5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book... Ann Landers Was Awesome.......2003-02-09

I'm such a huge fan of Ann Landers! I read this book after her death, actually, but she continues to inspire me. A while before she died I started to cut out her newspaper columns and store them... But reading a book of them is better!
Very funny and extremely weird in some parts, and sad or gross or touching in others. I recommend it. It's entertainment!
As always, Ms. Landers gives her brilliant advice... And even if you don't always agree with what she says, it'll get you thinking. And that's something, isn't it?

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!.......2000-01-14

I admit it...I go straight for the Ann Landers column in the paper before anything else. This book is great to have around because you can enjoy Ann's column anytime you want. All the classics are in here too: Poems, tear-jerkers, and laughs galore. Every kind of ailment and family squabble is commented on. Better than the Springer show. ha ha

I loaned my copy to my retiree parents. They made the book last by reading one printed column a day. I couldn't be that patient. I liked it so much, I couldn't put it down and felt compelled to write notes in the side margins! I've never done THAT before or since buying this book.

I picked up this book at the public library and have tried some of the recipes. The zucchini enchiladas are delicious and the zucchini hot cakes are tasty, too. I plan to purchase this book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding for breakfast and brunch.......1999-04-11

The various coffee cakes and muffins we've tried have become family favorites, particularly recipes such as "Root Beer Muffins", "Maple Muffins with Maple Butter Glaze" (so rich!!!), "Peaches and Cream Muffins" and "Snickerdoodle Coffeecake". And the various custard dishes are wonderful, too.

I have tried many recipes from this book and all of them have been delicious. I take my finished products to my Navajo weaving classes and all the weavers rave about the products! I like the fact that the book has addresses and phone numbers for me to contact the Bed and Breakfasts. Some day, I will have to make a reservation and maybe I can cook with the owner. I also have the book for the Southwest and it too is fantastic! Recipes are simple and delicious.

Wake Up the Smell the Coffee has filled my kitchen with such good food for breakfast and just any meal, that I'm constantly jotting down the recipes on demand. While held over for my flight in Seatle, I picked up this gem in the book/gift store at the airport and spent four hours pouring over every page. The food was just as good as it read on the page and I wanted to visit every B&B. The recipes are the favorites of B&Bs all over the Northwest and each recipe has a brief discription of the Inn and a sketch. The index gives addresses and telephone numbers for quick reservations. I have given this book as a gift many times, and for myself, ordered the successive "Wake Up" books for other parts of our country. May it NEVER go out of print.

      Book Description

      100% pure high octane Bogosian.

      Bogosian's latest and greatest monologue.

"His wit is as venomous as ever, his material even more devastating and polished than before."-New York Daily News

"Bogosian hasn't simply crossed the line of good taste, he has snorted it."-The Daily Texan

Wake Up is Bogosian's meditation on making it to the top of the ladder, on falling off the ladder and on the exhilarating thrill of the ultimate crash and burn. Once again the author offers a blisteringly funny and dead-on take of the chaos and alienation of post-modern life in the U. S. of the year 2000. As Michael Feingold so ably offered in his Village Voice review-"Bogosian is there, watching out for the downtrodden, ridiculing the arrogant rich, defending battered wives and neo-hippie hitchhikers and never losing sight of his own capacity for being classed among the batters and bullies. But his 95 minutes is as fast and exciting a read as the theatre community offers. In our time, the stage has almost been what classical thinkers saw it as, a medium for criticizing life. How perfect that a solo performer should rediscover its roots, by choosing his own life as the object of his criticism."

Eric Bogosian, born in Woburn, Massachusetts, has performed his plays and monologues at venues nationwide. Winner of Obie and Drama Desk Awards, he has made four films of his work, most notably Talk Radio and Suburbia. His novel Mall was recently published by Simon and Schuster.

5 out of 5 stars Bogosian keeps impressing me........2004-10-14

I have been into Eric Bogosian's stuff since Sex Drugs and Rock and Roll. I have never seen him live, but I love reading his stuff. I had a CD of SDARNR...
Anyway, Wake Up And Smell the Coffee is so good I had to give him a shout out here. I was just rereading it for more than the 3rd time now. It still get's me.
If you haven't read any Bogosian try him. I get the feeling he is one of those guys you either love or hate. I tend to love. I only wish he was more prolific. That said, this is another nice addition to his work. I would say he is getting sharper. The bits are a little shorter. They cut to the point real quick though. He writes in a way that sounds like people talk and he doesn't hold back. Bogosian will talk about the same stuff I read about in the papers, and it seems like he is the only one who is saying what people are really thinking.
For example, here is a quote from 'Faith', he's talking about Rwanda and human nature:
'I'll pick up a feumr, keep it on my mante-piece to remind me of human nature.'
Definitely not the Chamber of Commerce, Oprah outlook here.
Keep up the good work Eric!
To sum up, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Bogosian takes me places.......2004-02-25

I've read some of Bogosian's other pieces, including one of his plays, subUrbia, and it seems to me that he's deceptively simple. On the one hand his material seems like one more dirty comedy routine, but then when you put the pieces together the whole world view is pretty complex. It feels like he's dissatisfied with a status quo situation and he's trying to find a way to comment. I have not seen him perform, but I've heard that he's beyond incredible live, so maybe you have to see the monologues live. I've also read his novel, Mall, and it completely spun me out. In some ways, he's probably the most interesting person out there writing today.

