This title isn't just a joke. It makes the valid point that these Renaissance pieces occupied the same place in their culture as our pop music does in ours. People whistled these tunes in the street and danced to them at night, and you can easily accept the disc's title when hearing the Baltimore Consort's extremely lively performances, which have all the rhythmic drive and gusto of a good rock band. The ensemble's arrangements and the variety of its programming also contribute to the success of this disc, which would make an excellent introduction to music of the period. The booklet contains translations of all the vocal texts, and Dorian's sound leaps out of the loudspeakers with great clarity and presence. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars My favorite + audiophile recording.......2005-05-26

I've attended Baltimore Consort performances a number of times, and they are just about my favorite early music group. They do an outstanding job of making "old" music come alive. Sometimes early music recordings are dry and academic, and the Baltimore Consort is as far from that as you can get. Finally, they have a great since of humor, which often peaks through in their music.

They specialize in popular secular tunes of the age. Their playing is impeccable, and most of the group are accomplished soloists. La Rocque 'n' Roll is probably my favorite recording of theirs, the songs are fun, interesting, and involving. The best of the best...

The fact that the recording is technically very good is a nice bonus. As a matter of fact, "Jean de Nivelle" (track 26) is the first thing I play when evaluating speakers. It helps that I've heard the performance live (and unamplified), so I have a real life comparison. The recoding clearly captures the nuances of the individual instruments. Although obviously not as loud as modern rock, the recording still gives challenges speaker dynamics. Unlike some gee whiz audiophile recordings, I can listen to these songs again and again.

5 out of 5 stars absolute favorite .......2004-10-16

I've been collecting renaissance/medieval music for several years and have finally found something that sounds as though the musicians are actually having FUN with the repertoire. This is a blast, I recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars Fun stuff!.......2002-11-29

The jaunty, whimsical tone of this CD is set by the opening bars of the first piece, "J'ai vu le loup," which starts out with one of the musicians shouting "Un! Dieux!" Many parallels are subtly drawn between the secular music of Renaissance France and popular music of today. "The appeal of performing 'popular' repertory lies in the opportunity it provides for creative expression," explains the insert booklet. "All of the song and dance arrangements on this CD are the creation of the members of the Baltimore Consort, who sometimes only have an unharmonized melody to start with..." What they may lack in specific direction from the long-dead song writers, they more than make up for with catchy arrangements and spirited improvisations. Soprano Custer LaRue sings her sultry French lyrics with relish and gusto, and the addition of reedy crumhorns and bagpipes played by Chris Norman and Mark Cudek adds to the provincial French flavor. The fun of the music is echoed in the CD's amusing packaging: The album cover, somewhat reminiscent of the Beatles' "Abbey Road", features the ensemble members walking along in single file, with their viol and lute cases in hand. Other interior pictures of the group poke fun at other folk and rock imagery, including one shot of a gentleman in shades licking the neck of his bass viol. Not exactly the norm for early music releases, but refreshing for just that reason. Rocque on!

5 out of 5 stars A perfect album.......2000-02-22

This is my favorite CD of all time. I've had it now for five years, I listen to it all the time, and I never get tired of it. Every track is enormously beautiful, from the bright and sunny tunes through the quieter and more melancholy ones.

This is a CD that sounds perfect in the early morning, late at night, or any other time of day.

I've become a huge fan of the Baltimore Consort (one of the highlights of my life was seeing the group perform the songs on this album live at Synod Hall in Pittsburgh, PA) and "La Rocque 'n' Roll" is their "Sgt. Pepper."

5 out of 5 stars If Led Zeppelin had been born 400 years earlier..........1999-10-02

...and played the lute, they would've played like Ron McFarlane, and sang like Custer LaRue. Wonderful performances of 16th C popular music on historical instruments, with lovely twists of rock'n'roll performance techniques. Check out the jazzy krummhorn glissandos, the sexy lute strumming, the straight-ahead power vocal, and the hip plucked bass viol -- especially on the last track. This is my #1 "Desert Island Disk."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unique.......2006-02-07

This is early vocal music very much in the style currently heard in groups like the Hilliard Ensemble and Tallis Scholars. It is very spacious-sounding and solemn, which makes sense- most of the music that we have preserved from hundreds of years ago was written for use in the church. Fortunately, the gravity of the works never stops this set from being thoroughly enjoyable, too. Archiv's sound is, as always, very good.

