Microtek SlimScan C6 USB Flatbed Scanner

Product Description

Amazon.com Review
A great value, the Microtek SlimScan C6 is easy to use and comes with a large selection of software. Its relatively high resolution and multi-function capabilities make it a good choice for the home user.

Setting up the actual scanner was remarkably easy; figuring out how to use all the included software was a bit more difficult. The Microtek SlimScan C6 comes with a handy quick-start guide, but detailed documentation is only available in electronic form.

The Microtek SlimScan C6 comes with a great software installer that lets you load all the different software packages one after another. Once we had installed the software, photo scanning was simple--we pushed the single button on the scanner, and our computer automatically launched the scan program. Scanning and recognizing text was also easy; the optical character recognition (OCR) software was completely accurate for most documents we tried.

The Microtek SlimScan C6 also comes with a variety of image-editing and document-management software. Microtek's ScanWizard was particularly useful, since it let us enhance and edit images before we scanned them. It also has a great descreening feature that makes it possible to scan previously printed material without distorted Moire dot patterns.

In addition to performing well as a simple scanner--giving us relatively good picture quality and medium-to-high resolution (600 x 1200 dpi)--the Microtek SlimScan C6 also functions as a fax machine and can convert a color printer into a color copier. Its incredibly thin form makes it a good choice for those with limited desk space, although at 7.7 pounds it's still not quite a portable scanner.

Product Description:
Enjoy the convenience of one-touch scanning and USB installation with Microtek's SlimScan C6 USB scanner for Windows 98 and iMac. The SlimScan C6 USB flatbed scanner is less than two inches high, only 10.4 inches wide and weighs less than eight pounds. But a small package does not mean small performance. This 36-bit single pass scanner features Contact Image Sensor technology which allows direct contact between the image and the image sensor. This eliminates the need for a bulky mirror system, and results in sharper images, richer colors and a much slimmer device. And Microtek's Zero Reflection Design Technology blocks out any improper lighting to preserve the quality of the scan. The SlimScan C6 USB flatbed scanner features a one-button control for faxing, scanning, and copying. Just push the GO button on the front of the scanner to launch Microtek's ScanSuite software and begin the scan. Scan pages up to 8.5x11.7 inches in size with a 600x1200 dpi resolution (9600 dpi interpolated). Scan in 36-bit color or 12-bit grayscale for billions of colors and 4096 shades of gray.

4 out of 5 stars A fine product, by a fine company........2000-04-04

After being quite content with my now-outdated Microtek E3 SCSI scanner, I decided to go Microtek again with the new slimscan USB. Although I would say that scans are slower than the older SCSI model, the overall quality is much better, and the interface is improved. As mentioned in other reviews, the OCR provided with the package is somewhat weak, but functional. I would recommend purchasing OmniPage Pro by Caere for higher-quality OCR recognition, although this may run you around a hundred dollars, last time I checked. The model is quite thin, although I too have had troubles making the button in the front, which is supposed to launch applications in Windows, functional. All in all a solid purchase at a solid value.

5 out of 5 stars Good Quality Scanner.......2000-04-04

I format my HDD from time to time, but I never had any problem installing the scanner ...even using it. For the price, it is a bargain. Picture quality is good, and I even bought the the device on-line.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to Microtek standards.......2000-01-13

I bought this scanner because of its low profile and "scan" button, and because my Microtek E3 was a great product. Unfortunately, hookup was a problem. Microtek seems to have written their code to require the very latest USB drivers from Intel, so unless you find the right support note on the Microtek web site (and the link to Intel's page) you will be very frustrated hooking this USB device up to your system. Even after a four-hour installation process, I still cannot get the button on the front of the scanner to function properly. The ScanWizard TWAIN driver is excellent, but don't bother installing the rest of the software. The OCR package is particularly poor. The only redeeming thing about this product is its price and it's low profile

5 out of 5 stars Mine works great and the installations was a breeze!.......1999-12-30

I bought the SlimScan C6 in a store, not online, and I was very satisfied! I have the parallel port version. It was very easy to set up. Just plug you printer into your scanner then your scanner into your computer. That's it. The software was easy to. Just follow the on screen directions. Plus the software they gave was great! Overall I thought this product deserves all the stars it can get!

1 out of 5 stars Requirements.......1999-12-26

The system requirements before this was ordered indicated the scanner could be used with Windows 95. Upon receiving the scanner as a gift(ordered thru Amazon) there are no instructions for loading to Windows 95. The outside of the box says Window 98 is a minimum requirement. The scanner seems like it would be a great product. I wish I could use it.
