5 out of 5 stars Carnival of the Animals.......2007-01-10

The music is beautiful. I used it for a music lesson for Kindergarten on how to interpret animals using music. It is also very soothing in the background for working.

3 out of 5 stars Carnival..........2005-07-26

I found this disk to be "adequate." Other than The Swan, nothing really moved me. The swan rates five stars, the rest, four! You might like it more than I did...

5 out of 5 stars This is a Carnival of Fun.......2005-06-29

I had been a fan of this recording when it was first released. While looking for the recording for my daughter, I fell upon this release.
Sensational! Who can't love the Romantics?

5 out of 5 stars Musical Playfulness at it's finest.......2005-02-20

This CD is absolutely charming. The Carnival of the Animals is so full of different expressions- the majestic lion, the agonizingly slow tortoise, the free-flying birds, the dancing fossils, and the regal swan. Phaeton is amazing, as is le Rouet d'Omphale and the Danse Macabre. I wasn't into Saint-Saens before this CD, but now I'm hooked. For model romantic era music, buy this CD without delay :)

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2002-01-31

It's humourous, it's simple, it's great. Those three words best describe Carnvial of Animals. From the lovely and beautiful Aquarium and Aviary to the more serious, respectable March of the Royal Lion, this musical composistion goes everywhere and does everything in great strides. A must-have for any classical music fan

3 out of 5 stars They played it safe........2007-07-10

If you like gothic/symphonic metal like I do, you're probably wondering if Lacuna Coil's Karmacode is an album worth checking out. Out of all the albums Lacuna Coil has released, Karmacode is my least favorite. The combination of guitar lines, keyboard work, and contrasting dual female/male vocals help create their melodic sound. The thing I like best about Lacuna Coil is that they always seem to create music that goes perfectly with Scabbia's voice. However, in this album they keep the same beat and rhythmic patterns time after time which makes the album really boring. It would seem they have abandoned their old music style to satisfy the likings of a more mainstream audience even though they are pretty well known. I'm not very happy with this album due to this sort of "selling out". I wouldn't recommend this album to new fans of this band. If they liked the newer stuff more, it's not a good thing because they will be missing out on timeless classics from the band.

Even though most of the songs were very repetitious I really liked "To The Edge." "Life is so short/Close to the edge of another backdoor/Life is so sure/Life will be ready to twist up your world" makes me think about how life has its twists and turns opening new doors for us. If you want to check out Lacuna Coil's best work, listen to Comalies.

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia!.......2007-07-04

Italians have always been known for their gift to romance the senses. Lacuna Coil is no exception. In fact, they are the 'masters of passion' - hypnotizing you with their sizzling bass and guitar lines, intriguing drum rolls, and fusion of male and female vocals. From the first listen, you can feel that this group of 6 are special to the music scene. They are not overly dramatic, yet they leave a mark on you. They do not scream and clamor, yet their voices are heard.

"La Famiglia" (the family) is what they call all who enter their world, and it is a most accurate assessment not only of how they relate to their followers, but how they treat each other. I have been to their shows all over the world, and each time I am there, I feel like I am being held in an embrace of sorts. Their music is warm, inviting, and exciting. And if you were fortunate enough to see them on either the Jaegermeister Tour or the Hottest Chicks in Metal Tour, you know what I am talking about.

They are the 'touchable' band - the band that comes out before and after the show, and showers you with hugs, kisses, and reminds you of how happy they are to see you again. Hence, "La Famiglia".

Their newest release, Karmacode, is a journey into spiritual curiousity, self-introspection, and philosophical wonder. Each track on the album introduces you to another facet of their lives. Their lyrics based upon their experiences are not unique and are highly applicable to us all.

Not too hard, not too soft, just right. Good for driving, for making love, for reading, for exercising. Their lyrics are clean. And true to form, they have included a song in Italian (which are always my favorites). Even though listeners may not understand the Italian lyrics, the sheer beauty of the language to music is worth listening to.