5 out of 5 stars A classic performance.......2003-02-28

This recording remains a classic, even if (as Daniel Leech-Wilkinson points out in his accompanying notes) some of Munrow's performance practices may be disputed today. This is, quite simply, a wonderful performance and a terrific sounding recording (even after nearly 30 years)--and a wonderful way to develop an ear for the music of the 13th and 14th centuries.

5 out of 5 stars Inventive, enjoyable interpretations by Ensemble Unicorn!.......2002-11-29

These wonderful Italian dances are from the British Library's 14th century manuscript #29987. Though melodically and structurally complex, they are monophonic--only one line of music. The challenge for groups of instrumentalists is to find appropriate ways for all their members to contribute. The European musicians of Ensemble Unicorn certainly rise to the challenge, and in a creative and rousing manner. Director and recorder player Michael Posch, fiddler and shawm player Marco Ambrosini, lutenist Thomas Wimmer, percussionist Wolfgang Reithofer, and hurdy-gurdy/harp/bagpipe player Riccardo Delfino have a spirited, good time romping through the up-tempo numbers, while reflecting meditatively on the gentler ones. The quality of this and the many other Ensemble Unicorn releases for Naxos is superb without qualification, but even moreso considering that the purchase prices are less than half of what most other CDs cost. I bought every Ensemble Unicorn recording I could get my hands on, and enjoy them all--varying styles of medieval and early Renaissance music from different ages and regions, but all very well done by this talented and innovative group! Look them up by searching for "Ensemble Unicorn"--the titles are too long and numerous to cite here. If you like this particular recording and these 14th century Italian dances, you might also want to check out "Istanpitta!: A Medieval Dance Band" and "Istanpitta II: Medieval Dances" by New York's Ensemble for Early Music.

3 out of 5 stars EARLY work for this ensemble.......2001-08-11

With later releases -- especially Codex Faenza and The Black Madonna -- Unicorn proves itself the no-holds-barred best instrumental ensemble in medieval music. This is their first mass-market CD, and their musicianship is...iffy. For instance, the later-incomparable Thomas Wimmer saws monotonously through Lamento di Tristano, and the later-virtuosic Marco Ambrosini is just plain jittery. Even Michael Posch, later the only medieval musician who approaches the level of the Indian masters, is at this stage unformed. Their performance style here is very mannered, opting often for "weird" or unusual effects and approaches.

4 out of 5 stars Plays to the strengths of this band.......2001-02-23

The choice of the material again plays to the strengths of Ensemble Unicorn, and makes for a very enjoyable presentation of this mostly familiar material.

These monophonic mediaeval dance and instrumental compositions are chestnuts of early music performances. There just wasn't that much of this very early secular dance music preserved, so you have a choice of performances. Unicorn's take on them gives a good variety of instrumentation, and the extensive improvisation needed to make a whole record's worth of this familiar stuff interesting.

It's worth comparing this record to another set of recordings covering similar territory, the also enjoyable -Istanpitta- and Istanpitta II- collections. By contrast, Unicorn does not resort so much to the thundering shawms, bagpipes, and percussion that certain -Istanpitta- tracks resort to. By contrast, though, their reading of the -Tre Fontane- estampie is upbeat, recalling the classic performance by David Munrow on -The Art of Courtly Love-, as compared to -Istanpitta's- somewhat too mellow take on that number. You don't get the big swings between loud and soft here that you do from -Istanpitta-, which makes it somewhat easier to listen to.

Some of the instrumental combinations seem to evidence a sense of humour here. This record is not quite as good as -The Black Madonna- or -Songs of the Troubadors-, but it is an excellent introduction to these mediaeval dances.

5 out of 5 stars Cant find better.......1999-12-25

If you've made it this far, I assume that you are famioliar with the beauty, joy and rhythmic variety of early music. I've have discs from many renowned groups and this one is as good as any and better than most. Fresh, inventive presentations--bringing out the spirit and beauty of this music.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but What Are the Words?.......2006-07-04

This is a wonderful collection of music spanning many centuries, some of which you are unlikely to encounter anywhere else. The performances are beautiful, too. The one drawback is that the liner notes contain very few song text translations, a big problem for a large CD set with music that is primarily vocal.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding collection.......2002-09-27

I have quite a number of CDs with Medieval Age polyphony, byzantine chant and renaissance music, but this collection goes beyond what could usually be expected from such boxsets. I'd highly recommend it to all.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2001-09-20

This is the best collection of medieval music I have ever heard. The performances are top-notch, and all of the songs are well done. I highly reccomend this collection not only for fans of medieval music, but for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars 7.5 hours of superb music at a most reasonable price........1999-12-24

There isn't a clunker in this set. All the performers are top drawer and the recordings are good. The notes are a little brief and a bit scholarly, but can be ignored easily.

