am able to stream video, mp3 and jpegs to the XBOX 360. Overall product works well just use the default IP set by Linksys and you will save yourself alot of head scratching.

5 out of 5 stars Works fine with Debian GNU/Linux.......2007-03-30

This is why I bought the WET54G. Had to go to the Linksys website to get the correct directions to setup the device. Couldn't access the setup program inside the WET54G unless my ethernet card had a static IP address.
I give 5 stars because it works flawlessly like all linksys hardware that I own.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't work, period........2007-03-26

I purchased this ethernet bridge and spent about a week trying to get it to function to no avail. I tried to find solutions to get the unit to work by going to the Linksys site as well as researching solutions online, and finally found that Amazon had sent me a model with older firmware. Evidently, the newer firmware resolves many problems. I returned it to Amazon for a refund. However, since there was nothing wrong with the unit other than it having old firmware, I only received a partial refund.
Buyer Beware! Check the firmware version BEFORE you buy!

Why 2 stars? Linksys products are generally good and work well. But they must be shipping their old stock out to vendors to get rid of it.