Their take on "Enjoy the Silence" is refreshing and light, but still maintains the darm and ethereal integrity of the original release by Depeche Mode.

Well worth a listen!

Amazon.com essential recording

Aficionados are familiar with Puccini's Il Trittico or "Triptych," his three one-act operas that premiered at New York's Metropolitan in 1918; everyday opera lovers should know them as well. Here is Puccini at his most imaginative: Il Tabarro, a shocker about the jealousy of an older man towards his deceitful younger wife on a houseboat on the Seine is dark and foreboding, and is, incidentally, probably his greatest, tightest opera. It is given a superb performance here, with Maria Guleghina and the wonderful Neil Shicoff (the true, underrecorded fourth tenor) as the faithless duo and Carlo Guelfi as the pitiable but murdering husband. Suor Angelica is set in a convent (yes, only women's voices). Until the goings turn tragic--the eponymous heroine is told by her cruel aunt that the child she had out of wedlock and gave up has died--the scoring is light, airy, and pure. Cristina Gallardo-Domas and Bernadette Manca di Nissa as the nun and her aunt, respectively, may not have the vocal glamour or depth of some of their predecessors on CD (Renata Scotto or Christa Ludwig), but their beautiful, meaningful singing carries the show. Gianni Schicchi's soundstage (the bedroom of a recently dead rich man in Florence in 1299, peopled by his greedy relatives) is rambunctious for the composer's only foray into comedy--based on a passage from Dante--and this set comes up roses. It's the best one on records. Jose Van Dam actually is funny and Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna (who also offer a cameo in Tabarro) are super as the young lovers; Gheorghiu's singing of the opera's hit, "O mio babbino caro," is glorious. This set is highly recommended. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bravo.......2007-06-11

Very good performances of all three one-acts. Good sound quality, and the orchestra performance is top-notch.

5 out of 5 stars The best Suor Angelica is in Pappano's Trittico.......2005-08-26

This review compares three of the recordings of Suor Angelica, with the finding that the recording of this miniature gem in the boxed set of Puccini's Il Trittico conducted by Antonio Pappano far exceeds the others in various qualities.

The best first. The vocal performances of both the title role (Cristina Gallardo-Domas) and la Zia Principessa (Bernadette Manca di Nissa) offer a great breadth of interpretation and an honest and true attention to pure vocal production. I have the very slightest of quibbles with one specific response from Gallardo-Domas' Angelica to her aunt, "La Vergine ci ascolta e Lei vi giudica!" is offered much too anglrily, where the score is marked "coldly." The wonderful choral work that supports the action and provides so much of the exposition is a well-modulated performance of Puccini's best writing for women's voices in non-starring roles. Indeed, the balance between the soloists, chorus, and orchestra is keenly maintained througout, ever allowing the orchestra and chorus to be equals to the soloists. Lastly, Pappano's pacing seems the most accomplished of all the recordings.

The worst second. The performance of the Rome Opera Orchestra & Chorus with Fedora Barbieri and Victoria de Los Angeles is frightful. The balance is muddy, and the soloists are miked so closely that they become strident. Worse yet is that the editing was inattentive, and several badly pitched tones made their way to the final recording. --And the pitch problems continue throughout, sometimes sharp, sometimes flat. The chorus members' diction is almost slurred, and a sloppy ensemble results in many nice melodies being unintelligible.

The most surprising recording is conducted by Richard Bonynge and stars Joan Sutherland and Christ Ludwig. As another reviewer noted, Dame Sutherland is past her prime, recording the role at age 52. If only we had a recording of Angelica from her at 30! As it is, I believe Richard Bonynge is the one driving a stake through the heart of this work. His readings alternate between a rush through lyric passages and tearing through the recitativo segments at a full tilt. But it seems so strange because the balance favors the women's voices, making the orchestra extraordinarily subservient. Finally, the performances in general seem less than committed. For example, Sutherland lacks both the fire and the meek submissiveness that should complicate the character.

