Customer Reviews:
Best DSL/router I've ever Owned.......2007-04-16
This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review of a product on Amazon. I have had the Actiontec gt704-wg for over a year now operating on a Bellsouth connection (originally 1.5 meg, now 3meg).
In that time I have only had to reboot it once, following a BellSouth service outage about 6 month ago. It has happily weathered numerous power outages with no action needed and being dropped once by a visiting relative and it just keeps on ticking.
We regularly run two or three computer through the Wireless connection on 802.11g and have a VOIP phone that is connected directly to it. I have a 1/2 acre property and get close to full signal anywhere on it, inside the house, outside the house and in a few of the neighbors houses. If I'm working on my laptop while being driven home it connects while I'm heading down the street 100-150 feet away.
I recently hooked up a webcam to my Laptop and took my family (back in the UK) on a live walking tour of my house (inside and out) in full video conference mode.
If you're looking for a single box solution to get a DSL modem, wired and wireless router this is the best choice I have found out there.
At least there was some help.......2007-02-17
After fussing with ATT and Zoom X6, I bought this item. Suffered through the warnings at Actiontec support hotline (I even called ATT as it suggested and got even more lost due to the wrong VCI/VPI number that ATT gave) and finally got through quickly to an agent who was able to help me get connected.
THe support line help convinced me that this ugly box is here to stay.
Needs to be rebooted often..........2006-12-26
I received this unit for free from Verizon. Previous to this was using a Westell DSL modem. I never had any problems with the Westell, however I have to reboot this unit about once every 3 to 5 hours because it drops it's WAN connection. Most of the time the LAN connection stays so I can transfer files between my PC and laptop but I cannot access the internet. Usually a reboot fixes things. All in in all I say buy a linksys or another reputable brand. While not total junk, this product seems to have it's issues as evidenced by the amount of users here expiriencing the same problems as I have. Strangely enough all of these users seem to be using Verizon DSL. Hmmmm.....
Lost cause.......2006-12-18
I received this router from Verizon to upgrade my system after a lightning strike. What a mistake. The router will not stay connected to the DSL service. We have 3 computers hooked to the router. Two via wireless card and one cabled directly to the modem/router. Two with Windows XP Pro and one with Windows 98. All PCs act the same when connected to the network. After two hours of usage the power switch must be cycled on the router and the connection on the PC must be renewed. Customer support from Actiontec has been non-existent. Email replies from support offer the Actiontec salute by sending consumers to their DSL provider. After a replacement unit from Verizon performed the same way, I gave up. (Remember, these are the same people who have been awarded the hardware contract for Verizon's FIOS network. Looks like I will not upgrade to that service any time soon.)
On a positive note, I have worked the router into my exercise routine. Constant trips to the router to cycle the power switch have allowed me to spend less time on the treadmill and more time walking the halls of my home.
It works fine for me..........2006-11-01
I bought this when getting Qwest DSL. The only problem I've had (so far) was on Qwest's side, where my phone wasn't wired for DSL when they said it would be. A (free) service call by a tech. fixed that very quickly.
As far as the modem itself goes, everything works. I've tested the ethernet ports and they get approx 100mbs. I also enabled the wireless part and got a 4-bar signal on my laptop three rooms away. Wireless was about 11mbs. The documentation was a little thin on how to set it up, but the Qwest hotline walked me through it. The modem also included a short sheet for configuring wireless.
UPDATE: I had been using VPN with my dialup service. When I got DSL, VPN would no longer work. The users guide said to contact Qwest to enable VPN pass-through, but they were not helpful. They suggested contacting Actiontec, where it was suggested I contact a group that charges per call. I decided to poke around somemore, and discovered that turning the modem Firewall Security setting from "low" to "off", VPN would start working. You'd think that somebody would have known about that...
UPDATE: This modem usually works fine for weeks at a time, but once in a while it loses its internet connection. This prompts a troubleshooting wizard to pop up. In my experience the wizard doesn't usually fix anything, and sometimes makes things worse. The best thing I've found is to turn the modem off, wait 10-20 seconds, and turn it on again. This reboot usually gets the "internet" light on the modem to turn green in about 30 seconds. I think the problem is on the Qwest side of things.

Very, very good!.......2004-12-12
Perfect! Easy to install, very good. I liked and recommend. I bought in the USA and use here in the Brazil.
Wouldn't have written but..........2004-12-10
So many of the bad reviews here are by people saying "it didn't work... but when I replaced it with xyz brand DSL router, it worked first time."
