The Astra 1220U features an optical resolution of 600 x 1200 dpi, expandable to a maximum resolution of 9600 x 9600, with single-pass scanning for speed and quality color balance. Additionally, it features 36-bit color quality output with UMAX' proprietary Bit Enhancement Technology (BET).

In addition to supporting the iMac or USB-compatible Macintosh systems, the Astra 1220U is also compatible with PCs running Microsoft Windows 95 or 98. With its USB interface for easy plug-and-play installation and compatibility with both Mac and PC systems, the Astra 1220U offers small business and home users a high-quality, robust scanning solution at a very affordable price.

The Astra 1220 products scan photographs, artwork, graphics, 3D objects or any document up to an 8.5" x 11.7" maximum scanning area. Utilizing a charge coupled device (CCD), the UMAX scanners bring out the richness and precision of the original image and offer long scanner life. You MUST install the AS355.exe drivers first and THEN: Run a patch file called "vista_XP.exe"
Your scanner will come to life and work perfectly if you follow this procedure.

UMAX charges to get drivers to run their scanners on XP - what a total con. I reiterate the other commments posted here - DON'T BUY IT - find any other company

I bought an Astra 1220u when it originally came out and have had it for over five years. It has worked perfectly all this time, and the output is excellent, even when using the standard settings. The drivers are compatible with Photoshop, and were easy to use and customize. That said, I've only used it on a Mac, so I don't know how good the Windows software is.

I'm not sure where the product has come, but I own a UMAX 1220S scanner and was absolutely apalled (to coin an old term) to find that I could not download an appropriate driver for WinXP to run it. If it weighed a few pounds more, I could at least use it for a boat anchor!

I don't have the heart to try and peddle it to the next sucker. So chalk this up to the "shame on me" category for making the purchase. I echo the sentiment of other reviewers. DO NOT BUY.. and send a message. I've been in the computing industry for nearly 20 years, and this is the FIRST review that I've felt compelled to submit. Shame on UMAX. I hope the owners have made their keep and can live with their decisions.

Old scanner. Still going after all these years........2004-05-09

I inherited this scanner from my father a few years ago when I was in college. At the time I had a Dell running Windows 98. Then I upgraded my system and am now running Windows XP Pro. The original driver didn't work, although XP had a generic driver that would let the scanner work with limited options.

All I did was search for "umax 1220u driver" on Google and I was easily able to find sites offering the Umax driver that will work with Windows XP, for free.

The scanner and the VistaMax software it comes with still work great! Sure it's not as fancy or small as newer scanners on the market but it does what I need it to do and it was extremely inexpensive. Free!
