Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Release of this software is inexcusable.......2007-05-08

After struggling with this scanner for over a year I finally replaced it with the scanjet 5590 which does everything that the 5550 was supposed to do. Physically the two scanners are identical on the feature set and form factor down to the buttons and hinges. The difference is that the 5590 comes with HP director software version 2.5. The 5550 uses version 2.0. The HP scanning software 2.0 does not load completely on windows 2000 precluding access to adjustments in scanning settings and changes in the default settings. Getting it to work at all took hours and each scan had to be have settings individually set up for an office trying to automate record keeping. What a waste of time and money. HP should give a full refund or replacement for every one of these they foisted on unwitting customers.

1 out of 5 stars I recommend 5 stars if someone will buy this piece of garbage from me!.......2007-02-19

Another corporation trying to take money by maliciously hyping a product. I've had nothing but problems with all HP-created software (including this scanner). I will not use HP again. As my father taught me, "if you hang around with losers, you will become a loser." Don't hang around with HP. You will waste time, money and energy.

1 out of 5 stars Not purchasing these ever again.......2006-03-31

I do IT work and my company is currently purchasing scanners for various departments. I've already had to deploy these scanners and have found nothing but frustration with these machines. I agree with most everyone else's assessment that the software that comes with these devices is horrible. But I also think the scanner itself is just designed poorly. I thought it was just this HP model but doing all the research that I've done to find a better scanner, it seems that all HP scanners get bad reviews (with the exception of All-In-One products). I don't know what is wrong with HP or whether these scanners are even touched by any of their design engineers. I've had good experiences with most of their other products (computers, printers, servers) but their scanner lines just seem like an afterthought. Anyway, if you are looking for a good scanner, I would recommend the Fujitsu Scansnap fi-5110EOX2. We don't have them in our company yet but we do have the more expensive Fi-4220C2 models and I love this scanner. It's fast, the software is designed nicely, and it scans well. And considering the overwhelming positive reviews that the Scansnap has gotten from other Amazon reviewers, I'm pretty sure they use the same technology throughout all of their scanner products. We are currently going to order the higher model fi-5110C to replace all of these junky HP scanners. I will write another review once I know that these scanners work well as well.

4 out of 5 stars Very effective workhorse ADF scanner.......2005-12-29

I like this scanner for a few reasons:
(1) The ADF: If you fan out your paper and try to remove folds in it, the ADF works just fine. It is pretty fast too at around 10 ppm at 200 dpi b/w. Although it says it has a 35 sheet capacity, I regularly load 50-60 sheets into the feeder with no problem. It does have problems occassionally with cardstock and other thick paper, however. I wouldn't recommend it for scanning a load of photos.
(2) I can't speak about the software because I haven't used it...if you just download the TWAIN drivers, you can use Windows XP's scan wizard. This allows you to control whether the scan is from the ADF or regular flatbed. Also allows you to control basic things like brightness/contrast, dpi, bw/color. Also, if you have multiple pages of the same thing like a report, save it as a TIFF file which will allow you to condense the whole thing into one multi-page file which can later be converted to pdf.
All around great scanner and a big time-saver.

1 out of 5 stars For Mac, don't bother, poor customer support.......2005-10-18

We have been using the scanner for the past 10 months now and have nothing but troubles. Out of the box, we had to call tech support several times because the ADF wasn't working well. They basically had to replace the whole unit before we could get it working properly. Then they charge us an extra $150 because they claim that they never received the returned part. The return was arranged by them thru Fedex and the pick-up was completed, but since they claim to have never received it, we were charged. We checked with Fedex but since HP arranged the pickup we could not verify that it was ever delivered to HP. The software is horrible. To get a readable grayscale document, you need a high resolution and thus end up with longer scanning time. Talk about watching molasses drip. It also frequently frezes the iMac. The automatic document feeder frequently eats documents. Has a very good appetite. As a color scanner it works ok but that is not what it was purchased for. It was purchased to scan documents to the computer. It has failed miserably. I have had two other HP scanner/printers/MF machines and none work well with Mac. Skip HP if you have a Mac. Extremely poor customer service....