If you have ADSL, then this A D S L router should work fine (though it is a bit dated now).
If you have DSL, you need a D S L router.
Netgear DG824M what wrong with you lot?.......2003-10-30
you need to know what you donig with this one and if you do it works great, if you don't know then leave it alone!!!
Didn't Work Even with Firmware Upgrade.......2003-10-01
If this product had worked the way it was supposed to work (i.e., if it had worked *at all*) it might have been a great choice. As it was, I spent several hours trying to configure it myself, then several more hours with Netgear tech support (avg. wait >30 minutes) trying various ways to troubleshoot it. I upgraded the firmware to their latest version (l.4 release 05). It still didn't work. I called tech support back and after running me through all the same procedures for another hour or so, they concluded I had a defective router. So I sent it back for an exchange, got another one, and the second one failed to work as well. I again spent multiple hours talking to tech support and was transferred to a senior technician, who ultimately concluded the second unit was defective. Incredulous, I called and talked to another senior tech, who concluded that the unit was either defective (in which case I wish I'd saved my luck for the lottery) or simply didn't work with my setup. That was the final diagnosis -- they had no explanation for *why* it didn't work, not even a theory.
So after a grand total of perhaps 6-8 hours of talking with Netgear tech support, my ISP, and my local phone company's tech support, plus a couple weeks of waiting while I exchanged my first unit and waited for email responses from Netgear's senior techs, I finally returned the thing for a refund. I now have an Actiontec DSL gateway that works like a charm.
Maybe Netgear needs to come up with yet another firmware patch? In any case (as the other reviews here indicate as well) I'd hold off buying this particular product until it's clear they have worked out all the bugs.
Upgrade firmware first.......2003-09-25
I would agree that this modem does not work with the firmware that is shipped with the Netgears DG824M modem which was version 1.2, even 1.3 does not work. After upgrading the firmware to 1.4 it started to work. Note you must upgrade in sequence. 1.4 release 5 works great. I have had no problems with all the rich features within the modem after upgrading. I gave it 4 stars because the modem, firewall, wireless, switch, router was all stuck into one box and it worked once it was fully patched. The missing star is because Netgear sold the modem with firmware that was clearly defective.

Would be great but.......2007-06-20
This unit would be a great combination modem/wireless router except that I cannot set any of the security features. I have spent more than 3 hours on the phone with Motorola technicians and have tried two units. Both have this problem and the technicians do not how to correct it.
Works Likes a Charm............2007-06-15
I have Comcast connection and it works very well with it. This is my first wireless modem and I can honestly say i'm impressed. Setup wasn't difficult and once it was registered with Comcast everything went well.
Connectivity is great, no drops even when i'm in my basement the service is good so I can agree that its good...
Decent product with a few short-comings.......2007-06-11
Overall, this is a pretty decent AIO (all-in-one) product. Some things you need to be aware of is that the cable modem portion of this does require a stronger signal than just a regular stand-alone surfboard cable modem. Also, you are required to use its DHCP built-in server, whether you like it or not. You can set static IPs within the settings if you wish though. There are a number of tweaks you can do with this and some areas could be more robust, such as with the wireless security, but in general it is a decent product for a home user.
Excellent item and price!.......2007-05-30
This cable modem is awesome. I've been paying $4 a month to lease a different one from Comcast for over 5 years...ugh...a piece of garbage too. So this will pay for itself in no time, plus it does wireless too! Super easy to get up and running, works great...
Easy to set up, works perfectly.......2007-05-30
the instructions that were included were great, I had no problem setting up my secure wireless network, and now all 4 computers can connect to the internet and each other effortlessly

Customer Reviews:
Happiness is wireless.......2007-06-27
The Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway lets me use my laptop anywhere in the house. Glory Be.
Drops connection frequently, get separate modem & router.......2007-05-19
Linksys has always done well by me but this product dropped a signal after/during anything from basic secure connections to large downloads to small uploads. On its own, it's a real pain to go back and turn it on and off - but may have survived it if the uploads and connections that caused it to crash weren't a major part of our business day. No firmware update to fix it and does not appear to be hope of one anytime soon. It also won't connect a Wii online without first getting it online through other means (friend's house, etc). Everything else about it seems to be just fine, the setup is easy, security is good, it just won't keep a connection live for anything.
From reviews and articles I've read, it looks like this happens with all 'combo units' across the board and, while it's a cool idea to get a modem and router all in one compact package, the problems it causes aren't worth the space, which if you get a compact modem and/or router isn't a big deal anyway.