5 out of 5 stars Just maybe the greatest recorded "Trittico" ever.......2003-10-09

Like another previous reviewer, I too came to this set feeling that the old Tito Gobbi recording was something very special, and hard to beat. And it still has a special place in my collection. But this set is exceptional on all counts; it is superbly recorded, the soloists are wonderful, and Pappano's pacing throughout is just glorious...here is a conductor who understands, and has a love for this music. Furthermore, the older Gobbi set is hard to find, and only "Schicchi" is in true stereo. In short, you will not go wrong with these lovely, sensitive recordings. Better yet, get these and the older set if you can find it, and you'll never want for any more.

5 out of 5 stars Life--It hits you hard.......2002-06-16

Once upon a time I was traversing an Interstate Highway on an otherwise uneventful day and Bamm! the sweet intonations of the female soloist singing in the most heavenly voice (by the way not THIS reviewed rendition), was being delivered by the most crappy Amplitude Modulated car radio. I was so mesmorized by the sweet sounds I was hearing that I pulled off the Interstate and just listened. For an hour I just listened. The Opera was 'Suor Angelica'.

I have this particular CD and it is recorded better than the version I had experienced. Yet the rendition I had experienced set me on the path of discovery.

Music is like that.

5 out of 5 stars Long overdue..........2002-05-21

A modern recording of Il Trittico was long overdue, and has been fulfilled magnificently by Alagna, Georghiu, Pappano et al. The only negative reviewer of this disc really criticizes the composer (who he thinks is Verdi!) rather than the performances themselves. But, the question for a review is not "is this a good opera?" That is for the purchaser. Rather, the issue is, given that the purchaser wishes to purcahse a recording of the opera, is it a good recording. This is an excellent one and anyone interested should not hesitate.

One of the great fado singers working today, Cristina Branco returns with Ulisses, a lush-sounding album that now more than ever separates her from fado convention. Rather than the typical guitar trio backing, Branco adds piano throughout to a guitar quartet that is, as always, led by Portuguese guitar player Custodio Castelo. Between Castelo's pyrotechnics and the piano adding a richer harmonic element, the elegant music sounds more appropriate for classical music recital halls than the fado clubs. Branco's voice smolders with nuance throughout, soaring but never overpowering the backing. A reference to the title, the material here sometimes comes from poems and tunes far beyond her homeland--Branco even offers English speakers a not-at-all-stiff version of Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of You." The electronic-oriented "Fundos" ends the album on an odd note but serves as an emphatic reminder that Cristina Branco is not content to sail exclusively in traditional Portuguese waters. -- Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best cd of Cristina.......2007-06-29

For me this is the best cd of Cristina Branco for many reasons, is not only fado, She sings like an angel in this cd, I like to hear Cristina cantar in spanish Alfonsina y el mar.
Sete pedaços de vento è the best song of fado I ever listen in my life

5 out of 5 stars A special disc, pure enjoyment.......2006-09-25

Having a couple of other recordings by this fabulous fado artist compelled me to get this copy of ULISSES. By far, the most enjoyable and well done disc thus far (at least in my collection) of Cristina Branco.

This disc, above all others, clearly displays that she is a world class vocalist in any genre and language. Selections in her native tongue along with an unexpected Joni Mitchell as well as French lyrics puts this artist in the spotlight and center stage. The musical arrangements and recording quality adds to the enjoyment of this disc.

