Amalia Rodrigues is the unchallenged queen of fado--the Portuguese equivalent of flamenco or blues--and one of the greatest singers on record. Her voice is rich and sinuous, with the soulful intensity of a Billie Holiday or Edith Piaf, but a warmth and sense of phrasing all her own. This retrospective ranges from her first recordings in 1952 up to 1970 and gives a superb picture of her work. The instrumentation is simple guitar and Portuguese mandolin, perfectly framing her aching laments and flowing melodies, like a gentler version of flamenco or a continental cousin of Cesaria Evora's morna. The songs include folk and popular material, but the emphasis is on the deep, passionate fado, and it doesn't get any better than this. --Elijah Wald

5 out of 5 stars A lovely overview of the preeminent fadista.......2007-05-07

While I'm no expert on Portuguese fado music, for the last few years I have been buying and listening to CDs from some of the most notable international performers. Many of them, especially Misia, draw inspiration from the late Amália Rodrigues--the most famous and adored singer of fado in the twentieth century. This collection spans several decades of her work, and all the tracks are strong. Priced modestly, the "Art of Amália" is an excellent choice to survey the tremendous skill and passion of this very important singer in the genre. It would make an excellent addition to any fado collection, and it could also make for a nice introduction to fado for fans of world music generally.

5 out of 5 stars amalia.......2006-03-15

What can I say about this magnificent fadista that hasn't already been said. As far as I'm concerned no one can ever even come close to this fantastic artist. She puts so much feelings into every song that I can not help but to get teary eyed.

5 out of 5 stars The voice of the "Iberian Blues".......2005-08-03

Fado is a traditional portuguese music that has many meanings that cannot be found in a dictionary. It deals with fate and "saudade", a feeling best described as a melancholic reminescence of times past, but can also deal with day to day life, its joys and sadnesses. It often is described as the Portuguese answer to Blues, although musically they have very little in common. Amalia was the voice that brought international recognition to this musical style, and what makes her music so special and universally appealing is that her voice transcends the lyrics and stories she sings about. Even if you do not understand portuguese - the sounds of the guitar and "violao" in the background highlighted by her imense range and depth will haunt you into thoughtfulness. Her music is best enjoyed in solitude as it can inspire reflection and introspective. Now, don't let my intelectual musings scare you away - listen and discover it for yourself and find out if you have some "saudade" in you.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality sound.......2005-03-09

The sound quality of this CD is so poor that I can't bear to listen to it. There is a lot of distortion. If I try to listen to the CD using headphones, then the channel separation becomes a problem; I hear one guitar and the singer's voice in one ear, and the other guitar (too loud) in the other ear. If I put the CD in my CD jukebox, then I cringe every time one of the songs on this disc is played, because it is recorded at a really high level, and that, combined with the distortion, hurts my ears.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Fado.......2005-01-28

To listent to Amália Rodrigues is to be hynotized by the sheer parodxical nature of life's eternal beaty and never-ending sadness. Never have I heard such a hauntingly beautiful voice. Her talent is unmatched. You may not understand her language, but the beauty is, you don't have to understand her words to understand her emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Queen she is. Her Best CD.......2005-02-25

You have to have this CD if any of the below is true.

1.You like Fado, the Best Musical Style of Portugal.
2.You already know that Amalia is indeed the Queen of Fado
3.You are aware of first two and now have to know that this is her Best CD.
4.You have absolutely no clue about Fado or Amalia, but are musically adventurous, because on both counts you will be amply rewarded with immeasurable joy.

Basically you have NO CHOICE but to have this particular CD since it will be your best introduction to both Fado and Amalia

Why now I have an urge to mention Cesaria Evora? Because she is another Queen that sings in Portuguese (she is from Cabo Verde)

Even though she is not a representative of Fado, she has her sad and romantic style common with Fado. She is another gem that you have to discover in deep see diving of world music and be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars flat out one of the greatest recorded divas of any genre.......2004-01-14

Amalia's voice is just incredible. Her tone, her expression, her ability to shade pitch ever so slightly to emote. She's just flat out one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. Fans of fado of course know about her, but she ranks with Umm Kulthum, Judy Garland, Maria Callas, and few others who possess a great voice, seemingly limitless talent, and that most elusive of elements, soul. This recording or some such compilation should be in the collection of everyone who loves vocal music.

5 out of 5 stars This voice can do no wrong.......2005-03-05

Amalia still reigns as the Queen of Fado, and this collection provides further evidence of why that is. This compendium includes selections recorded over a number of years, and provides a range of material from pure Fado to folksong. All of it is sung in Amalia's inimitable style. Powerful, emotive, fantastic. It's difficult to describe her voice if you are not familiar with Amalia. I consider her one of the great voices of the 20th century - and this from someone who routinely listens to Tebaldi, Schwartzkopf, and the like.
As an improvement over the 'Art of Amalia 1', this CD credits the musicians performing with her on Portugues guitar, etc. A wonderful selection of Fado that I would highly recommend.