I replaced this with a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router and a Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem(which in total cost around the same as I paid for this) after less than a month of use and, weeks later have not lost a connection yet and am getting the same level of security with the same ease of setup. Linksys makes good products - this is one, however, to stick away from.
Waste of Time.......2007-05-10
My cable company provided me with a basic non name-brand router that you cannot buy in the store. Works ok but no extra features. Never had any problems. The Best Buy Rep recemmended the WCG200 V2. I ran home and hooked it up and tested the speed. Slightly faster than what I had before and then in less than an hour it crashed. Lost all connectivity. I turned off my computer and the router and then turned everything back on again. Modem worked fine for about 20 more minutes then crashed again. Repeated the steps and it crashed again after 10 minutes. By the way I was doing P2P Torrent Downloading. I imagine for basic Internet activity this is a good product but not for high speed downloading. By the way I am paying for the premium service Speed in in LA which is very fast. The problem is not the Service Provider but the WCG200. I wasted about 4 hours off my time with this piece of junk. Aferwards, I read the reviews to see what other people had to say. I am returning this for the Motorola SURFboard Wireless Cable Modem Gateway (SBG900). I cannot beleive that after being out in the market for 3 years CISCO still has not fixed the problems. Over all the SBG900 is a piece of junk.
Terrible reliability.......2007-05-07
This router/modem is complete garbage.
The router frequently reboots itself spontaneously, causing you to intermittenly lose network connectivity.
This is a replacement for the last WCG200, which I returned because it did the same thing. This last one, however, would also lock up entirely, requiring you to power cycle it.
The spontaneous reboot issue seems to be load based, opening multiple pages or graphics intensive pages seems to trigger it. (I work in an enterprise datacenter, and can't IMAGINE that a device has trouble handling such small loads.) I have contacted Linksys technical support about it a couple of times, and they were remarkably unhelpful, suggesting that I may have recieved not one, but two bad routers, and should exchange them at the store I purchased them from.
I do NOT reccomend this product.
Poor product, poor service........2007-05-06
I had a Linksys WCG200 v.2. I was experiencing loss of connection when I started downloading torrents, from P2P applications, even updates from Symantec or Microsoft. I contacted my ISP (Suddenlink) who had no firmware updates and Linksys who had no other suggestion rather than to replace my router with the same model. I had thought of Linksys products to be sub par prior to their alliance with Cisco, but it seems like they still are sub par for the course. I then started reading reviews and Linksys forums to see if anyone had a solution for this, and to my surprise none was found. The reviews I had read prior to ordering this device was only half of what everyone thought of it. I finally got tired of my WCG200 and started reading reviews on other cable gateways and found that the Motorola Surfboard SBG900 is receivng excellent reviews. It not only has the capability to configure more advanced settings than the WCG200 but it is keeping my connection steady, regardless of what I'm downloading. I immediately noticed an improvement in connection stability and I've even got a built in firewall! The only downside to it is that it only has one ethernet port, which is fine as long as my wireless is moving at the fast speeds that it should be. As soon as I noticed the improvement in stability, I packed the Linksys back in its box and took it back. My advice to anyone experiencing this issue: if your ISP does not provide firmware updates for this device, purchase another cable gateway.

Workable Modem.......2006-10-08
The pros of these modems is they are cheap, got mine for $20.00.
Cons are that the modem lacks some common sense end user controls. Such as you can't turn off wireless connectivity totally. You can only change the last digit of modem's router IP address.
The modem is also try to be a bit too accomidating to your ISP. When you first connect the modem is in RG mode (residental gateway) and works as modem and a router. When the modem first connects to your ISP, it will asked your ISP what mode to be in, and the ISP can turn off the router fuction and put it into CM (cable modem) mode.
In CM mode it doesn't work well connected to another router (for example if you have a router with more advanced wireless features, VPN, or a better firewall).
I was just about to take this modem back for a refund when I figured out a back door to get it back into RG mode.
1) Get the modem talking with your ISP, once you can connect and surf fine with a direct connection on one PC....
2) Hit the factory reset button. This will put the modem back into RG mode, but your ISP will still talk to it because the MAC and serial# match.
3) Should work with your router, just remember that the modem only works on IP addresses in teh range 192.168.0.1 to 255 , so if your router has been set to some other IP like 192.168.1.1 you'll need to change it.
Don't forget to set up a password on the wireless, as it default to an open net, and the router needs a new password also.