This is a must have for any Fado enthusiast and Cristina Branco fan.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful example of excellent world music.......2006-09-10

Cristina Branco is one my favourite singers in Portugal. Her beautiful sweet voice soothes my soul. Unfortunately she's not very well known in her own country. I know what I'm saying cause I'm portuguese and live in Portugal.
This new CD "Ulisses" is awesome, her best to date in my opinion. Comparing to previous Cristina's CDs this one is really a voyage (as the title suggests) including a wider range of musical styles, obviously influenced by other cultures, but always capturing the emotion and vision within a genuine fado singer. Obviously this CD is not for purists, and I'm glad I'not a purist. I'm particularly fond of the tune "Alfonsina y el mar" (sung in perfect castellano) which I know in other versions but none of them as good as this one. "Porque me olhas assim" a great Fausto tune, is another one of my favourites, with exquisite arrangement including the beautiful piano (Ricardo Dias) and portuguese guitar (Custodio Castelo). I presume the arrangements have been written by all musicians as that is not mentioned in the booklet (which is a pity and the only negative remark I make).
Cristina Branco is definitely a great world singer, included in a new generation of portuguese singers getting to be known abroad such as Dulce Pontes, Sara Tavares, Mariza, Ana Moura, Misia, Teresa Salgueiro (Madredeus) etc. I'm proud of them all, but Cristina is my first choice.

5 out of 5 stars A Portuguese Carla Bruni.......2006-08-04

Excellent work; this woman is obviously talented enough to reach beyond her genre (I generally am not a fan of this type of music since it usually sounds regurgitated).

And what a great cover of Case Of You!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-06-20

I am speechless! (I don't know Portugese)

This is the first album I have heard from this musician, and I am already a major fan!

After listening to it a few times you will probably want to learn Portugese!

Branco is one of the younger divas of Portuguese fado, a mournfully sexy tradition born among Lisbon's low-class waterfront dives. Like the blues, Greek rebetika, Brazilian samba and Argentine tango, it was once considered marginal at best. But international interest grew and the style was gradually rehabilitated, losing its outsider status but none of its delirium-inducing beauty. Like the late Amalia Rodrigues, Branco is gifted with an alto of crystalline purity. Her voice has pliable, wood-dove like overtones; she is the essence of wrong-headed passion and wounded vulnerability. For this outing, Branco and her guitarist/music director/husband, Custódio Castelo, have assembled a mixed program, wherein classic fados exist side-by-side with a tune by the brilliant Brazilian songwriter, Chico Buarque. Castelo has also composed music to lyrics by bossa nova legend Vinicius de Moraes, Luiz Vaz de Camoens, a medieval Portuguese poet and even a luscious translation of William Shakespeare's Sonnet 136. --Christina Roden

    5 out of 5 stars Carressingly Beautiful.......2005-11-10

Cristina Branco departs somewhat from her more traditional Fado-based repertoire and style on this gorgeous CD. The instrumentation of Portugese and Spanish guitars (viola and guitarra) has not changed; yet an intiguing harpsichord-like effect is achieved at times. One track features piano but Cristina has used that before. Her passionate interpretation and beautiful singing are everything her fans have come to expect, and more. If ever a woman made love with her voice, Cristina does so here. Although I do not understand Portugese, I love the sound of the language, and it's hard not to with such a songstress. The harmonic progressions and song structures are not typical Fado, but bear some resemblances to general European popular music instead. Purists may be dismayed. However, if you are an adventurous listener who seeks sensuous and moving world music, you will not be disappointed by "Sensus."

    4 out of 5 stars Not a typical fadista.......2005-05-20

This album is different than other fados; I hesitate to call it fado at all. While the music definitely has its roots in fado, it is much more smooth and elegant than fado tends to be. It is a beautiful album, but don't expect the wild, expressive passion which generally characterizes this style. Her voice sounds classically trained, and the lyrics are extremely sensual. The background guitars and piano almost create a counterpoint melody and reaffirm the smooth, elegant feel. There is not much variation in the album; everything is sensual, graceful, and very low-key. Her voice is lovely, but not much more.

    2 out of 5 stars unimpressive.......2005-04-07

This album is fado diluted by "adult contemporary" musical drivel. A dissatisfying cocktail, indeed. I suggest sticking with Mariza.