You will get an idea of the different kinds of medieval music as well as the top groups and soloists working currently in the field.

When I got this set, my mother and I listened to all 7+ hours straight through. We then started buying CDs from the different performers we had to hear more from.

At twice the price, this would still be an excellent addition to any classical or medieval music collection, as well as the best introduction to medieval music around.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Early Music. Buy It........2005-12-13

'The Art of Courtly Love' is a two CD set, condensed from a three LP album performed by The Early Music Consort of London. I know less than I would like about early music, considering how much I enjoy it, but one very important thing I do know is that the director of this recording, David Munrow was, until his untimely death, the big man in early music.

One of the many things I especially like about this collection is that by showcasing a lot of vocal music, the tinny quality of a lot of early music is moved to the background. Antother thing I like is the fact that one can plainly distinguish secular from liturgical music by listening carefully to these selections. The biggest differences I see are the appearance of percussion instruments and male / female duets.

One reviewer commented on the quality of the notes. I agree they are good, but only about average for an old music offering by a major label.

Highly recommended to all who like early music.

5 out of 5 stars A Fiver from one of the Archangels of early music performance.......2005-06-26

I bought this when the album was first released. Even though scholarship has advanced, and it can be argued that Munrow's interpretations are dated, what has been lost over the years is the joy in performing this music. Many modern performances are ponderous and much, much too serious. But David Munrow found this music as a wonderous discovery. Through albums such as this one, he released into the open air music that had been locked away, languishing in the libraries for years, trotted out occasionally for a scholarly study, and then tucked back on the shelves. Munrow's enthusiasm for this music is evident in this collection, and his performances make them walk - no, dance - in the open air once more. This album is beautifully performed. I hope the notes in the CD are as good as the ones in my original release.

In 1974, I had the great pleasure of meeting David Munrow and the other members of the Early Music Consort, and was blown away with that enthusiasm and unselfishness, their willingness to discuss their work - I remember Munrow trading recorder performance tips with a friend of mine - and Munrow's truly amazing store of energy. He radiated! : -)

5 out of 5 stars Outdated but Still Rivetingly Interesting.......2005-05-01

This 2-CD boxed set is the digital version of a 3-LP box from 1973 and was reissued in 1996 as part of the edition with which EMI/Virgin celebrated the twentieth anniversary of David Munrow’s unfortunate demise. The recordings, made at London’s prestigious Abbey Road studios, are digitally remastered to a very high standard, so that I found myself enjoying them via headphones more than via loudspeakers, something which is pretty unusual with CDs from the old analogue days. The two discs contains no less than some 156 minutes (51 tracks) of absolutely fascinating music. The first part is devoted to Guillaume Machault’s songs, works which can be dated around 1350 to 1360. The second part of the programme is concerned with the so-called avantgarde from Avignon (including names such as Matteo da Perugia), composers who wrote for esoteric circles around 1380 to 1410. And the third part (the third LP of the original) is devoted to fifteenth-century music from the court of Burgundy, the two great composers here being Dufay and Binchois.

Of course, David Munrow’s performances, fascinating and rivetingly interesting as they are, were shaped by his own interests and research at the time, and the booklet notes point out that since then “scholarship and performance practices have moved on healthily”, which I interpret to mean that today nobody would dream of performing this music the way Munrow did: for instance, he has most of the songs accompanied by a whole plethora of ancient instruments, although today it is generally agreed that works from this period should be sung unaccompanied or with minimal instrumental support. Munrow also performs some of the songs as purely instrumental pieces, a legitimate decision perhaps. Munrow also uses the two countertenors James Bowman and Charles Brett for many of the songs, and not everyone will appreciate being bombarded with their somewhat forced androgynous falsetto for nearly three hours; personally, it was the singing of Martyn Hill, tenor, and Geoffrey Shaw, baritone, which delighted my ear during these sessions. Along with the instruments, of course: slide trumpet, cornett, shawm, crwth, fiddle, rebec, citole and so on, plus several tracks with the amazing Christopher Hogwood playing an organ that sounds, at least, very old – unfortunately, the otherwise good liner notes give no details concerning the instruments used.