Oh and it is only DOCSIS 1.1
Average customer rating:
- Piece a garbage
- Possible solution for dropped connections
- Repeatedly Drops Connection

Piece a garbage.......2007-01-03
This is a great product! ...(if the computer your sending the wireless signal to is 5 feet away)
I got this product back in 2005, because i have my internet connection (high speed cable) connected to the upstars of my home, and i needed a connection to the downstairs, and wasn't going to pay an extra 50$ a month to wire it, so i got this router and a iwreless adapter for the downstairs computer hooked it up, easy, and simple, established a connection easily, but after a few minutes the connection began to die down to 2 bars...then one... (out of 5 bars) then two..then one...then it went out, i right clicked the wireless connection icon in my system tray, hit repair connection and it worked!....then it proceeded to degress to one bar.....then go out again. In other words if you dont mind right clicking the connection icon and repairing it (which includes waiting about a minute for it to reconnect) every five minutes then go ahead, but ive been dealing with this for almost two years now, and im finding something else DO NOT BUY BUY SOMETHING STRONGER
Possible solution for dropped connections.......2006-07-28
I had both the whole unit stop working and the strange wireless connection freezes. I have this gateway and the solution to the dropped connections and lock ups was to put a very small fan blowing on the router. It's possible that it's an overheating problem, even when the room is relatively cool. I read about the possible overheating problem somewhere, and my connection has been completely solid 24/7 for several months since I put the fan on it. Before that, it was dropping the connection daily and required pulling the power plug to reset the connection.
This product was given to me by Comcast when I ordered the Home Networking option.
The connection IS much better now with this modem than it was before with my own store-bought cable modem, but that is not saying much.
In summary: This unit sucks, don't buy it - and I like Netgear products.
If this review helps you with your problem, please bump it (click on 'Yes' it was helpful)
Repeatedly Drops Connection.......2006-05-05
I have the same problem as several other reviewers. The box repeatedly drops the wireless connection and has to be rebooted. I'm actually on my third one, the first two having been replaced by Netgear after the same problem. Reviewers who love it tend to be those who just set it up. Setup was easy and the unit worked beautifully in the beginning but as another reviewer said, it seems to run too hot and just wears itself out. The drops initially only happened every few days, now a few times a day and any time I attempt to move a large amount of data. Alas, will have to replace the unit again.
Long term failure.......2005-07-07
I've had this product for a little over a year now, and I'm about to toss it and move a to a Linksys.
Over the life of the unit it has had occasional Internet drop outs that would require the unit to be powered off and on to recover. This happened infrequent enough to be a small nuisance that didn't rise to the level of replacement.
Unfortunately recently the wireless of router has been dropping and then last week completely failed. Of course being out of warrantee, no support is offered.
My guess as to the failure is that the unit simply runs too hot. Not enough engineering and too much in too little of a package. You could use it as coffee warmer.
The reviews on the Linksys WCG200 look good and I'm braving the Comcast tech support tonight.
Same problems as previous review.......2004-07-27
I have had this router/gateway for the past year.
Since then, it has basically stopped working for any kind of long transfer between two wireless devices (i.e. more than 50Mb sustained.) The router will completely crash; while the lights still flash, 802.11b and 10Base-T connections do not transit data.
I called their customer support line and was treated extremely rudely. They basically said it was my problem and too bad.
I will never buy another Netgear product again. A shame, as they used to have much better hardware and support (then again, this was back in 1999...)

Piece of Cake...and it works great with my Mac.......2003-09-11
... The cable modem portion (through an ethernet cable) works seamlessly and I got connected to my comcast.net net account with in 15 minutes of being out of the box (10 of those minutes were spent getting to a human with Comcast...I received my wireless card 4 days later (Macsense WPE-700 AEROCARD PLUS WIRELESS PCCARD). I did not have to load any software for the Motorola (gotta love a Mac) and made sure to have the most current software from Macsense for my wireless card. I followed the VERY simple instructions from Macsense. A quit reboot (and inserting my wireless card)...Poof it worked.
Another major concern of mine was going through floors and walls. My wireless system works great through 4 walls and one floor without any loss in signal...just like CNET said. I have not yet hooked up the print server and I am not completely convinced that I can do that for my USB printer, but otherwise it lived up to its expectations.
Motorola Tech Support.......2003-08-28
I purchased this item from Amazon, and have had problems with it. If I run it at the defaults, with no firewall enabled, things are ok, altho I suspect it as being the cause of occassional dropped connections. But I want to enable the firewall, and not being familar with hardware firewalls, I called Motorola Tech Support. Well, they DON'T SUPPORT THEIR FIREWALL!! So, this product is going back.