    5 out of 5 stars A valentine for grown-ups.......2003-07-10

Cristina Branco was already my favorite of the new wave of Portuguese singers taking up the Amalia Rodrigues torch and this CD is in many ways her best. As in her previous CDs the instrumentation is limited to guitars and a here, a piano. There is a broader range of styles of songs including a sultry Chico Buarque number among others. What I find most gratifying is the lyrics that are the bases for the songs: erotic, poetic, smart. I don't know of anyone doing material like this in English and that's a pity--Booty call and ho's got old a long time ago. If you don't understand Portuguese this CD is worth the bucks for the music; if you can follow the language, treat yourself to a sensual valentine with this one.

There are few forms of music more romantic, sentimental, and beautiful than the Portuguese folk style known as fado, which literally means "fate." Fado offers an often transcendent mix of traditional Portuguese love poems, acoustic Mediterranean-style music, and diva-like vocalists. Amália Rodrigues was fado's greatest, most defining voice, and now Cristina Branco has turned into one of the music's most promising performers after two excellent albums on small independent labels in the last three years. This album was released by Decca, and, as always, you don't need to understand Portuguese to get the gist of the music. Branco's quivering vibrato and sweeping intonation easily convey the often tragic spirit of love that fuels these songs. But even as she is placed on center stage, Branco is supported by remarkable Portuguese guitarist Custodio Castelo, the leader and main soloist of the stringed trio that supports her on most of the album's 16 songs. Here's a chance to hear a remarkably passionate music performed by one of its leading exponents. --Tad Hendrickson

    Album Details

2001 release by this great interpreter of Portuguese / Fado song and heir apparent to the legendary Amalia Rodrigues and new queen of the genre, Dulce Pontes. On this, her third album, she covers the works of famous Portuguese poets like Pessoa and honors the tradition of the Fado while enriching it with her modern vocal creativity.

I have to respectfully disagree with a reviewer below who feels that the musicianship and arrangements on this recording are effectively `preventing the musicians from expressing the feeling that makes the fado a special art form'. On the contrary, I think that the beautiful arrangements, so masterfully executed by Cristina's accompanists, rather than getting in the way, frame her voice and delivery with grace and perfection - and her voice, in my opinion, is one of the most expressive you're likely to come across. Despite the dexterity and technique displayed by the players here, the arrangements are actually fairly unadorned - there's no overdubbing that I can hear, just two incredible musicians pouring their souls into their playing, supporting and augmenting and complementing Cristina's lovely voice. One of the editorial reviews makes mention of Dulce Pontes - a stunningly talented artist who has her roots in fado, but has taken her art beyond the genre's limitations. I think Cristina's work is the closest to the traditional form and delivery of fado of any of its contemporary practitioners.

There is beautiful, expressive poetry to be found in these songs - sung in Portuguese, but with French and English translations thoughtfully provided. Cristina draws her program from various sources, including one poem by Fernando Pessoa, Portugal's (literally) multi-faceted gift to the world [check out Bévinda's album of settings of his poetry, PESSOA EM PESSOAS - it's stunning]. Cristina's voice is simply breathtaking - its power and beauty and emotion will draw you in immediately, and when the disc is over, you'll be wishing it could go on and on (just hit the repeat button, as if you'll need any encouragement...). Custodio Castelo's Portuguese guitar is delicate, precise, and never overbearing - he also wrote several of the settings. The bass guitar of Fernando Maia is equally tasteful - the bass guitars being the album's only concession to electricity. These two musicians accompany Cristina on most of the selections - `Tu tens de me acountecer' features the song's composers, José Fontes Rocha (Portuguese guitar) and Jorge Fernando (guitar), along with Joel Pina (bass guitar); `Portos', an instrumental composed by Castelo, showcases Carlos Manual Proença (guitar) and Marino de Freitas (bass guitar); and `Locals' offers us its composer, Miguel Carvalhinho (classical guitar).

