Soprano/tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Marion Meadows comes from the smooth jazz sax tradition paved by Grover Washington, Jr. and George Howard. Though his sound is not a full as those two, he makes up for it with his lyricism, which imbues the twelve tracks here. Highlights include the "down-low" quiet-storm track "Miss Know it All," with vocalist Will Brock, "Dance With My Daughter," Meadows' companion piece to Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father,""and his engaging cover of R. Kelley's "I Believe I Can Fly." The lively "Steppers...Let's Do This" is a high-energy salute to the disco-house dance genre from Chicago. With production by keyboardists Michael Broening and Chris "Big Dog" Davis and some instrumental support from guitarists Chuck Loeb and Freddy Fox, this recording is the right fit for Marion Meadows' contemporary fans. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Customer Reviews:

As always Marion's art of soprano playing is head and shoulders above any current and forseeable smooth jazz sax players.
Supreme sound, engaging mood!.......2007-03-13
Among the new promises of the sax in this genre, Marion Meadows has become a figure of first order. His kaleidoscopic arrangements, memorable harmonies and brilliant display of febrile lyricism, have earned him an enviable status in this hour.
Go for this album; one of the best of the year and convince by yourself. He is one of the greatest ones of the instrument.

Great Selections, So-So Collection.......2000-06-23
This Sony recording supposedly collects his best. It does and it doesn't. The "Danse Macabre"--a perennial Saint Saëns fave--is definitely better than any others on the market--crisper, livelier, and ... er... creepier. And the Bacchanale is also superbly done. (Don't take my word for it though--you can compare these yourself from the various samples.) But as great as these individual pieces are, Sony failed to bring to the "Swan" the rest of the zoo from "Carnivale des Animaux," and, worse, they forgot the "Aquarium," too! Plus, the "Organ Symphony" *must* be heard in its entirety to sound like the serious piece of music that it is.
I haven't found the noumenal Saint-Saëns collection yet. But this one surely isn't phenomenal.

In some parallel, '70s-groove-askew universe it's Eagles of Death Metal who are the superstars, not merely the studiously dizzy spin-off of Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and his Palm Desert school chum/lapsed journalist Jesse Hughes. Building forcefully on the charms of their '04 debut, their camaraderie foregoes ego (QOTSA mainstay Homme is EODM's drummer, pal Hughes its falsetto-voiced, ax-slinging rock star) for a retro, ambitiously naïve garage-rock-meets-boogie-down ethos that labors under the delightfully perverse misconception that the New York Dolls, Hot Chocolate and T Rex were all actually the same band - one that Muddy Waters and The Big Bopper occasionally sat in with. Less demented talents have pumped similar shtick full of self-conscious irony; here H&H simply grab it by the neck and shake furiously, yielding "I Gotta Feeling"'s Bolan boogie, the Stones-ish "I Like to Move.." and Dolls-swaggering "Keep Your Head Up," before moving onto such enticing genre demolition derby entries as "Ballad of Queen Bee and Baby Duck," "Chase the Devil" and the giddy "Shasta Beast." --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
The Dream Boys dynamic duo is back. This Joshua Homme produced album sounds exactly the way God intended live rock and roll to sound: raw, sleazy, and spiffy. It's more hook laden than your old job at the bait shop. Put your dancing shoes on.Customer Reviews:

"Everything about this release by violinist Rachel Barton Pine is exceptional." --ClassicsToday [10/10] (on Scottish Fantasies)"Recordings don't get any better than this." -- ClassicsToday [10/10] (on Brahms & Joachim Violin Concertos)
Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine was a child prodigy who began performing in public at age seven. Today she is one of America's most acclaimed violinists, as well as the best selling artist on Cedille Records. Maud Powell (1867-1920) was the premier female American violinist of her era, and she made numerous classic recordings between 1904 and 1919 that are still sought after by collectors. This CD is a tribute from one eminent American violinist to another, honoring Maud Powell for the tremendous positive influence she had on later American artists. All of the selections are works recorded originally by Powell, now able to be heard in contemporary sound. Many of the selections are seldom or never recorded elsewhere, and all are extremely accessible.