        Album Details

A landmark album in the landmark career of the singer that has come to embody the soul of Portugal, 'Com Que Voz' is justly regarded as Rodrigues' masterpiece. In this 1970 album, she sings some of the finest Portuguese-language poems (Including Camoens) put to music by her longtime musical director Alain Oulman with Fado accompaniment. The result is sheer poetry; sheer magic, considered by some critics as the finest album ever recorded in Portugal. 30 years on, 'Com Que Voz' has no rivals.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amália at her best!.......2002-06-05

Allthough everything she did was simply great and magical, "Com Que Voz" is Amália's best record, rated by critics and public alike as one of the best, if not the best of Portuguese albums of all time. And the reasons are also apparently simple, but unique: the musical arrangements and melodies, the words of the songs, and Amália's unique and unforgettable voice. She chose to sing poems by some of the greatest Portuguese-speaking poets of all time, like David Mourão-Ferreira, Alexandre O'Neil, Ary dos Santos, Manuel Alegre, and the brazilian Cecília Meireles. The music was composed by Amália's "private" composer, who chose only to write music for her voice, Alain Oulman, of French-Portuguese origin, whose melodies allowed for a greater extension and colloratura, adequate to all Amália could give and waiting for her total delivery. From the deep-felt sad poetry of songs like "Naufrágio", "Cuidei que Tinha Morrido", to the lighter and happier tunes of "Maria Lisboa", "Havemos de Ir a Viana", inspired in portuguese folklore, to the bossa-nova inspired "Formiguinha Bossa Nova", and finally to the soulfullness of the great love songs like the ever flying "Gaivota" (Seagull), and "Meu Amor, Meu Amor" (My Love, My Love"), Amália's voice runs the gamut of all emotions, from a light-hearted jolly mood to an austere deeply-felt sincerity, awesomely but beautifully conveyed by her powerful, strong voice and its beautiful colloratura. Listening to Amália is listening to a new world unraveling in one's heart. Simply the best!

5 out of 5 stars Amália at her best!.......2002-06-04

Undoubtadley, all Amalia records are great, but if one wants to listen to her at her best, this is the one CD you'll have to buy. Recorded at the top of her form, in 1969, everything is perfect about this recording: the arrangements, the words, the voice. For it Amália chose to sing some of the best words ever written by portuguese-speaking poets, like David Mourão-Ferreira, Ary dos Santos, Manuel Alegre, and brazilian authors like Cecilia Meireles. The title song, "What With a Voice" in a rough translation, was written presumably by Portugal's national symbol, Camões. The music was composed by Alain Oulman, Amália's renowned composer, who wrotte the kind of suggestive melodies her voice needed, with a larger extension and depth. And then, to crown all this, her voice, with conveys the feelings of those beautiful words, even when you don't speak Portuguese. From the beautiful tones of "Naufrágio" to the happier "Maria Lisboa", going through the forlon tones of "Trova do Vento Que Passa", "Com Que Voz", and the passionate delivery of "Meu Amor, Meu Amor" and the ever-flying love poem "Gaivota"(Seagull), Amália unravels to the listener all the wonders, the mistery and beauty of the best voice in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and passionate.......2001-11-05

I was sitting in an independent movie theater in New York City, waiting for my movie to begin, when I first heard this CD. It moved me so much that I was compelled to ask the theater manager for the name of the singer--it was then that I was introduced to Amalia Rodriguez and the whole Fado movement, of which I knew nothing. I bought the CD about three weeks before the attacks on the World Trade Center, and since then, Amalia's voice has become a pool of comfort that I have plunged myself into over and over again. There is something so passionate and strong, and yet so very vulnerable, about her singing that I believe it would stir even the most stagnant among us. You will not regret owning this music.

        5 out of 5 stars What A Voice!.......2001-03-02

This is It: the penultimate Amalia recording and, apart from (& thanks to!) Amazon.com; one of the most difficult to locate elsewhere. Perhaps it is because it is the one perfect cd. From the opening joy of Naufragio & on to the piece de resistance Com Que Voz thru the jazzy Formiga Bossa Nossa & the heart-opening Meu Amor, Meu Amor (anything more lovely?), this is a perfect full concept, pristine-quality recording with Amalia in Top Form. After this treasure, try Amalia rodrigues 7 926712, a hauntingly beautiful cd opening with Asas Fechadas (& a rare piano joining guitarra & viola). As wonderful and abundant (thanks to EMI reissues in 2000 & 2001) as these recordings are, Com Que Voz is the crown jewel!

        5 out of 5 stars AMÁLIA'S BEST RECORD.......2000-11-18

This is the best album of Amália Rodrigues! Even Amália herself says so. It's considered by critic's as the "Sr. Pepper" of Amália's recording collection. Recorder in 1970, this album includes some of Amália's best performances. The music is by Alain Oulman, Amália's exclusive composer since 1962 and the guitarists are Fontes Rocha and Pedro Leal, two of the best. For anyone seriously into fado music or Amália Rodrigues music - this album is the top. An essencial masterpicee. (note: it's a concept album! Try to listen to it all at once without interuptions. You'll see how great it is...)