This is simply an incredibly beautiful, thoroughly emotional, and masterfully performed album - the recording quality is crystal clear, an advantage unavailable to some of the `classic' performers of fado from years gone by. Imagine what Amalia Rodrigues would sound like with contemporary recording technology. We're blessed to have an artist of Cristina's caliber who is so dedicated to preserving and performing the genre - as well as singers such as Dulce Pontes and Bévinda Ferreire who are continually pushing the fado of their roots beyond its boundaries, into new and exciting territories.

I have many, many fado CDs in my collection. Although the musicianship displayed in the CD is very good, the emotional delivery of the fado is overshadowed by arrangements that are too complex, effectively preventing the musicians from expressing the feeling that makes the fado a special art form. Cristina Branco's voice is good, but it lacks the despair and anguish found in other fadistas.

If you want a display of technical musical ability, this is your CD...

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Janis Joplin.......2002-09-23

For my generation, the paragon of singing from the heart was Janis Joplin. In Cristina Branco you'll find a voice of similar intensity but less raspiness and more shading of feelings. Notice how young she sounds in "Aconteceu" and yet how inwardly sure that hers is a great love, which "just happened." By contrast, in "Meu Amor e Marinheiro" she is tight-lipped and defiant - maybe wearing her boyfriend's jacket, waiting for him to come back from the sea and "break open all the jail cells." In "Musa" she is dazzled and sitting still ("passive as a mirror"), so as not to miss a moment as love ignites. You don't need to know any Portuguese to understand that Cristina Branco is a great singer for this and any generation.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic of Classical Music.......2007-04-11

There are those who would sacrifice their first-born to be present at the 1958 performance of Maria Callas at Lisbon, conducted by Franco Ghione. For those who don't have first-born, this performance was captured live by EMI engineers, although in sub-optimal sound. If you want to know why so many people go ga-ga over Callas, give this a spin.

3 out of 5 stars Classic La Traviata.......2007-03-09

While it is a good live recording of La Traviata with Maria Callas, it was made in the 1950's and has been processed too many times.

There should be more modern and higher fidelity recordings available.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Opera's Fabled and Legendary Performances.......2006-10-28

I'm not sure what prompted me to purchase the LP version of this recording of LA TRAVIATA over twenty five years ago. I was just beginning to build my opera recording collection and the name Maria Callas was one that I recognized, so I purchased the set. Stickers on the plastic covering claimed it was the greatest recording of the work ever! When I first listened to it, I wondered what all the fuss surrounding this recording was all about. Keep in mind I failed to notice that it was a live recording. When I heard all the background noise, including the prompter giving lines, as well as all the stage movements (the microphones had to be at floor level), as well as the uneven sound, perfect at some moments, then distant sounding, I decided I was ripped off, that is until the recording got to "E'stano/Sempre Libera" then all the background noise and defects went into the background and I believe I experienced the sumptuousness of Callas' voice for all it was worth. Years later I learned that this recording is the fabled "Lisbon Traviata" the subject of a play as well as rumors of an even better pirate recording of this performance. Little did I know I had purchased a bit of opera history.

Certainly this set has many wonderful qualities. Since Callas is live, we hear how she totally embraced a role and Violetta, one of her favorites and best loved roles, comes to life in this set in a manner few other sets can match. We also have a young Alfredo Kraus, just beginning his career, and we're gifted with his light and flexible voice, one that seems perfectly suited to the character of Alfredo. Mario Serini's Papa Germont is just what a Verdian father ought to be. We also hear an energized orchestra and chorus of Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos, Lisboa. My guess is the company knew this was a performance for the ages and fortunately, we have a record of it.

I'm giving this set five stars because the performance is a five star performance, no doubt. Its energy and excitement more than compensate for its few flaws that are common in live performances. As far as recording quality, it would be about two stars, even for 1958 standards. EMI does as good as job as possible to give it a clear sound, but there are just too many background noises and uneven moments to do too much of a difference. I don't recall noticing so many noises in the LP version and it's quite possible that this is one set that works better as an LP. Still it's an electrifying performance and since my record player no longer works and I have no idea where the LP is, I'm glad I have this set and always feel its excitement any time I listen to it.

