Ah, no reviews yet. My knees quiver as I hope I don't misrepresent this record.

So I'll start with a snippet from the Allmusic Guide review:
"Songwriter Joe Thebeau contemplates the human condition through the lens of automotive culture, mixing rock with popular physics in a song cycle examining our place amid the universal dynamics of speed, space, rest, and motion."

Power pop meets introspective indie rock, maybe? For me, this album ranges from the exciting (Dramamine for Engine 3) to the kinda boring (Universal Hum, Hangover...), from fresh (Concord Village...) to derivative (Guided by Voices clones "Recent Linear Landscapes", "Physics of Drunk Driving" and others, although one could step past GBV and suggest an aping of The Who instead).

I can't put my finger on the '90s-esque band that butts up against Guided by Voices as the best reference point for this band. Not Weezer.... not Replacements, not Fig Dish. Oh, well. Imagine a little more straightforward GBV with a more consistant lyrical approach: references to physics and automobiles and suburbia earnestly slung atop nicely overdriven guitars, thumping bass and drums. Worth hearing, but not my new favorite album!

Product Description

Having recently supported Four Tet in the UK, New York's Paul Schneider should have attracted a few more British converts to his accomplished left-of-centre indie-rock material. Heartfelt without being cloying, each song on "Escape Velocity" is delivered with warmth, tenderness and more than enough tunes. Like a more soothing Elvis Costello, Schneider is an easy on the ear vocalist who begins with the laid-back and light but slightly anguished 'Event Horizon' and then proceeds to knock out heavier, more intense guitar hooks on 'Echo Of Your Heart', 'Don't Walk Around' and 'Waiting'. The closing riff of 'I Remember You' even threatens to approach shoegazing and further surprises - country guitar on 'Tourniquet' and the sinister drum beats of 'Feed' - work well in different musical environments. Schneider never threatens to push back the boundaries of rock but - like all good songwriters - maintains a high level of interest and melody throughout.

Sandy Weltman - Jazz Master!!!.......2003-02-10

Sandy Weltman is a master Modern Jazz player on two instruments that sometimes escape the deserved attention of Jazz affeciandos; Banjo and Harmonica. Taking his cues from Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, Weltman first became a master banjo player, then he study under Flecktones master harmonica master Howard Levy. The results are outstanding.

The banjo itself is not a novelty instrument in jazz. The instruments has been featured from the genre's roots in Dixieland and with the works of Louis Armstrong and his Banjo virtuoso Johnny St. Cyr. Virtually dropped from Jazz for decades, it took masters like Bela Fleck to re-introduce the instrument. The harmonica has also taken some hard knocks from those people who claim to "know" Jazz. Weltman is equally adept at either instrument and uses each one nimbly. Those he is young and hopefully has a long and fruitful career ahead of him, Weltman plays with the confidence of one of the old masters.

I definitely recommend that you give this CD a listen if you have any doubts as to the place of either Banjo or Hrmonica in Jazz.
