About the Artist
George Mgrdichian was born in Philadelphia, oud virtuoso George Mgrdichian has been credited with taking the oud from the cabaret to the concert stage. Holding a Bachelor and Master degree from the prestigious Juliard School of Music, George debuted in 1967 at a recital at Town Hall in New York City. From that point, he was asked to make a guest performance with the New York Philharmonic, an event which marked the performance of the oud with a major symphony orchestra. The artistry of Mr. Mgrdichian can be heard on over sixty-five recordings including ARP's One Man's Passion. He received Special Merit awards from Stereo Review and Billboard magazines. Recently, George finished a lengthy appearance in the Off-Broadway play Nine Armenians, performing and composing on the oud.

George Mgrdichian, America's oud virtuoso performs with some of the finest musicians in New York. This album is the perfect Middle Eastern instrumental album featuring traditional music and inspirational "taksim" playing by the musicians. Created initially for an Arab sheik who heard George perform at a concert several years ago. The sheik enjoyed George's sound and commissioned him to make an album of ancient Arabic folklore songs with a heavy jazz influence. Unfortunately, the sheik died before hearing the finished recording. The result of one man's passion for music is this album. A must for George Mgrdichian fans!

The sound and mixing on these CDs are below anything. It's the type of CD where you constantly have to adjust the volume because some songs are just inaudible and then others come out blaring. Is there anything more annoying? The recording is poor quality. And the interpretations are just bland. A waste of money.

i listen to this compilation of songs all of the time. i love to listen to it while drinking my Earl Grey tea. and eating a piping hot english muffin. pure bliss!

Something for everyone!.......2004-01-11

This double CD is certainly worth the small price. The choral music runs the gamut from Bach to John Tavener, all represented by well-known choirs and conductors. Although the music is wonderful, the selctions are not in any order, sometimes creating confusion. But give a listen and if you do not get hooked on the greatest choral music ever written, then you need to crawl back in your cave!

Very powerful and moving.......2000-04-10

These two CD's, one titled Music Sublime and the other Music All-Powerful, bring together some of the greatest choral masterpieces ever composed. The All-Powerful CD, by the way, is not easy listening.

Many of the performances are simply the best available, however the performance of Mozart's Requiem, one of my favorite works, on this CD doesn't capture all the power and mystery of this glorious masterpiece. Also surprising is that the CD's don't include anything from Mozart's Great Mass in C, the powerful Finale of Haydn's Seven Last Words of Christ, or Vivaldi's Gloria. No Schubert either, and Borodin's powerful choruses from Prince Igor are also left out. Well, you can only fit so much on two CD's, but the above mentioned works are, in my humble opinion, more important than some of the music selections on these discs. If you love choral music, however, get ready for music paradise. And if you don't love choral music already, what better way to get started.

Album Description

George Mgrdichian, America's oud virtuoso performs with some of the finest musicians in New York. This album is the perfect Middle Eastern instrumental album featuring traditional music and inspirational "taksim" playing by the musicians. Created initially for an Arab sheik who heard George perform at a concert several years ago. The sheik enjoyed George's sound and commissioned him to make an album of ancient Arabic folklore songs with a heavy jazz influence. Unfortunately, the sheik died before hearing the finished recording. The result of one man's passion for music is this album. A must for George Mgrdichian fans!

Nice :) great fusion of traditional arabic classics and percussion with some modern but not synsathised jazz elements. I like folkloric middle eastern dance and I liked this because of it's classical arabic dance elements and percussion patterns but I also liked the fuller intrumentation rage ( sax, etc ) Mr. Mrgrichain is a great Oud player and can surely assemble an impressive arrangement of middle eastern and western musicians and instruments. I think the fusion is a peaceful way to get other cutures together. Wow Peace through music !! Good job guys.

I really like acoustic music and that's one reason why I keep coming back to this recording for my radio program Caravan on WSUM FM in Madison, Wisconsin. The brilliance of the recording quality and the hypnotic effect of the middle eastern music pull at the heart and the mind. I own the 1990 Shanachie version of this recording.

Very interesting.......2005-02-15

Josef Krips is my favorite conductor of all time, especially of Mozart. I had never heard him conduct Verdi, and even though he would have been of an advanced age in 1971 (the year of this recording), I bought it anyway.

This is good collection of highlights: it is over 70 minutes long and includes pretty much every major aria and ensemble in the opera. The conducting of Krips is, as I expected, logical and elegant in his Viennese fashion. As another reviewer has noted, there are a few beats where the singers and orchestra aren't in the same groove - but it's a live performance, and the performers are on their toes and are back together in no time. These mistakes are merely ripples and no energy is lost.

Nicolai Gedda annd Ileana Cotrubas (who is to me the most splendid of all Violettas), are no-brainers. They sparkle together in as Alfredo and Violetta should, and sink together properly later on as well.

The recording quality is merely decent; but for a budget label, such is hardly unexpected. Get this if you like Krips, or great conducting in general, and certainly if you enjoyed Cotrubas in the Kleiber set.

$5 for these wonderful Traviata highlights is a steal........2000-12-07

Both Ileana Cotrubas and Nicolai Gedda are in fine voice for this 1971 live performance from the Vienna Staatsoper. Cotrubas, in particular, was in the early spring of her career and had just signed a three year contract with the house. All the promise of a magnificent career can be heard in her already maturing artistry and dramatic emphasis, and that, combined with the youthful bloom and beauty of her lovely, evenly placed soprano, makes this a thrilling operatic introduction. We get a generous hour and a quarter of music and the particular joy of hearing Cornell Macneil's authentic Verdian baritone in it's prime. Josef Krips conducts with rather too much enthusiasm at times, and leaves his tenor, soprano and chorus behind for a moment or two in Act 1. It's interesting to hear them musically bumping into each other and the overall musical and dramatic effect is not badly spoiled. The recording quality is surprisingly, very good. This is a must buy, especially at the excellent price.
