5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2001-01-28

This is perhaps Banco's most mature effort from their 70's heyday. A more consistent recording than earlier efforts the focus here is on vocals and their collective brilliant sense of melody. Still, the compositions are quite complex and involved. As musicians they are exceptional and most assuredly do not sell themselves short here. Where Io Sono Nato Libero is often heralded as their masterpiece, and it is an outstanding recording, I prefer this one. Highly recommended...Simon.

4 out of 5 stars Last great album from Italian prog gods.......2000-07-19

This album is somewhat of a depature from Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso's first three albums, but still firmly entrenched in the progressive genre. Apparently after this they did some instrumental (soundtrack?) albums, before going in more of a pop direction during the 80's. Banco has always had a distinct ELP influence as far a Vittorio Nocenzi's keyboards, but with a major dash of Italian romanticism, superior compositional skills and infinitely better vocals courtesy of the operatic Francesco Di Giacomo. "Come In Un' Ultimo Cena" retains much of Banco's core sound, but the compositions are shorter and more vocally oriented... more classically influenced and not quite as bombastic. Though not quite as good as previous albums like "Darwin!" or the totally monumental "Io Sono Nato Libero", "Come In Un' Ultimo Cena" is definitely a worthy purchase only after you have the first three. If you enjoy their first three albums, you will enjoy this one, just be aware of a slight departure in sound.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible prog and another great Banco album.......2006-04-03

This 1976 release is excellent, although it shows the band beginning to back off a TINY bit from their ambitious output from 1972-1973. Don't get me wrong though, this is full blown prog and has the overall sound and feel of the Banco compilation album from 1975. The nine tracks on Come in Un'ultima Cena range in length from 1'57" to 7'23" and feature the aspects of Banco's music that makes them my favorite Italian band: virtuosic musicianship, wonderful melodies, odd time signatures, great Hammond organ work, cool synthesizer sounds, and Francesco Di Giacomo's remarkable vocals. This album has all of these properties in abundance. Musicians on this album include the core that made their music so great including Rodolfo Maltese (acoustic/electric guitars, trombone, and French horn); Renato D'Angelo (bass); Vittorio Nocenzi (Hammond organ, synthesizers), Gianni Nocenzi (acoustic piano, synthesizers, electric piano, clarinet, and flute), PierLuigi Calderone (drums); and Francesco di Giacomo (vocals). Although all of the tracks are excellent, my favorites include the amazing pieces "Slogan", "Voila' Mida", and the closing track "Fino alla mia Porta", all three of which are completely over the top prog rockers and feature great playing. Another favorite piece is the classically influenced track "La Notte e' Piena", which just features acoustic instruments and provides a pleasant contrast with the heavier material. With respect to the remastering of the album, it was very well done, and features restored cover art including graphics and lyrics. Unfortunately for this English speaker, the lyrics are in Italian and the informative liner notes are in Japanese. It does not matter though, the music is amazing and the sound quality is excellent. Although this remastered album is expensive, it is worth every penny and is a worthwhile addition to the Banco collection along with their eponymous debut (1972), Darwin! (1972), Io sono nato Libero (1973) and Banco (1975). The follow up to Come in un'ultima cena was also released in 1976 as an instrumental soundtrack and was entitled Garafano Rosso. This album, along with the instrumental album Di Terra (1978) and Canto di Primavera (1979) (Franceso sang on this album) have only received mixed reviews here on AMAZON and elsewhere, although Di Terra is supposedly pretty good. Unfortunately, I have not heard any of them so I can not comment.

4 out of 5 stars This album marks.......2003-02-02

the beginning of their drifting from the distinct style that made Banco so unique and great. It still shows signs of former greatness, they still play well, but the music becomes plain, the composing sophistication and complexity lack totally, it's more like a collection of songs. The album's sleeve design is quite strange -- the right hand of a man in a white suit is being nailed down to a plank with a wooden spike, a singing Di Giacomo (?) is given a sponge, members of the group amongst the apostles in the famous Last Supper -- even taking into consideration the group's leftist phraseology, those images are somewhat pretentious. Though maybe I don't understand something. In any case, it's not their last supper, it's the first sign of the depletion of their creativeness.

