A great scanner, but it took a little time for me to set it up with the software. Called service at Epson and was so impressed with them. Problem I had with setup was that I had not uninstalled my UMAX software (previous scanner) and there were conflicts. Once I took it off, no problem. Called Epson service later to find out how to use the descreen function in order to scan pics from magazines without getting a moire pattern, but the tech guy said he'd have another more knowledgeable guy call me. The new service tech was top notch and spent (his dime) more than an hour with me on the phone showing me how to set up the scanning for special effects, color adjustments, descreening, and so much more. I recommend you use the "manual" setup rather than the automatic scan setup, and if you have Photoshop you don't need to install their image editing software. Great service. Great scanner. They have a newer one now, model 1660, which I assume is even better.

great quality scans.......2002-10-13

Bought for scanning several family photo albums onto CDs for members of the family. 800+ pictures later, the 1650-Photo is still buzzing along without any gliches.
Installation was easy, done with clear printed directions (onto a Mac G4 running OS 9.2)
The scanner does a quick pre-scan to produce an image you can see to make whatever adjustments for framing, color, contrast, shadow & highlight levels you desire. If you use the Auto mode instead, the software is so "smart" that it will usually produce results as good as you can do using the adjustments mode.
Once you are satisfied with the pre-scan image, you click on "scan", which the 1650 does in about 4 seconds. Thumbnail images of each scanned photo are displayed, along with the option to type in a name for each.
The picture files can be saved into several file types. If you chose .jpg you can adjust the file size, going small for e-mail use, to large for making paper prints.
I have not yet made any scans of photo negatives, but have of jewelry and maps and they turn out great! An excellent product at a very reasonable price.

Not Compatible with Mac OS X.......2002-10-04

I purchased the Epson 1650 Photo Flatbed Scanner 6 months ago. The primary reason I was attracted to this particular model was it's ability to scan 35mm slides. NOT.... Although Epson claims it is Mac compatible, Epson neglects to inform the consumer that the scanner IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the Mac OS X operating system.

Epson has been promising me delivery of the necessary drivers (at an additional cost, accompanied by a sales receipt, UPC bar code, and required application form) for 6 months now. In my latest contact with Epson (Oct. 3,2002) I am told they "do not know when the driver will be available".

So in conclusion, you owners of Mac computers - don't consider buying this product if you expect to use it as a scanner ... for anything else? ... it's up to you!

Really great scanner........2002-08-02

It is pretty fast and quite quiet scanner. It is slow to scan negatives. VueScan seems to work very well with this scanner and scanned pictures without any color correction look very similar to originals, which gives you idea of quality of this scanner. Problem is slight dust underneath glass which is pain in the neck. Looks that Epson quality control is lacking. It should not happen. Made from Japanese components. If you want quality scanner then go for it but be prepaired for dust (yuck). I guess I will have to clean this glass myself because I don't want Epson to replace my scanner with refurbished one.

Not PERFECTION but close.......2002-07-20

I've been using this scanner for 9 months now and am extremely pleased with it. My only gripe might be that their is no on/off switch. Have to plug and unplug it all the time. I use the copy function on it all the time in my home office and it works great. I also use it as my fax machine and that works well also. Have had great luck with scanning photo's and good results. The only problems I've encountered was doing old slides. Had to go in and manually take control to get them to scan to my liking. Other than that I leave everything on auto and all has been good. Mine is hooked to a HP N5495 laptop with Win XP and has encountered no problems. Great scanner!!!!

OK Scanner for most work..........2007-04-09

This scanner produces fair results for most work. There is a major flaw in the design that prospective buyers should know. The assumption is that when scanning negatives, there will be a difference in density between the edge of the frame and the inter-frame space. This is usually, but not always the case. I have a large project involving photographing small items against a black background. I carefully exposed so that the black background produces no density on the negative. This allows the maximum dynamic range for the object I'm photographing. This scanner refuses to scan the entire strip. I get nothing. If you need a scanner for negatives, this is probably not the one to get.

