Organist Jimmy Smith's Blue Note and Verve back-catalog is the stuff of legend, and the man plays as well on Dot Com Blues as he ever has. But this session is more than another Jimmy Smith album. At times you wonder where Jimmy is among all the accompanying star power, but if you listen, he is still there, rubbing the honeyed keys as B.B. King, Etta James, Dr. John, and Keb Mo wail and work it. Smith shows he is still the master of the blueswalk in "8 Counts for Rita," "C.C. Rider," "Tuition Blues," and the title track, as well as on a sumptuously slow version of "Mood Indigo." Here, Smith solos with gritty abandon in a small-group setting with such notables as guitarist Russell Malone, drummer Harvey Mason, and percussionist Lenny Castro. Smith is more often felt than heard elsewhere, though, and maybe that is understandable when Etta James lets rips on a wobbly version of "I Just Wanna Make Love to You." The opening "Only in It for the Money" is better balanced, perhaps because Dr. John understands the value of less-is-more and, as a fellow keyboardist, doesn't want to step on Smith's celebrated toes. Finally, B.B. King helps make "Three O'Clock Blues" a rocking blowout that transports the listener back to some rock & blues tent meeting circa 1956. Dot Com Blues proves that Jimmy Smith can still raise the rug and do what he does best, star power in attendance or not. --Ken Micallef
Customer Reviews:
The Defining Album of Smith's Verve Years.......2007-06-11
When you go to the Detroit/Montreax Jazz Festival and ALREADY hear covers of this album's title track, as WELL AS 8 Counts for Rita, you know Jimmy struck up something he didn't intend- a legendary album. Just rolling it out as usual, the Home Cooker rocked out an album that, only three-quarters of a decade later, is being used as a signature for Jimmy Smith.
In good company, Smith doesn't hog the mic. He is merely the instigator of even more cool licks. 8 Counts and Dot Com Blues are surely going to be (and most likely already are) blues standards.
It appears Smith is the master of blues, although his bebop is still to be reckoned with. It is almost like this album was waiting in time for Jimmy Smith to catch up to it, because no one else could have handled it quite like him. In short time, this album will be sitting alongside "The Sermon", "Organ Grinder Swing" and most of the others as Jimmy Smith's tickets to redemption into Heaven.
The Master: His best work ever.......2005-08-02
This album is among the best work Jimmy Smith has ever done. It was recorded in 2000, hence the title. In much of his earlier work, producers stuck him with big bands. Somewhat understandable as Smith produced some classic hits: "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue," for example. But too often the result was too loud, too brassy and just got in the way. Or Smith was paired with the great guitarist Wes Montgomery, whose sound (in this man's opinion) was way too relaxed for the likes of Jimmy Smith. Here he is in the perfect milieu, backed by a small studio group that can PLAY. They also get out of his way and allow him to soar. On some tracks guest artists are brought in. The best stuff is just Smith and his sidemen. I mean, they do cook. "8 Counts for Rita," "Strut," "Dot Com Blues," and especially "Mr. Johnson" are just pure. Jimmy Smith ranks with the greatest jazz artists of all time, a man who fashioned a sound and style as distinctive as Miles Davis on trumpet, Gerry Mulligan on barry sax, Ray Charles as a vocalist. The word "genius" is sometimes used too loosely. It fits this man like a glove.
Not to mention Taj .......2004-08-17
The cut I heard on the radio featured a fantastic vocal performance by Taj Mahal. So goood in blue - wanting to hear an entire album of these guys together.
Jazz? Blues? It Just Works!.......2003-12-26
I saw Jimmy Smith at his Jazz Supper Club in the mid-70s. This brought back many memories. But he still carries his own sound. Highly recommended. I've got to admit, with two kids in college, I was spurred to buy it by the last title - Tuition Blues. If you don't own any Jimmy Smith, this is a good place to start.
I didn't understand.......2002-11-14
I couldn't understand what that guy from San Jose wrote. He says he's a Jimmy Smith's fan, Ok. But he complains that it is a jazz album and not a blues album when Jimmy Smith is, and has always been, a great jazz musician. He complains as if, by the title you should identify the contents of the CD. Lot's of jazz CDs have "blues" in their name...