The Inner Psychological and Philosopical Questions of Power .......2007-06-25
The composer, John C. Adams, uses the "minimalist" approach to which I am also somewhat unfamiliar. The only minimalist works I've heard proir to "Nixon in China" are Gorecki's beautiful and sad, "Symphony of Sorrow" and "The Photographer" by Philip Glass.
This opera seems to sound a lot like what little of the music of Philip Glass I have heard. It also sounds a bit like Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" at times. There are really no "songs" that one can sieze, as the entire 2 1/2 hours has the same unending feel to it.
I would say that the music style makes "Nixon in China" a piece of moods and feelings rather than "beautiful melodies". These moods and feelings are dependent on the well-crafted liberetto (collection of lyrics) and expressive singing. At times, the opera becomes very intense and urgent. In this sense, "Nixon in China" is more akin to "Orfeo" than "The Magic Flute".
Through it all, "Nixon in China" is a very intriguing opera. It is a truly modern work, unlike anything by Beethoven through Stravinsky or Schoenberg. The setting and subject matter are also something new: not mythological or based on some great novel or play; but rather a diplomatic mission between two of the most important nations on the geo-political stage in our modern age: China and the USA.
The inner psychological and philosopical questions of power are also explored through the complex characterizations of Nixon, Mao, Kissenger and Cho En-lai. As a student of music, psychology and history; I found the very idea of "Nixon in China" quite interesting.
An Opera about Nixon.......2007-01-20
Fabu.......2005-11-22
The libretto is stunningly brilliant. It gets enough attention so I won't add anything here.
The music is lyrical and addictive. You will find yourself whistling, humming or just full out singing it outloud while walking down the street. The first time you listen to it you will be completely hooked from the very beginning and be in full on gush mode by the end of Nixon's "News" aria at the end of the very first scene.
I won't mention this recording too much. Could it be better? Yes. I am simply desperate for a DVD version like the other Adams operas "el Nino" and "Death of Klingenhoffer." But US residents shouldn't complain since I paid double the price here in the Netherlands.
In the end "Nixon in China" basically uses every trick in the opera bag. It will definitely be an opera that lasts. Ten years after I heard it for the first time it is just as crisp and addictive as before.
Lastly. On a complete side note. I've heard excerpts of "Nixon in China" in the "Civilizations IV" computer game as the background music to the modern era.

The Brandenburg Concertos seem to be Bach's most popular works by far, and there are so many recordings of them out there--on period instruments and "modern," and at all price ranges. Of course, it's hard to pick out one or even two to call the "best"--but this reissue of a 1989 recording by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment has a good claim for the title of "Best Buy Brandenburgs." These performances don't have the splashy extroversion of Il Giardino Armonico or the caffeine-pumped, high-velocity thrill of Musica Antiqua Köln, but they're not overly reserved or dull, as some English ensembles are accused of being. The OAE's instrumental playing is very skillful indeed, with particularly nice work from the horns in the third movement of the First Concerto, and from trumpeter Mark Bennett in the Second; and the tempos are moderately quick (which means that they would have been considered rather fast before 1980 or so), but without being breathless. The slow movements sing sweetly--the viola playing of Monica Huggett and Pavlo Besnosiuk in the slow movement of the Sixth Concerto is especially lovely--and the quick outer movements have an infectiously bouncy pulse. If money is no object, you might want to consider Il Giardino Armonico or the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, but these here are surely the best Brandenburgs available at such a low price. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:

In other ways this is a spectacular recording. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment gives a graceful and articulate reading of the concertos, and the recorded sound is clear, warm, and spacious. But, despite the bargain price, it's not worth it just to get two copies of concertos 4-6.

I bought the cd without hearing any of the other tracks. My mistake. I heard the rest of her cd and I didn't hear that edginess that I was excited to hear. Even the song that I was first introduced to sounded different and overly poppy.
I was hoping for Alanis Morissette meets Fiona Apple (or better), and I got Avril Lavigne meets Veruca Salt meets Michelle Branch. Talk about a let down.

