Ideally suited for small or home businesses with a variety of scanning needs, the Microtek ScanMaker 3700 combines speed, sharp images, and brilliant colors in an easy-to-use single-pass scanner. It offers 600 x 1,200 dpi optical resolution (9,600 x 9,600 dpi interpolated), 42-bit color depth, a flatbed with a full 8.5-by-11.7-inch scanning area, and a software package designed to meet the needs of most serious users. To set up the scanner, we followed the reference guide, connecting the power and USB cables and installing the driver software. From the start of setup, we especially liked the fast installation and easy-to-read instructions with minimal fluff. (We highly recommend following the enclosed and very logical reference guide for the fastest trouble-free installation.) It took us only 15 minutes to go from opening the box to scanning documents.

In our tests, editing and enhancing images was a snap, thanks to Microtek's ScanWizard5 software, which provides a simple and straightforward approach to navigating through a variety of scanning tasks. All our choices (input and output type, resolution, color depth, and so on) were onscreen for easy selection. We enlarged wallet-size photos to 8 by 10 inches while maintaining their image clarity. We scanned 35mm slides and filmstrips with the LightLid add-on component, but with mixed results. This scanner did not yield the high-resolution images we've seen from similar systems with built-in film-scanning abilities. For documents with both text and images, Trellix Web Microtek Edition and OCR software assisted in converting the text into an editable form and then easily reconfiguring and positioning the images. For copies, we pressed one button for a quick scan and print. Pressing another button delivered our scanned documents to e-mail. All of these operations were intuitive or easily mastered with only a little practice.

The ScanMaker 3700 is a solid workhorse, measuring 20 by 11.4 by 4.6 inches yet weighing only 8 pounds. Its sturdy but readily transportable design and clean three-button operation make it a good all-purpose scanner. --Barbara Price

The main thing I wanted to do with this scanner was to scan and then email my pictures to friends and family. This scanner is USB and under $... many stores!!! It's quiet and the picture quality is great for it. I have no complaints yet on it, works like a charm. Setup instructions and software were included so with most any USB you just plug and play!

Avoid at all costs.......2003-05-11

Microtek should be embarrassed to have ever brought such a poorly designed, poorly built scanner to the market. The bulb is unbelievably fragile and can only be replaced by Microtek, shipping prepaid, and they want nearly as much for the "free" replacement as the scanner cost. My experience matches others I know who bought this scanner: mean time between failures of the bulb is 30 days. Buy something decent, from a company other than Microtek.

I bought this scanner about a year ago and have been using with the family IMAC. The scans come out poorly. The software that came with the scanner conflicts with my zip drive. It is so "unfriendly" that no one in the family uses it.

Save your money, buy a rock for a paperweight and treat yourself to dinner.

I purchased my Microtek product less than a year ago. Actually, it was 7 months ago. The product stopped scanning some 2 months ago. Because Microtek does not provide the consumer with a warranty, for obvious reasons, I was stuck with it. I do not recommend that any one purchases a Microtek product. I will only buy Canon or HP. I'm forced now to go out and buy another scanner soon. Its very frustrating. I, like the others, experienced that the lamp stayed on. And for me, the scanning "rod" inside would not move and scan the objects. Now please note that I have used this scanner all of 10-15 times since I've purchased it, so its not like I've used it daily. Again, stick with the big guys (Canon and HP). With them you get better customer service, warranties, and quality products. And you wont end up being the guinea pig since they are still trying to get this thing right.

lamp problem.......2002-02-16

After having the scanner for a little over a year the lamp burned out. I called Microtek and the only way to replace the bulb is to send the scanner to them and pay up to 200.00 to replace the lamp! To make things worse I had to hold for 20 minutes long distance. They don't even have an 800 customer service number. I'm going to buy a new scanner today and will not buy from Microtek again. I would recommend the same to everyone.
