Bad Support. No Windows XP driver..........2002-02-05

Be aware buyers. Epson still doesn't have windows XP driver for this scanner. There is absolutely no reason the drivers are not ready as of Feb 2002. Even the ones coming out is not certified by Microsoft. I usually like Epson printers but this scanner is totally useless with my Windows XP system.

Returned Scanner.......2001-08-29

Scanning on the Epson 1640SU initially worked well. It was very fast, and the documents looked very good on my display. However, two of the main reasons that I wanted to use a scanner were making copies of documents and faxing documents. After I started using the Epson 1640SU scanner, I found out that I could not do either function, even though they say that they can. After days of effort with Epson technical support, I found out that the scanner would make copies, if I had an Epson printer, which I did not. Finally, one of the technical people referred me to a 3rd party SW firm that had a "patch" that would allow copying to non-Epson printers. I tried that, but my non-Epson printer was apparently not on their list, so it still did not work. Then, in order for me to fax a document, I found out that the process involved a multistep operation that I was never able to make work. After a week of effort trying to make this work, I sent the scanner back. I sent a note to Canon and HP asking them specifically about the faxing and copying, and they both replied that they work with any printer and any fax SW. I will probably try Canon or HP.

Perfection 1640SU is my first scanner, so i can not compare it to anything, but it works very well for me.I think that it is very good product. However, my problem is - communication with Epson technnical support. There is no simple way to resolve simple question of scanner/printer compatability, other than long-to-wait pay-phone connection. To request assistance in initial installation i was invited to fill form with mandatory questions i have no idea about (sound card type, port address, irq etc). It took day of contacts with Gateway to find it all out, by then i spent money on telephone conversations with Epson and resolved problem. By the way, my installation problem resolved when i changed order of things: turned on computer first and scanner second, opposite to what is written in manual.(This was brilliant idea of Epson tech. support specialist over the phone). Since than i have no problems, and hope it will be like this forever.

Great upgrade scanner.......2001-08-07

The Epson 1640u is a great upgrade scanner from a 600x1200 dpi scanner. With the recent drop in price it costs as much as my original 600x1200 scanner. The color and detail is very good. While the scanner is slow for high resolution scans using a USB connection (though a SCSI-2 connection is also available if you buy the cable and card), it still is quicker than the 600x1200 dpi scanner it replaced for more detailed scans. It is highly recommended for photo albums that don't need 8x10 photos.

Fast, accurate, quiet, great support under Linux.......2001-07-22

I got this scanner to replace a UMAX 1220S that I had before. The UMAX had one big problem - I couldn't turn it off. It sat on my SCSI chain and if it saw any traffic it would stay on - since I have CD-ROMs on the same chain it was on constantly! After a while being constantly turned on must have hurt something because after a while I started getting chromatic distortion on sharp edges. So it became time to replace my scanner.

After a lot of research, I settled on either the 1240U or the 1640SU - one thing that helped me decide on Epson instead of another brand is that Epson has helped the Linux scanner programmers (the SANE project) to write drivers for their scanners, unlike other manufacturers that seem to want to keep their hardware interfaces a secret.

After some more deliberation, I decided to go for the 1640SU over the 1240U. The deciding factor? Was it the increased resolution? No - for my purposes 1200dpi would be enough. Was it the fact that it has both a SCSI and a USB interface? No - I had already decided that I didn't want the hassle of a scanner connected to my SCSI port and that I was going to use a USB scanner. So what was the deciding factor that made me spend an extra $$? It seems silly, but it's true - the 1640SU has a power switch. Yes, I was tired of a scanner with no power switch and no way to turn it off. The 1240U is supposed to go into "sleep mode" after some time of not being used, but then again my 1220S was supposed to do that, and you know how that turned out. Also, I had read that there were issues with scanning wide material on the 1240U (supposedly reflections from the ribbon cable inside can leave a bright band across the scan), plus the 1640SU had generally better reviews. So I bought it.

I can say that this scanner does everything I expected and more. The Windows scanning software works fine (I made sure to follow the instructions when I installed it), and then I tested on Linux. My first test was a disaster - the preview looked awful, and the scan was completely green. Then I compiled the latest version of sane (www.mostang.com/sane) and xsane (same site) and tried again. This time it worked perfectly! For grins I tried a 1600x1600 scan of a magazine cover (combined text and picture). The borders of the text were sharp with no chromatic distortion, and I could see all of the halftone dots in the scan. Perfect! As an added bonus, the scanner is *much* quieter than my previous one. The 1640SU makes a low whine when scanning, while the 1220S made a loud rumble. In my opinion, the quietness shows just how much better constructed this scanner is. Also, it has a smaller footprint than the 1220S (although it is somewhat taller).

All in all, I am *very* satisfied with this scanner.

Great over-all scanner!.......2003-08-31

I needed a new scanner to use to to scan many journal articles into PDF format for a personal library. This scanner works without any problems. It is fast and the automatic documnet feeder is great. For scanning photos, the reproduction is also great. I have a Mac running OS X and it is compatible without any problems. A very good scanner for the money. No reservations on recommending this product!