REALLY GOOD MODERN POP/ROCK RECORD.......2006-04-12
In retrospect, it's a pretty solid, polished post-millennial pop/rock album, but don't just easily put it as a totally average album. It's chock full of tracks that are as catchy as they are sincere. Having your album produced by uber pop god Max Martin kinda helps out a lot, crafting a slick pop/rock album that's as accessible as it seems artistic.
All the tracks are great, by the way. Did I mention Marion Raven's easy on the eyes too (even though she tries to seem more boho and grungy with this one - she's still very much prepackaged and hot). Here's a track-by-track review of the album:
1. "End Of Me" - One of the catchiest tracks off the album is also one of the loudest and most frenetic: a stomper of a pop/rock anthem in the same vein as Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and The Veronicas' "4Ever." This one adds an eeriness that's different from the direct mainstream approach of the other two artists, especially with the use of the piano and guitar in the intro. Great, catchy, fast-paced track that's used to open the album with a bang.
2. "Here I Am" - A full on declaration, well, since the track's pretty self-explanatory. Angsty, yet loud at the same time. It's still catchy, but it's also epic with the use of the strings and big midtempo rockin' beats in the background.
3. "Break You" - THIS is a pop anthem here. Sounds like a pissed off female version to Backstreet Boys' "Incomplete," except more suited for an arena rock stadium. This is as loud as the album gets, and it's pretty damn loud.
4. "Crawl" - Not as instantly catchy as the first three tracks and not as outstanding either, but it's still catchy, bouncy, yet angsty pop/rock.
5. "Little By Little" - The pace slows down a bit and I think one weakness of the album is how the slowed down songs make the mood more somber than they are (since a lot of the album deals with angst to begin with, fast or slow songs alike). It's sweet and innocent, but it lacks the power of the other tracks.
6. "Get Me Out Of Here" - Another catchy pop/rock track that's expected at this point. It gets formulaic, yet it's still a lot of fun to listen to because it's anthemic, fast, and catchy.
7. "13 Days" - Another epic pop/rock track that's unlike the darker mainstream stuff Evanescence and Avril Lavigne have done lately. It's got a growling background with strings and bass, but it's all to the effect. Pretty good.
8. "For You I'll Die" - An ode to a lover. Marion Raven pours her heart out for this one, mainly because it's a very piano-laden ballad that's sparse and not as polished as the other tracks. It's a very intimate candlelight setting, but eerie at the same time.
9. "Let Me Introduce Myself" - Yet another catchy mid-tempo pop/rock track. It's okay, especially since there have been other better tracks that came before it.
10. "Heads Will Roll" - Great intro: almost Bj?rk-like, but it then turns out to be a really rockin' track that's just as pissed-off-sounding as any angry track here. It's darker and more experimental, yet it's not totally alienating.
11. "At The End Of The Day" - One of a few lighter moments in the album, it's pretty cheesy because it's lightweight adult contemporary/alternative. It's happy and catchy.
12. "Six Feet Under" - Like "13 Days," it's epic, yet this is more melodic and straight up pop/rock rather than trying to be a super orchestrated track. It's one of the slower Max Martin tracks, yet it's one of the best in the album because it's so melodic.
13. "Gotta Be Kidding" - A total change from "Six Feet Under" because the melody in this ain't as familiar and it's so disjointed. It's weird, but it's still straight up pop/rock. The random blasts of energy during the chorus is weird too, but you get used to it.
14. "In Spite Of Me" - Like "Little By Little," it's a more sweet track that shows a more vulnerable side to Marion Raven, the solo artist. It's a nice way to close the album because it's so simple and sweet, but it closes it in a sleepy manner.
So this album is actually a mixed bag of pissed off rocky numbers, some okay pop/rockers, and some sentimentally sweet slow numbers. With her thin, yet clear voice, she's best when she sings and not screams, yet her louder tracks end up being her catchier ones. "Here I Am" may not be Marion at her peak yet, but it's a great indication of what she's capable of: she's a promising artist with great potential, even though she might seem like another slick concauction of the pop industry.