    5 out of 5 stars A reference.......2006-05-03

I have seen several reviews about this Traviata. I am glad to see it constitutes a reference "de facto". I will throw some light on some points I have read...

At the time of this recording, Kraus was just beginning his carreer as a singer; he was in his first or second year of singing, and when he was offered to perform with Callas, he at first hesitated, overwhelmed by the myth and by certain bad fame she had about her character and temper. In the end, this was the only time they sang together. Kraus always referred to her as a very amiable and helpful colleague.

The only problem with this opera is the quality of the recording, for it was originally a pirate one, the same as the video. The edition in this CD has mastered the sound and a great many of the defects the original, raw recorded had, have been eliminated (I have one copy of the original that was sold by small companies before this edition was released).

Musically, the opera is definitive. The main problem with Traviatas is that singers may be unsuited for some parts of their characters. For example, the role of Violetta is light and agile at the beginning, and grows more dramatic. Fantastic performances such as Caball?'s lack, perhaps, a little more lightness, especially in the first act. With the role of Alfredo, the main issue is the deepness of his personality, sometimes not fully transmitted by performers. In both characters, sensitivity forms a critical part of the plot. Sometimes the action takes place very quickly and with very little words (think of the return of Alfredo in the second act, when he finds Violetta writing a letter), fact which requires that the singers transmit the full emotional charge in very little time. In this opera, emotions evolve not by what the characters say, but actually due to the things they don't mention and the listener feels and deducts. From the point of view of the artist, this is a formidable challenge, for a few notes must concentrate the expression to fire emotions and imagination in the public.

With all this in mind, it is easy to see why this performance excels, for both Maria Callas and Alfredo Kraus are splendidly sensitive and dedicated singers, who thoroughly analyzed their parts and designed the best of interpretations. Their extraordinary vocal capabilities allow them to paint every detail of feeling, every psychological twist. The transformation of Violetta portrayed by Callas is fantastic, and the emotional charge she puts with the few words of the "Amami, Alfredo" are impressive. Kraus is fascinating, especially being such an early singer at the time, and having grown immense to share performance with Callas. The delicacy and finesse of his "Ah! s?, da un anno" are unmatched. I tend to think that Callas and Kraus suffered a sort of mutual understanding in this opera which improved each other's interpretation. It is often said that one always grows better when beside a great artist; and they both were.

I regret I had not the chance to be at the theatre that night, for I happened to be at a Kraus Traviata many years after (1995!), and, having seen it once, I can imagine what that Callas-Kraus performance might have been live.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance and recording.......2007-02-02

If you like Rossini, this is an a must-have recording. Sure, he tended to write the same pieces over and over again, but they are utterly delightful. These performances by Neville Marriner and his personal orchestra are precise, and the fun inherent in many of these works does not get lost in the shuffle. The orchestra is blessed with excellent woodwind players; just listen to the oboe on some of the really fast passages.

Nice recorded sound. I really don't have anything bad to say about this entire package. It's almost a desert island recording for times where Mahler or Beethoven might be a little (or a lot) heavy.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......2005-03-17

Yes, these overtures may be cliched, but every classical collector should probably have them. Marriner, as usual, gives great performances, and the sound quality is very good.

    5 out of 5 stars Sparkling Performances.......2003-09-15

I only have glowing things to say about this set of Rossini overtures. First of all, Rossini's overtures are brilliant gems. They are light, fun and full of life!! Secondly, Marriner's conducting is marvellous. The performance sparkle like precious diamonds. Everything is very enjoyable, there's not a single boring number, unlike many other discs you purchase. And to top it off, it comes at a terrific bargain price. 3 very full CDs - 75 mins, 30 mins and 65 mins - of top notch music at seven dollars a piece is incredible.