Customer Reviews:
Great addition to the 1st treasures .......2006-12-16
This is a great addition to the 1st Treasures and none of the songs repeat, which I thought was great. It rates up there with their other Christmas CD, it gives a wonderful variety of all my favorite Christmas tunes.
Christmas Treasures II .......2006-12-16
All of the songs here are nicely arranged and full bodied, but... Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - Now, who isn't familiar with this song? But I promise that you have never heard it sound like this. It begins with a real techno-funk sound; you don't recognize the song to begin with. About 15-20 seconds into it you will recognize it. The tempo to this one is not fast, or not as fast as we are used to hearing Rudolph. But an enjoyable song because of it's totally different sound here.
Jingle Bells - OK, what album is complete without one of the old standbys? But this is like no other Jingle Bells you have ever heard. I don't know the instrument that begins, maybe it is a keyboard, or the harpsichord, but you don't really recognize the tune to begin with because it is played in an atypical key. I can say that this is my favorite song on this album, it is a piece of work due to the arrangement of tempo and instruments. I love the tinkling bells in this one. A real toe tapper that everyone will enjoy !
Wonderful Music For All Ages .......2006-12-16
I found this CD to be a really nice collection of Christmas music. It is just as nice as their other Christmas CD that I have purchased. I hope that they will make another one next year.
Christmas Without MEDHI Isn't Christmas At All.......2006-12-16
At Christmas time in my home, Medhi rules the sound system. I own all of his CD's, and I have been unable to choose a favorite. His unique blend of classical, rock and new age sound results in a truly magical experience that you have to hear to believe. Each album contains something for everyone, whether it be relaxing mood music, or a jazzed up version of "We 3 Kings." He includes many melodies with Renaissance touches, and the kids especially like his version of Rudolph , as you can actually "hear" Santa's sleigh fly from one end of the house to the other! This collection is a must for every home.
I got them both and I love it........2006-12-16
It is a bit different than other Christmas CDs. He mixes old with new world to create an orginal sound while mantaining the spirtual quality of the music Love it!

Album Description
Spanish Soul is a complete guitar oriented album. It uses live percussion and hip hop style drum loops to create a new effect in acoustic Spanish guitar music. The musical styles on this album are as varied as the musicians featured. Spanish Soul has a definite Spanish flavor, but it also includes jazz stylings such as Sweet Samba & Anniversary Song, Middle Eastern melodies such as Aya Sofia & Mediterranean Nights and Rhythm and Blues tunes such as Little Buddha. In addition there are quite a few tunes that will fit the in between categories. The 1st Track Malaguea is a fresh new dance version of the original Spanish Malaguea. The Title Track Spanish Soul is a romantic Ballad with the warm sounds of the Flugel Horn. El Camino Real combines the Rumba Flamenca rhythms with a Samba rhythm track while Serenade is a pure Guitar Jazz ballad that features a duet of the Spanish nylon string guitar and the warm sounds of a Gibson ES-175. The remix of Today & Tomorrow now starts as a Blues Ballad that develops into a Spanish/Jazz style. Then there are songs such as Shiraz, that would fall more into the "raw energy" middle eastern sounds category, while East of Spain features the mystic sounds of an English Horn. Last but not least there is the mellow Guitar Ballad Days Gone By and the hip hop/Spanish style composition Song for Nima that defies any category.

Awesome.......2000-05-28
I had never heard of this musician but ran across him on mp3. I was looking for mombo music and stumbled across this gem. I fell in love with this exotic sound. Too bad I can only twirl around the living room and pretend. But the music is a fantasy brought to life in the hands of an extradordinary musician! Thank you Stefan!
Great Guitar Music.......1999-07-29
Stefan was good when he was with La Vienta, but now he is even better. The tracks on this album are an incredible fusion of Jazz & Flamenco. Want to hear a true samba, check out sweet samba. This CD is a must!

