About a year ago, I purchased 2 cheap generic USB WiFi adapters, not expecting much. They did the job, albeit they weren't fantastic.
So when I bought the SMC2662W for quite a bit more money, I was expecting a superb product. I was quite wrong. This thing has given me nothing but headaches. On the startup of the computer, it will connect to the network (router is in a basement, adapter is on the 2nd floor, well within the range SMC preaches about), with excellent signal strength. Then a few minutes later, the connection will drop for no reason. It then begins searching for a network to connect to. However, until I unplug the adapter from the cord, and plug it back in, it won't find any networks. In fact, until I disabled some Windows services and installed some 3rd party software, the only way to reconnect to the network was to reboot the computer. I know my network is fine, and it's the adapter that's junk. Do yourself a favour, spend a little more money and get something decent.

I had the V.2 version for 1+ year connecting to a Barricade SMC7004AWBR. Easy install and works with both my Laptop (Win2K Pro) and my desk top (XP Home). Good reception if place on top of table (minimal obstruction), bad reception if placed in PC cabinet. I get 80% reception 20ft away w/ one wall in-between.

Does not work.......2003-12-31

Bought together with a router and a wireless laptop card. The USB adapter simply does not work. Software had problems with both Win2000 and XP. After downloading the latest version still no luck. Even though my PCs recognize the card, the utility that comes with it, does not find it! I guess you get what you pay for....

DISASTER.......2003-08-06

Do not ever buy a product from SMC. This adapter has been a nightmare from Day 1. I tried to use it on a laptop and it didn't work. Technical support could not help me fix the problem. (By the way, expect to wait at least 30 minutes before you get to talk to a useless person.) I'm now trying to install the driver software onto a friend's laptop. Same problem -- it doesn't work. Why is this company allowed to sell this product when apparently all it is is a plastic box with lights and antenna? And if you try going to the website, you'll get the drivers for another product. I have a product from Netgear and it works flawlessly... but I think any company would rate better.
