    Book Description

Johann Joachim Quantz's On Playing Flute has long been recognized as one of the most significant and in-depth treatises on eighteenth-century musical thought, performance practice, and style. This classic text of Baroque music instruction goes far beyond an introduction to flute methods by offering a comprehensive program of studies that is equally applicable to other instruments and singers.

The work is comprised of three interrelated essays that examine the education of the solo musician, the art of accompaniment, and forms and style. Quantz provides detailed treatment of a wide range of subjects, including phrasing, ornamentation, accent, intensity, tuning, cadenzas, the role of the concertmaster, stage deportment, and techniques for playing dance movements. Of special interest is a table that relates various tempos to the speed of the pulse, which will help today's musicians solve the challenge of playing authentic performance tempos in Baroque music. This edition includes 224 musical examples from Quantz's original text and features a new introduction by translator Edward R. Reilly that considers recent scholarship on Quantz's significant role in eighteenth-century musical activity.

On Playing the Flute vividly conveys the constancy of musical life over time and remains a valuable guide for contemporary musicians.

5 out of 5 stars On Playing the Flute by Johann Joachim Quantz.......2002-04-29

I have not read this book from cover to cover. Although, with it's wonderful index, it has provided me with an excellant resource manual for Baroque music.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for players of any 18th C music, not only flute.......2001-03-30

Articulation, aesthetics, phrasing, ornamentation, character, tempo, practicing, accompaniment, style, notation, how to give a concert, how to breathe when you're nervous, how to play in an orchestra, ... it's all here. This book from 1752 covers the art of being a musician, not just a flute player.

Quantz' text is for anyone who cares about any music from about 1720 into the time of Mozart and Haydn. And it's essential performance practice material for anyone who would play this music: required reading for any serious student. It gives an indispensable window into German, French, and Italian taste.

Modern flautists, string players, keyboard players, and singers can learn a tremendous amount here. The pages about "good" and "bad" notes and varied articulation/tongueing are worth the whole price of the book. They describe the sound that composers were thinking of, the expressive range, the tremendous variety of effects *within* melodic lines. Take Quantz seriously: he was there, and he was a good player and writer.

What more needs to be said, except to thank the publisher for this edition? The previous issue by Schirmer has been out of print for far too long. This book should NEVER be out of print.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction.......2007-06-27

I knew nothing about the flute when I bought this book. I was pleased to not only learn a lot about the history and variety of flutes, but also to successfully purchase, assemble and begin to play a flute based on the author's clear and competent guidance. When I found a flute teacher, she was also impressed with the range of information the book presents, and added it to her recommended list. I am less than halfway through the book, so I can't comment on the more advanced sections, except to say that they appear to cover all aspects of music theory.

    4 out of 5 stars Happy Flautist.......2007-03-31

I purchased this book as a gift for my flute student and found myself reading it before I gave it to her! The history of the instrument is well detailed and there are interesting sections on the different types of flutes around the world. This is an excellent book for anyone interested in flute lore as well as caring for their instrument

    5 out of 5 stars Shepard's enthusiasm is contagious!.......2005-04-13

Mark Shepard's book has been an invaluable help to me in relearning how to play the flute after a 20 years break. I played in high school and had virtually forgotten everything about playing the flute. It all came back to me through the very relevant information presented in "How to Love your Flute". Shepard's enthusiastic approach to the flute is absolutely contagious. Thanks to Mark Shepard for rekindling my interest.

Here are the two most important rules for tuning:

These rules mean you can "raise" a note by enlarging the hole or by placing the hole closer to the mouthhole. You can "lower" the note by using a smaller hole or by placing the hole farther from the mouthhole.

