The HP ScanJet 6300Cse is a good basic scanner for home or small office use. As with all the Hewlett-Packard scanners, it's extremely easy to set up, and you can set it up and start scanning in no time at all.
Setup and software installation were quick, easy, and intuitive. The oversized installation guidelines are easy to read and simple to follow (although reading them is as cumbersome as wrestling with a full-size road map in the car). If you want additional assistance, you will need to check the electronic owner's manual stored on the CD-ROM, since no printed owner's manual is included. The novice can benefit from using the online coach, which guides you through basic tasks and will have you producing work after a quick and thorough tutorial (10 minutes was all it took for us to run through the steps).
With a warm-up time of just under a minute and a half, the scanner is soon ready to reproduce flat images and slides. The slide adapter is a bit cumbersome, with too much leeway in the placement of the slide, though the scans it produced were vivid. Scanner buttons allow you to scan an image (which is then displayed on screen via the driver software), or use a number of other features. The printer button essentially functions as a copier; just press it once to scan and print. Scanned images can also be easily faxed or attached to an e-mail.
This is a relatively effortless scanner to use, and a good basic model that can meet a wide range of needs. It is an especially good choice for home use. Solutions to most problems can be either intuited or solved with the guide. We were pleased with the crisp images we obtained on both an ink-jet and a laser printer. --David Greenberger
Pros:
- Fast, easy setup
- Slide adapter is cumbersome

it is aweful........2006-01-04
WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY.......2004-04-12
So, $x spent + phone calls + 2 replacements = 1 useless unit. Never will I waste money on any HP item again! *-5 Stars* is more like it!
unstable.......2003-09-04
- not-too-bad results for color photos, especially for web use.
- the film/slide-adapter contraption that it comes with is practically useless. The reflector inside is hazy, and since it is made of cheap plastic, it broke when I tried to use it. The lighting on the resulting images is waay off and the over all quality is pretty bad.
- ScanJet software that it comes with isn't too friendly, but it's ok after you get used to it.
- scanning anything over 300dpi is much slower than expected
- this machine is LOUD!
Well just last night, the scanner literally burnt up and died on me when I connected it to another computer. I'm not sure what exactly happened, but when I ran a test scan, the light burnt out and the slider choked as it tried to scan..leaving a pretty nasty burnt odor in the room for a while...
A total nightmare.......2003-03-19
After 9 months it quit!.......2001-10-12
