wonderful cd.......2005-06-01
Two brilliant seventies albums.......2005-02-21
The big country hits here were The grand tour (in which George sings about the memories of Tammy to be found in his house, though he doesn't mention Tammy by name) and Her name is (an amusing song about a secret relationship). Among the many other great songs here are covers of Pass me by (first recorded by Johnny Rodriguez but since covered by several other top country singers), Borrowed angel (Mel Street) and Once you've had the best (Johnny Paycheck).
There are many other excellent tracks here. If you enjoy George's music, you'll love this twofer.
A Double Shot Of Jones, No Chaser..........2004-12-30
First we have THE GRAND TOUR, which includes the hit title track which went to number one on the country charts. Co-written by Tammy's future husband George Richey, the song features George pulling out all the stops with his classic vocal delivery. "Once You've Had The Best," written by George's buddy Johnny Paycheck, was also a hit, revealing the singer's tender side and remains a live favorite today. Other highlights include "Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through)," "Who Will I Be Loving Now," and "Borrowed Angel," a tune written by Mel Street. Of special interest is "Our Private Life," a song credited to Jones and Wynette, where the President and the First Lady seem to be taking aim at the media gossip that hovered around the daily soap opera that was their married life at the time.
By 1976 Jones and Wynette had divorced and ALONE AGAIN marks the beginning of George's long free-fall to the bottom, although his singing remained stellar. The opening track, "A Drunk Can't Be A Man," was written by George and his friend Earl "Peanut" Montgomery and is a cold heart-felt hard slab of country soul. The novelty hit "Her Name Is" is a veiled nod to Tammy, as could be "Right Now I'd Come Back And Melt In Her Arms" (Jones admits in his autobiography that he didn't give a damn about exploiting his personal life to sell a few records). Another great cut is "Stand On My Own Two Knees," a song about picking up the pieces and moving on, something he knew all about at the time.
THE GRAND TOUR and ALONE AGAIN both feature some filler material (such as "The Weatherman" and "Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me") but, as is always the case with this man, they also feature songs that will alter your conception of what a singer is capable of. It's a shame that all of Jones' albums with Epic from the seventies are not reissued, but this is a good start.

An acoustic treasure chest!!!.......2006-11-24
Do not let the fact that Jimmy sings in falsetto keep you from giving this amazing singer a listen. He is one of the greatest vocalist of our lifetime, with a strong dynamic range. (No I do not know him and I am not related to him.) I am just a huge fan of his vocal styling, who loves the fact his music has matured as he has, without losing a single bit of his vocal strength.

A More Mature HMS.......2006-03-02
Does it work? If you're not expecting the band's classic sound, then yes. Lemon Tongue is a very enjoyable album, and some of the songs here are simply beautiful. They may even be comparable to latter-day Marillion in terms of beauty and emotion.
That being said, I think the band should have stuck a little closer to their classic sound. Lemon Tongue is more mature than Racing after Midnight, but it's also less fun to listen to. At times I forgot I was listening to a rock album at all. Even Amazon labels the band an "alternative rock" act. I'm not necessarily looking for the Big Prize Part II, but an approach that combines the best of the band's older and newer sounds (like what Harem Scarem is doing these days) would work better.
Ultimately, Lemon Tongue is worth checking out, as long as you can leave your expectations at the door. It's not going to make everyone happy, but I think it may pleasantly surprise people.

Album Description
Import only two-disc coupling of his 1981 album 'If I Should Love Again' and his '96 album, Summer of '78. The latter is out-of-print in the US. Barry Manilow decided to follow the success of singing with the big bands with an album saluting another great lost era, The Summer of '78. Even on the newly-written title song, it's never quite clear why Manilow chose to single out the summer of 1978 out of the entire decade after all, the album is comprised of songs written throughout the '70s but the exact reason doesn't matter: as much as its predecessor, this is an exercise in nostalgia, pure and simple. Of course, it's very entertaining nostalgia, as Manilow has chosen soft-rock songs (Dan Hill's 'Sometimes When We Touch', Leo Sayer's 'When I Need You', Bob Seger's 'We've Got Tonight' that perfectly suit his style. The Summer of '78 is a perfectly executed and entertaining slice of nostalgia. BMG. 2006.Album Details