It also means you can change the hole size and its placement without changing the note. A larger hole could be placed farther from the mouthhole, or a smaller hole placed closer to the mouthhole.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Simple Flutes by Mark Shepard.......2006-12-20

My interest in flutes began years ago by making several pan flutes from Bamboo and acrylic tubing. After a trip to Peru in 2004 I became interested in quenas...end blown Andean flutes. My ambitions then carried through to wanting to make transverse flutes. I have found the book Simple Flutes perfect for my initial foray into trans-flute making. I am impressed with the economy of words that conveyed much information. It is a good doorway to other references. The G flute described in this book was easy to build and works very well. More detailed data for other sizes would have been welcome. However, more ponderous book might discourage the neophyte into not carrying through with making one's first flute. Mark's book and instructions made it easy to be successful, which then whets the appetite to get more involved with flutes in other keys.
A great, simple to read handbook for someone starting in this fascinating hobby.

    5 out of 5 stars A source of joy.......2006-10-29

I have just started making flutes as a hobby, because I thought it would be interesting, and to knock out a few cheap Christmas presents for a myriad of nieces and nephews. I did not anticipate what a source of joy making flutes would be for its own sake. This book got me started and will remain the most senior of my teachers as long as I do this. What you do not find in its lines, you will find between them as you grow in the experience. I am sure there are many more advanced books out there, but they will be useless without the foundation that this book provides.

4 out of 5 stars Basic stuff for makers, players & listeners.......2005-02-25

The book only contains about 35 pages of large type text, so don't expect much detail. The 5 or so pages on playing are really basic, only helpful to someone who knows absolutely zero about flute playing. The book only gives exact mathematical dimensions for making a pvc flute in G, which you can find at the author's website (www.markshep.com/flute). All other flute dimensions are given as 'about' & 'generally'. Nonetheless, the book provides a foundation for someone with a trained ear to be able to start making simple flutes, refining thier skills through trial & error. Overall the information in the book is more than worth the price. As a half hour read it is well worth reading by everyone interested in making, playing or listening to flutes. The knowledge gained versus the money & time invested ends up being a real bargain. The book also provides resources on where to go for more and more detailed information.

4 out of 5 stars Really good detailed book, but only for transverse flutes.......2002-08-10

The charts and pages on every aspect of making your own flute
are all here, with explanations of WHY, and several options
    for finishes, materials, keys, etc.

If you're going to make anything OTHER than a transverse flute,
such as a Shakuhachi or recorder, look on the Web for supplemental material,
but still I'm still glad I got this as a reference. (He also has a bibliography in the back.)

For instance, even the length/bore ratio changes for some
other woodwinds. But the basic info is very handy to keep around.

5 out of 5 stars A highly practical guide to crafting simple flutes.......2002-08-09

Simple Flutes by Mark Shepard, a slim (44 pages), elegantly presented, and highly practical guide to crafting simple flutes and making music with them. Flutes of bamboo, wood, claw, metal, and plastic are authoritatively discussed. Simple line drawings and easy-to-understand instructions enhanced and round out this first-rate, "user friendly" guide for anyone with a fondness toward simplicity in their own personal music. Also highly recommended is Mark Shepard's How To Love Your Flute: A Guide To Flues And Flute Playing (0938497103,...).

5 out of 5 stars Foundation to Flute Playing - Ernest Wagner.......2007-04-19

I have been using this book in my teaching for over 10 years. If followed Lesson by Lesson and not skipped around on it gives an exceptional workout for the student. Each lesson works on the topic at hand using various finger patterns and techniques to enable the student to attain the skills needed to complete the lesson and become a better player. It is not really geared toward the younger players but is for someone who has had 1-2 years of band in school. It mainly focuses on sharp keys, where most band methods only touch on these. However, flat keys are also used throughout the book. The book progresses from medium easy to very difficult and my students who work diligently in this book are usually in the top three chairs of their band program.
    An excellent teaching method.

5 out of 5 stars Great thorough method book from beginner & beyond.......2002-02-14

...This is a great book to use with beginners & all the way thru high school & even college & adult. It starts very basic, but doesn't move as fast as other method books do, & it's big enough to include exercises on many different levels. It includes scales & arpeggio studies, sections in articulation, rhythms, technical & embouchure exercises, songs to work on sound & musicality with, & advanced etudes by Wagner. Of course it doesn't include accompanied solos or anything, but it has just about all the basic things a progressing flutist needs to work on. The only other thing missing is duets. If you like the way method books like Rubank focus mainly on one or 2 key signatures per page or 2, then you will feel comfortable using this. I personally prefer books like that so that students don't get confused with too many key changes from one exercise to another. Though it's not the definitive method book to teach with or play out of, it is a highly recommended addition.

