Arthur S. Alberts Collection: More Tribal, Folk and Cafe Music of W. Africa

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
The Arthur S. Alberts Collection: More Tribal, Folk, and Café Music of West Africa is a musical exploration of West Africa from the late 1940s. The compilation features 19 songs culled from an enormous archive by recordist Arthur S. Alberts, a legacy from which we can discern the roots of American jazz, folk, and popular music.

In 1949, recordist Arthur S. Alberts took a six-month, 4,000-mile tour of West Africa in a jeep rigged with high-tech recording equipment. While most recordists of the day tried only to find and capture tribal music untouched by western influences, Alberts was interested in broadly documenting African music of every type. This included popular music found in clubs and cafés, sacred and ritual songs, work songs, and school children’s chants. A companion to and extension of the Field Recordings and Riverside labels’ release Tribal, Folk, and Café Music of West Africa, this anthology, with all its rich and varied styles of singing, percussion, hand-claps and other instruments, highlights the depth and diversity of West African music.

5 out of 5 stars The power of fantastic music........1999-01-04

In 1949, Arthur S. Alberts and his wife drove 4000 miles all around West Africa recording the people's varied music along the way. The original release of these tapes (only about 2% of what was recorded) was hailed as a landmark recording achievement. Nearly 50 years later, the Library of Congress opened their vault for a sequel to that release and it's absolutely breathtaking. You can hear the roots of everything from Jazz to R&B to hiphop embedded deep within these songs. By recording tracks amongst different tribes in Nogeria, Ghana, Zaire and more, he got a varied taste of what music was coming from the land. This ranged from "talking drums" to choral songs to fishing songs to religious chants. Each one has been remastered so exquisitely, you could swear you were right in the middle. The liner notes describing the journey is impeccable. Listening to this draws you in and entrances you to listen to every note made by the native instruments and people. The call and response is so strong, you may actually find yourself singing too. That's the power of fantastic music.
