So how do you actually scan?

For single pages, simply follow these steps:

Pull the top edge of the scanner, rotating the scanner forward in the holder. The scanner can rest against the front edge of the holder.
Position the item face up in the lower left corner of the holder, with the top of the item facing left. Use the media placement tabs on the holder to position the item.
Return the scanner to its original position on the holder. You can see the item face up through the scanner glass.
Press the Scan button.
For books and other thick materials, simply place the scanner flat.

Get the whole picture

Good for the money.......2007-01-10

Pretty good for the money. If you are really picky about quality you should get a more professional model - this is economy grade. The versatility of this scanner is awesome since it can be taken off the base and used to scan large items. I also like that it takes up minimal desk space when stored on its base. That was the main selling point for me.

Works great!!.......2006-05-17

I'm a network administrator (among other things!!) and my boss decided to buy this scanner for my department. I do a LOT of scanning and I don't have any complaints about this scanner. We've had it for about a year without any problems. It's true it takes a while doing the first scan, because it has to "warm up the lamp", but after that it's very fast. It comes with some bundled software you can use to scan several parts of a large image and then put them together like a puzzle, but to be honest I rather use photoshop to do that job, and I get great results!!

However, I'm giving it 4 stars because I think it doesn't scan negatives as good as it should; for documents it's excellent!!

Plenty problems.......2006-04-28

I'm now on my third scanner of this type.

The first worked for ca. 1 week until it went dead in the middle of a scan. I returned it to the shop and soon recieved a new one. This lasted for a month - and the same thing happened again. Well, today I recieved my third scanner, which worked fine - for 15 minutes!! Three different scanners, same problem. The design and consept is great - but that does not help at all. If i could rate this with 0 stars I would.

Great Scanner .... But,.......2006-03-05

It is a great design,, very easy to use and takes up little desk space. BUT, scanning any photos with large black spaces (ie black backdrop) left a streaked look and the black was more of a grey. HP promptly sent me a replacement scanner. This one the steaks are gone, but the black areas are still grayish and blotchy.

If you are using it for documents... It is awesome.
It makes scanning my receipts for my expense reports a piece of cake.

But BEWARE if you want to scan photos....

Great Scanner!!.......2005-09-15

I just love this scanner. Not only does it work well for documents as well as slides and negatives, it has a very small footprint on the desk and looks so Slick!

I read the other reviews about stripes/banding on scans. I did a bunch of tests, and unless you are scanning tin-foil (duh), I could not get any banding. I have used hi-end scanners in the past, and this surpases my old tried and true scanner.