Barry's Beautiful Musik!.......2007-06-24
SUMMER OF '78
Well, this recent aquisition is my 41st Manilow CD (a hair less if you count them by actual albums, since some albums have more than one CD). This is a 12-track collection of absolutely beautiful songs that Barry is not famous for. God, I LOVE his music!
This CD is all beautiful songs. They just make you wanna melt! They are songs from the '70s that Barry did an album of in 1996. Why "The Summer of '78"? I donno--must have been a special time for Mr. B. I think everybody remembers "Reminiscing," "Sometimes When We Touch," "Never My Love," "I Go Crazy," and "Just Remember I Love You". "I Go Crazy" and "Sometimes When We Touch" are just so very beautifully crafted by Barry. I guess they are my favorites on this CD, but I love them all.
"I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" is done differently than I'm used to. I have several club mix versions of this song, and as much as I love them, I love this version without the pizzaz too. Oh, you'll recognize "The Air That I Breathe" too. I recognize "Interlude: Love's Theme" from some TV show of the '70s but cannot remember which one. You know, dah, dah dah...dah, dah dah. Anyway, you'll recognize it when you hear it. Other songs include "Summer of '78" and "When I Need You," "Bluer Than Blue," and "We've Got Tonight".
Geeze. This is just one beautifully romantic drop-dead gorgeous album. Sorry it took me 11 years to discover it. Don't let it happen to you. Let the Manilonian in you come out and feel the love in this album. It's incredible! Took me just about 2 or 3 plays for this to become by favorite Manilow album. It moved the blue background "Barry Manilow" album you see in my reviews to my second favorite. I cannot stop playing "Summer of '78" -- NOR DO I WANT TO!!!
IF I SHOULD LOVE AGAIN
Beautiful album! Great songs! 11 in all, at a total time a hair over 40 minutes. Some songs I had not heard before. Some I've only heard a few times.
"The Old Songs" and "Somewhere Down the Road" are Manilownian staples and beautiful songs. "Let's Hang On" is one of my favorites. It rocks and I'm really glad Barry recorded it. "If I Should Love Again" is another absolutely BEAUTIFUL song and appears on many Barry CDs. The piano bridge on this song is just awesome, in my opinion, and is crescendos so beautifully. These songs are all great; they are all the standard Manilow arrangements.
The less-frequently heard songs follow. "Don't Fall in Love With Me" has a nice little easy-listening cha-cha beat. (Don't fall in love with me. I'll only break your heart. For us, forever is just tomorrow. . .) "Break Down the Door" rocks. It has a nice driving beat. "No Other Love" has a very pretty melody with lots of feeling in the words (There was no other love but you--where did our love go--type song).
"Fools Get Lucky" is a slow song. (In other words, I am a fool, but got lucky anyway because I found you). "I Haven't Changed the Room" is also a pretty slow song. "Let's Take All Night (to say Goodbye)"--That says it all, a slow song--Let's take all night to say goodbye, `cause goodbye is hard to say. (H-m-m-m-m. After you spend all night saying goodbye, maybe you won't need to say goodbye, or want to. Heck, no. I'm stayin' now--But what do I know?). Pretty song, anyway. "You're Runnin" Too Hard" kind of a "bop" (You're partying too hard--slow down before you crash)
Great albums, especially if you want some of these less-heard songs. On a scale of 1 - 5, I would certainly give them at least a 5 or better, matter of fact, I'd probably give "Summer of `78" a 25! This collection is worth every penny.

Glad All Over Again [IMPORT]
The Dave Clark Five Manufacturer: EMI ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:

Customer Reviews:
The Great, Forgotten 60's Invasion Band.......2005-12-10
Glad All Over featured the standard DC5 formula. Up tempo rocker driven by snare drum rim shots from Dave Clark, thumping bass from Rick Huxley, up front saxaphone from Denny Payton, and the great, rough voiced Mike Smith on organ. Lenny Davidson's guitar was usually barely heard. Smith had a big, huge growling voice and was the featured singer on virtually all the DC5 songs.
The DC5 didn't mess around. Their style had almost no subtelty. Just fast rockers played loud. The DC5 had very few ballads, even on their albums. Their follow-up hit, "Bits and Pieces", was a powerful, full-throttle song fueled by those Smith growls and Dave Clark's rim shot heroics. No finesse. Just loud, fast music. It was great!
The DC5 had a lot of hits in the US, were on Ed Sullivan a lot, and toured the States a lot. I saw them in Columbus, Ohio, and they rocked the house with hit after hit. Today, they are almost forgotten. Part of the problem is that Dave Clark guards the music closely, letting compilations out only occasionally.
Anyway, get this album. The DC5 kicked butt in a very 60's fashion.
High-energy sixties music.......2005-10-01
Because of their extensive touring schedule, the Dave Clark Five were more successful in America, where their many hits included fourteen consecutive top ten hits, than in their homeland, where their career total of twenty-two hits included just eight top ten hits -good by most standards, but it could have been better.
In Britain, the Dave Clark Five began their run of hits with Do you love me, a cover of an early Motown song. Despite the song having already been an American hit (for the Contours), this was a huge American hit. By contrast, it was only a minor British hit, losing out to a rival version by Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, who took it to number one.
Next came the two songs for which the group is best remembered in Britain - the UK number one hit, Glad all over (it has since been adopted as an anthem by a football club) and the UK number two hit, Bits and pieces. These two monster hits were followed by Can't you see that she's mine, which also made the British top ten. After that, most of their British hits failed even to make the top twenty, but as their British popularity faded, their American popularity gained momentum.
Among their other songs, two completely different hits share the same title (Everybody knows), one of them providing the group with their second and last British number two hit. It is fairly common for different songs to share a title (and not that rare for artists to record different songs with the same title) but I can't think of another act that has charted with two such songs. Catch us if you can (its American title is Having a wild weekend), Red balloon, Good old rock'n'roll (a medley of covers) and Everybody get together complete their list of British top ten hits. Only one other record, Come home, made the British top twenty. Over and over, a very minor UK hit, made number one in America.
This compilation includes all the tracks I've mentioned and most but not all of their other hits. Dave owns all the group's recordings and only occasionally leases them to record companies for limited periods. This means that the music is very hard to obtain most of the time, so if you get a chance to buy, make sure you take advantage.
