Product Description

Amazon.com Review
Perfect for small graphics businesses, professional offices, and other commercial ventures with multiple needs, the Microtek ScanMaker X12USL combines speed, sharp images, and brilliant colors in a single-pass scanner. This scanner offers 1,200 x 2,400 dpi, high-definition 42-bit color for outstanding resolution, a flat bed with a full legal-size 8.5-by-14-inch scanning area, and a software package designed to meet the needs of even the most demanding users.

The ScanMaker X12USL is a solid but light workhorse, weighing in at only 17 pounds. Its design is sturdy but readily transportable and aesthetically clean. With the software bundle, which includes Adobe Photoshop LE 5.0, you can produce outstanding professional-quality images. And editing and enhancing images is a snap with Microtek's ScanWizard5 software, which provides a simple and straightforward approach to navigating through your scanning tasks. The included Trellix Web Microtek Edition and optical character recognition (OCR) software further assist in reading scanned text and editing images. After scanning and editing your images, you can print them or export them to e-mail with a single mouse click.

Most modern scanners are easy to connect and include software that is easy to install, and this is true of ScanMaker X12USL as well. We especially liked the individually zip-locked bags labeled for SCSI or USB connections, and the separate installation and reference guides for Windows and Mac. (You can connect the scanner to either a USB or SCSI port on either a PC or Macintosh, including iMac.) Though setup was easy, we highly recommend reading the well-written, very logical reference guide for the fastest, most trouble-free installation. It took us only 15 minutes from the time we opened the box to the time were were scanning. We were a bit disappointed that the software was not more thoroughly documented. However, once it's set up, the software presents all scanning options in an intuitive onscreen layout.

Overall, we were very impressed with the ScanMaker X12USL, with its formidable software package, and with the resulting dazzlingly color-accurate scans. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Scanner. Easy to Set-Up!.......2004-04-02

This scanner was a charm to set-up. Once the Microsoft SP1a was installed (absolutely necessary for USB 2.0), and the software was loaded, I plugged this scanner into the USB port and it instantly was operational. This is the only reasonably priced legal size scanner and it appears to be an excellent device.

4 out of 5 stars easy to setup.......2003-10-14

Positives: Easy to connect, put in CD, reboot the CPU and plug in the scanner. Done. Speedy lil machine and very usefull since I have a lot of material that is legal sized. ...

Negatives: Scanners today have more buttons, where as this one only has 1 button

5 out of 5 stars Great product for the office!.......2003-10-09

My boss was looking around for a scanner that did legal sized documents and this was it. Most of the other scanners only do letter sized stuff, so if you need legal this is the way to go. Tiger Direct got it out to us pretty quickly and we are happy with it so far. I haven't ventured into the more advanced portion of the software, but the basic function is easy to use. It previews automatically and puts the box around the image so you just hit scan. Very happy so far!

1 out of 5 stars zero stars.......2000-12-15

I've been buying computer peripherals for 10 years and I've never experienced such shoddy software and support. I purchased this scanner on the advice of a respected Macintosh publication. I should have read the other reviews posted on this site first.

First of all, after installing the enclosed software, the scanner failed to work. I called the Microtek LONG DISTANCE support number and was put in a 5 minute que. The first tech person and the next one that I spoke with on three different occasions could not have been more indifferent. They advised me to downloaded a driver patch and 9 MEGABYTE software upgrade from their support site which also failed to drive the scanner. But I think this last piece of information is the most telling. After seaching online newsgroups for a solution, I found a company which designs software for most of the major scanner manufacturers and downloaded the specific DEMO version for this scanner. It actually worked. However, to get a fully functioning version would have cost (triple digits). The bottom line: Microtek doesn't care enough about customers to write software that will make their scanners work for all Mac users. I'm sending it back.

1 out of 5 stars Unreliable & poor service.......2000-12-14

During the first three months of operation, the scanner failed intermittently and then failed completely during the fourth month (just after receiving the rebate check). Then I found out about the lack of a toll free technical support number. Although they have a general toll free number, you are referred to a toll number if it requires any diagnosis. When I finally contacted the RMA department via e-mail (this took 3 business days), I was informed that if they found nothing wrong, it would cost me, and (more money) (whether anything was wrong or not) if they couldn't ship it back using the box I sent it in. They also informed me it would take 5 - 10 business days for them to fix it once they receive it. All the time they made me feel they were doing me a favor. I would avoid both this particular product and the vendor. The software provided did not make using the scanner easy. I'm not looking forward to getting the scanner back.