5 out of 5 stars History lesson for the silver flute.......2006-12-04

This publication presents a detailed history lesson on the silver flute and its creator. This book offers inspiration and clarification to many rarely addressed technical issues for those dedicated to the lifetime adventure of playing the flute.
In addition to the method, composition, and other insights, the copied letters, notes, and drawings throughout the book(many still in their original German, handwritten format) are an added treat.

I also like the binding and paper used in the publication. It just feels different than your usual paperback, there is a firmness and longevity in this publication that seems more solid and durable.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting history of the design of the modern flute.......2006-02-27

As an engineer and a long time saxophone player who recently started learning the flute, I had many questions about why the flute was designed the way it was. This book is a translation of Boehm's notes on his life's work of transforming the old simple wooden flutes into the much more advanced modern flute. The translator did an excellent job, and includes many side notes of his own to explain more about what Boehm was talking about and to add interesting historical and technical points. Now I understand why certain notes are harder to play than others, why certain trade-offs were made, and how to play the instrument better. The result is a much simpler and more elegant design than the saxophone, and a professional instrument that you can fit in your glove box! And learning about the flute design has also helped me understand the design of the related saxophone and clarinet better. Boehm was a brilliant and dedicated inventor, craftsman and musician, so his story is both interesting and inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable for all flutists........1999-09-09

I lost my copy of this book, which I deeply regret. Boehm, as any flute player knows, invented both the key mechanism and concept of the conical, rather than cyndrilical flute. He also, in addition to being one of the finest flutists of his age, was the first to make flutes from metal, having trained as a goldsmith.

This book details his research into the acoustical properties of the flute, as well as the key mechanism, and why he felt the need to improve them. I feel that any flutist will benefit from an understanding of why the modern flute is as it is.

Boehm also includes invaluable hints on the correct manner of playing the flute. And who better to do so than the man who developed it to its' current level of perfection? His complete knowledge of the instrument is shown in this treatise.

Overall, an indispensable book for flutists, and other windplayers who play on Boehm system mechanisms (eg: clarinets, oboes, bassoons, saxophones). Don't miss!

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating glance into the history of modern flute.......1999-05-28

This book is a journey into the development of the modern flute by Theobold Boehm in mid-19 century. It reveals the combination of the artistic approach mixed with science, craftsmanship and persistence of Boehm to perfect the flute to what we know today. The transition from wood to metal, the new mechanism - all are groundbreaking. Another part of the book deals with flute playing and practicing. A must for anybody interested in acoustics of musical instruments. After reading this book I cannot but admire Boehm and his contribution to the world of music!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a book for the serious student.......2006-07-04

This book is, by far, one of the best I have found on actual physiological considerations in flute playing. The author is complete in his detailed descriptions of the irksome and oft times unanswered flute challenges such as tone quality and high register issues. He provides realistic and straightforward solutions. He examines, diagnoses and treats embouchure problems like a skilled, and patient physician.

He truly shares his expertise and instruction in flute. He picks up where the local band and orchestra teacher falls short.

I am very very happy with this book. His solutions offer immediate results and this is very satisfying. Unfortunately, there are not more books out there like this one.

Most method books offer little, if any REAL flute-specific information. Rather, we are subjected to mix and match titles on generic, mass-printed pages.

The introduction pages alone, on care and selection of flute, provide more information than most 'method' books with their series and sequels combined.

This book will not bore you with more folk songs, polkas, or sing along tapes. This text finally offers some real information and instruction from an articulate and expert master of flute.

If you really want to develop as a flute player, this is a great book to have in your library.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Flute Playing - A Definite Must-Have.......2000-06-20

The Art of Flute Playing is a definite must-have for all aspiring flautists, young and old. As a professional for 10 years now, and a current flute teacher/tutor, I strongly recommend this book to all my students. Even today, I constantly refer to it every once in a while. Go, buy it.