      1 out of 5 stars Dissenter #2.......2004-02-18

I'm with the only dissenting reviewer on this site...this guy's sentiments are immature, his writing sophmoric, and his facts just damn hazy! "Displaced Costa Rican farmers"?! Is he kidding?! Just read the essays on coffee and democracy in "Costa Rica: The Last Country the Gods Made" to get the FACTS!

4 out of 5 stars In the great continuum.......2003-06-29

I've read almost all of Bogosian's work and really, this one smells the most personal of all. I've never seen him do his works(except movies...), but when you read it, you can almost see him ranting on. And this time, he's at is clearest. The magic lives on !!!
Really, Bogosian gives meaning to the saying that tells us artists are the Guardians of Humanity.
You can't escape it, the words he gives us speak of truth as you wouldn't want to know. He puts us in front of all you know but don't want to care about.
If you hesitate, don't !!! Get it !!!

4 out of 5 stars Humor is a weapon, and Bogosian is a talented marksman........2003-06-09

Bogosian proves with ýWake Up and Smell the Coffeeý that he is one of the funniest, smartest, and angriest writers around. ýWake Upý is a collection of monologues designed to be performed as a one-man (or one-woman) show, but the monologues could stand on their own as comedic vignettes good enough to work as audition pieces or stand-up routines. Most of the monologues are piercing in their accuracy. Bogosian takes on pop culture, religion, families, and he does so with sarcasm that never lets up and almost never misses the mark. His take on the carnival at airports is just one example: ýStanding in ticket lines, sitting in the departure lounge, crowded around the baggage carousel watching the luggage coming out as if awaiting the birth of your first child.ý

The book is separated into three parts. The main portion of this book is the collection of monologues that form the one-man show. The second part of the book contains what Bogosian calls ýOrphansý ý monologues that donýt really fit in with the rest of the work. The final piece of the book is an essay on how Bogosian develops his monologues (or solos, as he refers to them). He explains how he locks himself in a room with a tape recorder and lets his inner characters loose. The essay is interesting, but you get the feeling that it was added to give some more bulk to the book, and not because it was intended to accompany the monologues.

Bogosian admits in the introduction that after 9/11 he told his agent to shelve the book altogether. Some of the material in ýWake Upý takes on terrorism, plane crashes, the Oklahoma City bombing, and Arabic immigrants, and Bogosian was worried that this book would come across as offensive. In truth, some of pieces do ring with a clarity that might not have existed in the pre-war on terror world. That insight makes the jokes funnier and the truth more bitter. The fact that some of his monologues dealt with subjects that would be forced into the public consciousness after 9/11 just shows how insightful Bogosian has become. Itýs not just jokes anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Delicious.......2000-10-24

This is a great book for people who like wholesome foods but don't necessarily have a lot of time. The ingredients used by most of the recipes are those commonly found in most kitchens and the preparation steps are easy to follow. I have used recipes from most of the different sections of the book and have been pleased with all of them. To me the test of a cookbook is if I try three recipes and they don't turn out then I pass on the book to someone else. With this book I pass on the recipes... The zucchini patties and the chocolate zucchini bread are great . My kids make the apple crisp themselves. The recipes are also easy to modify to your own taste. I have even substituted soy products, low fat alternatives and different flours in some of the recipes with good results. Some of the recipes (overnight french toast) can even be put together the night before and cooked the following morning. I have even called some of the B&Bs to ask about a particular recipe. A great addition to your cookbook library.

My GrandAunt Betty owns and operates a "Used-Book Store" and she came accross this little beauty of a book. She apparently thought that it looked sweet and inspirational(she didn't read the inside). Anyway, she gave it to my cousin Kim(musician/singer) as a present a few months ago for her birthday and sure as the probability of a hangover after drinking tequila all night, my cousin immediately looked for the dose of reality that corresponds with her birthday. It said, "your over thirty and you will probably never be a rockstar!" Needless to say Kim now hates the bastards who wrote the book but she still thinks they're funny.

This Book brings so much laughter to everyone I share it with...cynical, clever and oh so painfully true..there daily "meditations" will have you in stitches!!