I am no techie by any stretch of the word, but anything that is quick simple easy and fast, I will take. My hubby purchased the scanner for us to scan our wedding pix and in no time I had scanned over 100 pictures. It is quick and quiet, I did not have to crop, lighten, clean up not one single picture. I have recommended this scanner to a lot of my friends. I don't think the software that comes with it is easy to use so my hubby has us using Photoshop, which is just fine by me. I say get it, worth every penny

amazing scanner for old slides!.......2001-12-10

I hesitated a long time before buying this scanner, because it's very hard to know what quality, what definition one needs to get good prints from slides.
This scanner is easy to install, easy to use. For slides, you must use the Twain 5 option in your Twain menu, but everything is very intuitive and you'll find the learning curve quite smooth.
If you are looking to scan slides so that family memories, etc... are not lost, then this scanner is very very good quality for money, the prints you'll get ( with an epson 890 photo printer, it works wonders) are very good. obviously, we are talking of amateur photography here, I guess a professionnal who sells his photographs would want something with extra-definition.
So if you want to be amazed and moved, to rediscover the past... go for it!

Great scanner...well worth it!.......2001-08-17

I purchased this scanner at the end of May...and have been using it since then with great results -- I scan photos mostly, but have also spent a lot of time recently with slides, many of which I took more than 25 years ago -- Just yesterday, I used the transparency adapter to work with a friend's slides from almost 40 years ago -- I used the 1200 dpi setting, then previewed, cropped, and scanned...after which I printed the results on the Espson 1280 -- My friend was extremely pleased with the prints -- I rarely use the maximum of 3200...mostly I use the 800 or 1200 dpi and never have the results been disappointing -- The setup was easy, the software installed without a hitch, the scanner works relatively quickly and very, I consider, quite professionally --I think it's a great scanner.

Epson Perfection Applies to Epson Printers Only.......2001-06-30

This scanner is basically very good. The only problem I have is that of the Epson Smart Panel software. The features of this scanner software includes the ability to do the following:

1. Scan to Email 2. Scan to OCR 3. Scan for Creativity 4. Scan to Application 5. Copy 6. Photo Print

I had no problems with items number 1 - 4. The copy feature did not work and kept giving me error messages. I searched the internet and found a fix that when downloaded, resolved the copy problem.

The Photo Print feature which I was quite interested in, did not work at all. I referred to the user manual and discovered that this feature will only work for Epson Printers. If I had know this initially, I probably would have bought another scanner.

I guess I can't complain since 5 out of the 6 options work. I have since used another application that works with this scanner to fix and resize photos.

A Professional Scanning Instrument at an Accessible Price.......2001-06-10

Epson Perfection 1640SU Photo Scanner

I have an old and trusty Nikon 1000 scanner that has done its duty by me for many years. However, I do a lot of medium and large format work and regret not having a more versatile film scanner. Unfortunately, the big scanners vary in cost from a bit too much to near extortion. Since my flatbed scanner was old and horrible I decided to look into buying one of the better scanners with a transparency head. After a great deal of dithering I settled on the Epson 1640 SU.

Drivers are available for Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 and NT 4.0 I installed into my Win 98 machine with minimal effort, using the USB interface. I went from box to up and running in less than a half hour. The transparency head comes in it's own storage case with a set of film holders for standard film sizes (35mm, 120mm and 4x5, and another for doing Epson instant photo prints). It rests on the scanning glass, so it takes all of 5 seconds to install.

Accompanying Epson software includes TWAIN drivers, Smart Panel (an easy scan and save interface), and Film Factory Lite (home photo management software). Also included are Adobe PhotoDeluxe and Photoshop 5.0 LE. Since I have the Adobe profession products on my system I did not load these, but they are accepted standards. I did load Scansoft TextBridge Pro, a very nice optical character recognition package. Also included are some ArcSoft utilities and a special offer for Monaco Systems color matching software. This makes a package deal which is only exceeded by HP's top of the line scanner, which costs almost twice as much and has less scanning power.

I used a negative from my old Hasselblad with a 150mm lens. I scanned the entire negative at 3600 dpi at the 14 bit black and white setting. File size was 98.87mb and it took about 2.25 minutes to scan. I scanned the image directly into Photoshop 6.0. Resolution and image tonal range was excellent, and extreme enlargement showed image breakdown to be very slow. For my kind of work, the digital image was nearly equivalent to a photographic image. I would rate this as excellent, unexpectedly good for a general purpose scanner.

35mm slide scanning is not as good though. The thickness of the slide makes focus a bit softer and there is no holder for slides. I recommend removing the slide from the paper mount and putting it in the 35mm film holder. Then remount the slide in a plastic, reusable mount. Scanning this way, you get an image that is every bit as good as the 120 image. 4x5 scanning is also great, but you need to watch your file size. Use the provided film holders whenever possible. They take a lot of the trickiness out of the process.

The TWAIN interface is a bit complicated. They have taken the liberty of simplifying operation for the photographer or home user who is uncomfortable with scanning technology. This is all well and good, but once you've got your feet wet and are ready to take direct control the interface feels a bit clumsy. Don't get me wrong, you can do just about anything you want at the scanning point, just expect to have to spend a bit of time with the advanced manuals on the CD.