CS: Chromatic Sizzle.......2007-07-11
Carl Saunders did not pioneer soloing from a lead trumpet point of view: Marvin Stamm, Doc, Maynard, Shew: so many have pulled it off that it's not surprising to hear it anymore. Many lead charts written for bands now have chord progressions right there in the 1st chair a la Gordon Goodwin. But when a set of jazz chops like Carl's meets lead chops like Carl's, well, you have me stumped for words. "Spectacular" doesn't quite cut it; he doesn't blow the house down. "Out of sight" isn't right either; Carl stays pretty much within the boundaries of the chords. It's really what he does with all those 12 notes.
"Intelligent, technically confident and preternaturally clever with a Mariah Carey range that only quits once he leaves the building, and even then I'd bet he pops high 'A's' in his sleep." I'll leave it at that. Why more folks don't have this guy on the top of their CD pile is nuts. Listen and learn. The Arban Cowboy, indeed!
Gotta get this one.......2007-01-19
Endearingly known to his friends as the Arban Cowboy, Carl is the greatest! I have all his CD's and look for him on other artists' recordings as well. He's ALWAYS the one to check out. Not to be overlooked - ever.
Long overdue.......2005-02-15
Trumpeter Carl Saunders has been a first-call player for West Coast big bands for many years, but he only started to record as a leader in the mid-1990s. This disc is his first crack at leading his own big band, & it is, as you'd expect, a superb disc. Saunders has stunning chops & imagination on the horn--he likes wide intervals & can hit high notes with a nice tone & pitch (rather than making them sound like sirens going off). But he's not a prima donna: in fact, the album is largely a tribute to the work of the late arranger/composer/trumpeter Herb Phillips: the album includes six of his charts, including the knockout opener "Compilation" (a brisk "I Got Rhythm" variant) and the lovely "An Apple for Christa" (a tribute to the ill-fated teacher/astronaut Christa McAuliffe). The rest of the charts are shared out among various hands--Ivan Lins, Bill Rogers, Jackson Stock, John Boice, Mike Barone--& they all sound excellent: always warm rather than blaring, & never settling for slick riffing or excessive cleverness (though perhaps the multiple key-changes on "I'm All for You" are pushing it...). Saunders doesn't hog the limelight--in fact, on a few tunes he doesn't solo at all (Johnny Mandel's "Emily" is a trombone feature for Andy Martin, for instance). Pianist Christian Jacob sounds especially strong on his two features; my only quibble would be that the usually reliable alto saxophonist Lanny Morgan seems rather one-dimensional here, relying on the same formulaic Bird lick over & over again. But otherwise this is a very fine disc, recommended to fans of mainstream big-band music or to anyone looking for some first-rate trumpet.
"SIZZLER" !!!.......2005-01-06
Carl Saunders has gathered together the leading West Coast musicians and arrangers and recording technicians...AT THE PEAK OF THEIR POWERS...and created what will surely be a landmark "Big Band" recording. If you like flawless musicianship, this one's for you!
Wow!.......2002-11-02
If you are a jazz fan, if you appreciate the sound of a band comprised of some of the west coast's best players, if well-crafted, swinging arrangements are your cup of tea, if you are a trumpet player and want to feel totally inadequate, then you must get this CD! It is big band jazz as good as any you can hear. And the virtuousity of Carl Saunders is extraordinary! He possesses a beautiful sound, a very personal creative style, remarkable technical facility and a range that almost defies description! He can play lead, he solos imaginatively and I wouldn't be surprised if he can leap tall buildings in a single bound! The band members are the who's-who of west coast artists and they play like they play together all the time....which, of course, they do....in various settings. My highest personal recommendation on this recording!!

SOUND OF LIGHT-STEVEN CRAVIS.......2007-05-13
Delightful melodies, charming and catchy. You'll be humming them over and over again in your head. This album makes me smile. It is childlike in its simplicity yet clever twists and turns keep your from being bored. The listener feels like they are gently gliding in the air over hills and dales as the melodies rise and fall. As a pianist, his technique is good but rather straight forward - could feel more sensitive but a wonderful addition to any instrumental collection. Highly recommend!
Beautiful Solo Piano Album.......2004-10-26
Steven Cravis's "Sound of Light" is a sonic delight in which he interprets beautiful colors and shades of light as music in sparkling brilliance for the pleasure of our ears and the exuberance of our spirit. Splashes of "color" resonate on the first track of the album "Through the Kaleidoscope" setting the scene for the broad spectrum of shades and shadows on the rest of this collection of pieces. Each one evokes a distinct mood, some grey and moody like the third track "Dancing Spirits" and some soft as romantic candlelight such as my favorite track on the album, "The Shining Star". "Radiant Love" shines with the warmth of a heart filled with true devotion and opens into an interesting bridge that sounds almost classical. "Snowfall Sunrise" shines with the hope of a fresh new day washed in the crystal pure reflections of white snow. I highly recommend this album. (By Laura Sullivan, Recording Artist)