THIS SCANNER IS NOW WORTHLESS.......2006-02-03

Worked fine when first installed. Lost hard drive and now ubable to re-install. Have done extensive and very time consuming research on the problem to no avail. Have un-installed and re-installed several times, following the instructions carefully.
Keep getting the same error message when trying to open the so called "Smart Panel". ......

"APPLICATION FAILED TO INSTALL BECAUSE: ISM.DLL WAS NOT FOUND. REINSTALLING ALLPICATION MAY FIX THIS PROBLEM"

Well this did not fix the problem and I now have an expensive EPSON PERFECTION 1160 PHOTO scanner whih is useless. No help from online support.

Don't buy this scanner........2005-11-17

I had the scanner for maybe a year. I didn't use it much. Without any reason it stopped working properly. All the images I scan are blurry with blue and red all over. Terrible!!!

Bought the so-called Mac compatible scanner last year and it worked with OS 9. I went to do this years batch of scans using OS X and no go. Image Capture doesn't see it connected via USB. An Apple Support document indicates that the 1660 Photo driver is NOT a built-in driver in Mac OS X. I downloaded most the recent software (epson11208.sea) from Epson website, installed it...the scanner app won't even startup!

Great, especially for the price.......2004-08-14

First of all, I have a Mac, so that plays into any computer equipment purchases. You'd be surprised how many peripherals still don't work with Macs. That said, Epson has always had excellent Mac support. They provide updated drivers soon after Apple releases new versions of OS X. This is definitely not true of other scanner manufacturers (like Microtek).

Anyway, this is a great scanner. It offers plenty of resolution (1600 dpi optical) and does a good job with slides and negatives. Slides scanned at 1600 dpi come out with slightly more resolution than a two-megapixel digital camera. If you need more detail than that, you'd be better off buying a dedicated film scanner. But for the price this one does an excellent job.

I really like Epson's TWAIN software. it has three levels of complexity: Home, Office, and Professional. The first two give simple options and make all the choices for you. Professional provides a surprising amount of control and dispenses with all of the assistants and helpers (which I find maddening).

As someone who only recently got around to upgrading to XP Pro SP2, I discovered that I needed to upgrade the software for my 1650.

No problem.

Epson has a new v5.71A TWAIN driver and NewSoft, for a mere $ 9.95, has an upgraded downloadable version of Epson Smart Panel.

Download, install, back in business. Great scanner.

3rd year review. Good hardware but software is problematic........2006-03-28

As with the other reviewer from a while ago, I installed and uninstalled Epson's 1650's software several times on different machines. It left a lot of bugs. I had trouble having it work with other programs.

But most of all, right now I am trying to use the scanner again on several new computers I have, and surprisingly enough, Epson's website does not carry the Epson Smart Panel application. You only get the Twain drivers so that means I am out of luck with trying to scan anything except if I hunt around for another party's software that would work with this twain driver. If you think you will rely on epson's website to get your updated application for this scanner, you are out of luck.

Fast, reliable, and easy to use.......2004-06-06

You can't go wrong with this. I've had it for over 2 years now, and am still loving it. Even though it is USB it is extremely fast. Another plus, is that the linux drivers are awesome.

NOT for XP Pro..........2004-03-13

This scanner worked fine on ME, but we all know how well ME works. I upgraded to XP PRO, and just can't get the software to work. Mechanically, the scanner is fine, but the software and support from Epson and Newsoft has left a lot to be desired. I have spent HOURS on the phone to both support groups, but error code (-115) seems to be unbeatable. Never mind, Epson, I'll buy the Canon next time. Vote with your dollars.

Easy to use, good quality, fast enough.......2003-08-24

I'm very happy with this scanner - most photos scanned only require some basic dust and lint correction in PhotoShop or similar. Can scan negatives or slides, though the interface to do this is a little less than ideal and it's easier to scan prints if you have them. Software provided is flexible, allows scanning to files or scan to printer (copy feature). TWAIN interface allows interaction with PhotoShop or other software directly - easy to acquire new images. When I bought this scanner, a lot of folks were complaining about the dust on the backside of the glass, but I didn't really see much of that with mine. It is a little difficult to keep clean, though.