First track, A Cena, Per Esempio, shows as much former glory as there can be but is rather an imitation of Banco than the Banco as we know it. E' Cosi' Buono Giovanni is something you would love to hear sitting in a gondola in the middle of Venice. The next one, Slogan, begins with a good King Crimson-style intro, one would expect a good follow-up, but no, don't expect anything, it falls dead on its tracks. Si Dice Che I Delfini features a melodramatic Transilvanian violin, could be an excellent introduction for a Dracula sequel. Even the good jazzy "strumentale" in Fino Alla Mia Porta doesn't save the day. In short, it's still "listenable" but not as enjoyable as their first three albums.

4 out of 5 stars Another fine Banco album.......2002-03-14

Come In Un'Ultima Cena, originally released in 1976 on Manticore, was the first Banco album I have ever heard. I was told they were one of the greatest the Italian scene had to offer, but when I first heard this album, I was wondering what all the hype was about. Certainly the album isn't bad and has some great material. I thought many other Italian prog albums were better than this: Museo Rosenbach's Zarathustra, PFM's Per Un Amico, Goblin's Roller, Cervello's Melos, and Le Orme's Felona e Sorona, for example. Of course I had to try one of their first three albums they released in '72-'73. Once I got a hold of Io Sono Nato Libero, I was so completely amazed and I truly have that as one of my favorites from the Italian prog scene. With Come In Un'Ultima Cena they pretty much tread the same ground as earlier albums but with a more streamlined approach. This might be the more recommended album if you found experiments like "La Città Sottile" and "Canto Nomade Per Un Priogioniero Politico" (both from Io Sono Nato Libero) a little difficult to take in (which I happened to like a lot, by the way). The energy found on previous albums is quite a bit less, but don't let that scare you off if you're a Banco fan. In fact, "Il Ragno" is a classic Banco song very much I like Italian prog to be. "Slogan" attempts to harken back to their earlier days especially with the more experimental passages, but not entirely successful. "È Così Buono Giovanni, Ma..." is a piano-oriented piece with Francesco di Giacomo's usual overdramatic voice. For some reason, I never cared for this song since I thought it was a little weak. "Si Dice Che I Delfini Parlino" is simply amazing, a wonderful mid-tempo piece that demonstrates the best qualities I expect from the Italian prog scene. "La Notte È Piena" is a really trippy piece with flute, violin and a truly wonderful atmosphere. And the album closes with "Fino Alla Mia Porta", which is a truly excellent way to close the album. The problem I have with this album was I found it a bit uneven, that's why I was wondering what the hype was about when this was the only Banco album I had. I found Francesco di Giacomo's voice a little hard to take in on this album as opposed to earlier releases. His voice tended to be more operatic here. By the way, I own the original LP which comes with a gatefold and a lyric booklet. There's an English language version of this album called As In A Last Supper, also released on Manticore. I can't comment how that version is like, whether it's like PFM's Photos of Ghosts, being a pale version, or that version is equally good. Anyway, while Come In Un'Ultima Cena has many of the classic Banco trademark, it isn't what I feel is their best album in the catalog, previous releases are definately better so start with Io Sono Nato Libero, then any of their other previous efforts, before coming here.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2002-02-03

This mid-seventies gem is every bit as good, if not better, than the bands much heralded Io Sono Nato Libero. The sound and songwriting continued to mature with a greater emphasis on melody and less distracting "bizarre" interludes as evidenced on earlier recordings. This outfit is every bit as good as PFM. Strong classical influences coupled with innovative and sophisticated musicianship. Highly recommended...Simon

4 out of 5 stars Loving my "BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO" CD's.......1999-01-31

My first Banco album was the American version by Manticore 1975, bought in the Republic of Panama and I've waited 18 years for the CD's. This is a gorgeous prog-rock Band, even though I don't speak Italian, but never the less always enjoyed the sound of this group. Nocenzi and Di Giacomo perform with a musical craftsmanship typical from the 70's era in a wonderfull way, like early Yes, Genesis and Emerson Lake and Palmer. Their self-titled album "Banco del Mutuo Soccorso" from 1972 I recommend if you like this one. A Banco fan forever. "Io sono nato libero"

5 out of 5 stars The last, but not the least.......1999-01-04

This is the last good LP by Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, one of Italy's best prog-music bands ever. The vocals of Di Giacomo, the heavyweight singer are gorgeous as always, and the band creates a luxurious musical background with classical and eastern echoes (there's enough references to the Gospels in the lyrics to justify this "palestinian" sound). A great concept album, with music which won't make you regret the Gensis or the Yes...