The pulsations of Steve Reich's landmark Music for 18 Musicians signify a New Music precipice. Where so much music after World War II explored extremes of tone, time, and register, Reich--and some of his colleagues in the 1960s and after--gravitated towards immersion in repetitions and telescoped focus on tonal areas. The combination of piano, vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, clarinets, violin, cello, and female voices is intoxicating in Reich's hands. Reich creates a middle-register, ringing vamp with burnished reed palpitations and, eventually, quick, rolling piano figures emerge in tandem with the percussion. This recording is the second-best known, next to the ECM Records version of the piece, and is warm and colorfully tingling. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
Does it Expand or Contract?.......2007-04-17
This is no ordinary piece of music. It is hypnotic and beautiful, as most other reviewers point out. It can put all other music out of your mind for periods of time; you only want to stay in the trance.
There are light and dark energies at play in this music. The elements of light are held in the beautiful syntax of rhythm and melody. You might find yourself singing or whistling along very intensely, and even creating new layers to the music with your voice. The elements of darkness are represented as a sense of neurotic insanity, or obsessive particularity.
To be hyptotized for its own sake is dangerous. What is behind this hypnosis? What energy is being expressed here? As you move into your third and fourth listen, ask yourself whether you feel expansion or contraction.
For those who are interested in trance states and deep inward gazing, this recording is definitely an experience worth having. If nothing else, it can remind us that music is awesomely powerful.
majestic .......2006-12-10
The term minimalist seems to indicate simplicity or shallowness, but this music is neither. This is in fact very deep and moving music, full of emotion and dynamic ideas.
one of my favorite pieces of music ever composed.......2005-11-29
Performed by musicians, just as the title states, it actually might fall into what many would consider 'trance' music. It's highly repetitive, and while it bears no relation to the crap being pedalled as trance music these days, it's nearly as hypnotic as any music you'll find. With vocals, stringed instruments, lots of percussive elements (vibraphone, gamelan, marimba, maracas), pianos, and clarinets, it's one of those pieces of music that you can trace back to as a starting point for not only individual artists, but genres as well. It blends non-western, classical, and even a touch of jazz for something that was original at the time, and still stands solidly on that ground.
With all this praise I'm heaping on this piece, I must warn that if you don't enjoy repetitive music, you probably won't appreciate this release quite as much. While it is repetitive, though, it's far from minimal (although it's grouped into that category often). Unfurling over the course of 11 different parts, as well as phasing pieces that lead into and end the overall composition, it breathes like something real and organic as each instrument and voice take their place with the harmony and again blend back down into the mix. It's constantly moving and shifting, and while there are moments of quieter transition, there are also ones of breathtaking splendor as melodies overlap and change speed while different instruments come into and out of focus. It's like taking several different minimal paintings printed on transparencies and subtely shifting them over one another to create new pieces as you see colors blend into one another and fold into something new each time.
Considering that the piece is one that's performed by actual people, the juxtaposition of the different elements is quite amazing (of course, imagining how you would program something like this electronically also staggers the mind), and as mentioned before, you can hear little bits of everyone from Tortoise to different electronic artists like Vladislav Delay and Gas (Mike Ink) having developed parts from it. While their were groundbreaking pieces both before and after it, it's one of those recordings that will envelope you if you allow it to. So, if you're a fan of modern electronic music or even post rock, you should probably hunt down this release and hear it at least once. If you can, simply stop doing everything else, pop it in the CD player and relax with it on a pair of headphones for the entirety of the release. You'll come to just under 70 minutes later when the CD stops spinning, and chances are you'll want to do it again sometime. I certainly do.

Steve Reich's Music.......2005-09-15
BEWARE........2005-08-09
Now I'm a fan of folk, indie rock, some hip-hop, country, choral music, hardcore, and other classical artists, but it wasn't until I heard 'Music For 18 Musicians' during my sophomore year in college during a semester abroad in Oxford, England that I could settle on one album for that top spot. No more sifting through Kid A, Pet Sounds, Rites Of Spring, or Heartbreaker...No this was the mathematically perfect piece of music that you've been looking for all your life.
I originally heard the ECM recording (only through the first 5 chords) and normally the first version I hear tends to be my favorite, but the Nonesuch recording is so rich, longer, better recorded, and it's divided into separate tracks as everyone has already pointed out.
The way '18' weaves in and out of it's chords is not an ambient minimalist piece that you can enjoy as mere background music like an Eno record but this is more for concentrated listens. Not to say that it can't be enjoyed in the passive form, but I definitely get more from the concentrated full-run sessions.
Beware though; this piece can often turn you against all other music for long periods of time. Also it made me realize I would never be a musician. You'll just want to write something this perfect, and I knew that I couldn't. My talents lie elsewhere.
