One of the slimmest scanners on the market, the Canon LiDE 50 measures less than two inches high and includes a desktop stand for nearly invisible vertical storage. This doesn't mean it can't handle your originals--thanks to the Z-lid design, the LiDE 50 can accommodate items up to an inch thick while keeping them totally flat for absolutely impeccable scans.
48-bit color and a 16-bit grayscale provide rich tones and clear contrasts; the 1,200 x 2,400 optical resolution (9,600 x 9,600 dpi interpolated) handles the rest with clean, crisp detail. USB 2.0 interface means there's a single cord that supplies both power and connection, as well as a speedy transfer of data.
Bundled with the scanner is an impressive array of software for both Windows and Macintosh OS systems that will allow you to convert, smooth, and organize your images in a variety of ways. Perfect for home use, the Canon LiDE 50 is backed by a one-year warranty with Instant Exchange service.

Windows XP : OK - KO on MAC OS X.......2007-06-02
It worked alright and for all the features on Windows read the other reviews, as they are quite detailed in my opinion.
The scanner works, it scans, could be a little more userfriendly on the toolbox interface, but especially the assignment of scanbuttons to certain programs or filetypes is fully functional and working, after getting used to the configuration.
However, I have virtualized my windows machines and have them running now on a MACBOOK with an intel dual core 2 GHz and 2 GB RAM, with MAC OS X ( 10.4.9 ), using vmwares' fusion beta.
Starting up the scanner even in (virtual) windows, the scanner gets found, whether on an USB hub or directly attached to one of the USB 2.0 Ports. The Toolbox finds it and I can scan just as on my real Windows machines.
Now, after installing the Canon Driver on the Macbook (b3B12enx.bin) and the toolbox (toolbox_s4103enx.bin) as described in the installation manual, I can happily find the scannerdriver in the import menue in photoshop, even the toolbox discovers the driver , but after i click SCAN, the error is "Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected. Check Status. Scanner Driver will be closed."
Now, this is one of the error messages I am used to see from windows , so I suspect this error comes from the unsuccessful programming of the canon driver for MAC OS.
I even suspect, Canon hasn t taken the time to INSTALL THE SCANNER ON A MAC THEMSELVES.
As I am now doing most of my work on the mac, I will sell the scanner here. anyone wants to have it, send a mail. Rob

Better than I expected. Glad I bought it........2005-06-08
I have seen usb bus complaints by windows XP when I plugged in non-powered hub with my jumpdrive trio, so I didn't think XP and/or the PC itself, provided very much usb power. But this little scanner does just fine with it's only power source being the usb bus.
The software install was one of the most informative I've ever done. It lets you know where you are at in the process.
It starts out saying that there are like 8 programs left to install, and then the countdown just keeps going, automatically.
You don't have to go hunting for the install buttons for each and every single program. It's setup to auto install things one after another.
You simply say Yes or No, to each program and/or component.
Scanner operation is smooth and quiet. It's hard to get used to NOT hearing the scan head movements.
So far, so good.
Two thumbs up !
Unfortunately, it didn't work out.......2005-01-19
Scanning of black and white text was excellent at 300 dpi, but not legible at 72. However, scanning of photographs or color pictures in a book is the reason I'm returning this scanner. I scanned a dozen or so different pictures, and all were significantly off in their color balance. Some were too red, some were too dark, some were too green. And obviously so. Of course I was able to bring the levels back to normal using Photoshop, but this shouldn't be necessary. As a comparison, I never had to go through color balance adjustment with Canon's LiDE 80.
I expected more. Easy to unpack, easy to use, black and white scanning worked great. But color scanning was subpar.
If you want to scan more than one page- forget it !.......2004-08-03
However the printer driver is unbelievable annoying. You have the option to use default scanning settings ( for b&w, greyscale, magazine, text) or to manually adjust the settings for each picture. The options are standard but the preview window is very small (too small). Thus you have to guess very often. But the worst feature of this driver is, that there is no way to save some of your own settings. You have to make the same adjustments all over again - for every single page of a document you are scanning ! (This affects every software you are using).
This is unacceptable - on the other hand they deliver a well working OCR program with scanner (0mnipage). What are they thinking?