The Old French texts are printed in full with English translations, so it is possible to follow every nuance. Exceptionally good value for money! – For more historically-informed performances of music of this kind, I suggest searching names such as Gothic Voices, Hilliard Ensemble or Binchois Consort.

5 out of 5 stars If 6 were available, this would get them!.......2002-02-16

Lovely, beautiful, amazing, charming, and vital. I'll not replicate the previous reviewer, though my favorites differ from his, but I bought this on LP 25 years ago and it changed my life. These are exhilarating performances, that move you effortlessly through time and space into a world both far away and very, very close. So much great music, wonderfully performed. Take a chance--it might change your life as well!

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest early music performances ever recorded.......2001-09-03

And an intriguing work of scholarship besides. This was originally released back in the early 1970's by the late David Munrow as a three album box set.

The first part of this recording is basically dedicated to Machaut and his contemporaries. The chanson -Amours me fait desirer- remains striking to this day, with its unusual leap in its first measures. -Amis tout dous- is a lovely miniature, and so also is the monophonic -Quant je sui mis au retour-. But the high point of this part of the record is -Quant j'ay l'espart-, a duet between countertenor and bass cornetto (a serpent?), understated and heartbreaking.

The second part is weirdness from the Avignon court of the Popes, the time when rhythmic notation got more sophisticated, and composers grew more experimental. The unusual chromaticism of -Fumeux fume- is given a great performance here. The -Tre fontane- estampie is given a reading here that is truly frenzied. -Plasanche, ou tost- is a lovely song. You also get rhythmic oddities like -Le greygnour bien-.

The third album nears Renaissance music, and focuses on Dufay and Binchois. Loud instruments like sackbuts and shawms are featured on pieces like -Donnes l'assault-, which seems risky, but sometimes works. The usually quiet pieces on the -La Spagna- ground are here given a marching-band performance on loud winds. The real high points here, though, are the motet -O tres piteulx-, Binchois absolutely gorgeous -Amoureux suy-, and the setting of Petrarch's -Vergine bella-.

This is a definitive early music performance that should never be allowed to go out of print. My only complaint with the CD edition is that it lacks some of the more extensive notes that came with the phonograph record booklet.

Here are five and a half hours of little-known music dating from the mid-12th century to the start of the 16th. Some of it comes from France (Provence, in particular), some from Spain (songs of praise to the Virgin Mary--many in amazing dance rhythms), some from Italy (songs of love and war of the troubadours). There are instrumentals with great vigor, complicated vocal works, chant, the expected music of praise, and a few unexpectedly ribald--almost lewd--songs. Taken a CD at a time, this is a magnificent journey, but be warned: being stuck in the Middle Ages for too long might make you yearn for those simple, high-minded times. --Robert Levine

3 out of 5 stars but what are they saying?.......2006-06-06

This is, musically, a wonderful set. But beware: there are no song text translations; a fatal oversight for six CDs of almost exclusively vocal music by composers to whom text was as important as melody, and in languages that don't exist anymore. In that regard, it was very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars A heapin' helpin' of early music.......2005-10-14

Wonderful from start to finish, this set is quite a sampler, with enjoyable selections performed and recorded well. I suspect some accomodation is being made to the comtemporary listener here and some of the performances may not be 100% "historically accurate." But so what? I've been listening to this at home and while out and about on my iPod. There's quite a variety here which causes the set to avoid the "sameness" of many other sets of this type I've purchased. And the price is defnitely right, particularly for a used copy. What've you got to lose? Give it a shot!

4 out of 5 stars Exclent cd for mediaeval music........1999-11-09

If your just getting into music from this time period this is the cd for you. It gives samples of music that dates from the 1100s to the 1400s.

4 out of 5 stars An instrument with more than thousand years of existence!.......2006-04-03

In spite of the fact the harp is possibly the oldest musical instrument, its sonorities are unlimited. In the XIX Century, the French and Russian composers took into account it. Curiously, Carl Reineceke showed an unusual interest by it; this historical transition toward the raising Century, where Joaquin Rodrigo a renowned pupil of Paul Dukas, nourished his muse in Los Sones del la Giralda.

But to be honest there has always been a visible contempt about it, and has been relegated as a curtain instrument to remark certain anima states. With the Musical Impressionism many composers seemed to understand the multiple expressive possibilities of the harp, but the effervescence would not last so long.

This is a very selected set that includes some one the most traditional Opus of the harp. Since the lyric and naive Francois Adrian Boldieau ` s concert to the hyper romantic Gliere `s Concerto.

Absolutely recommended for all those who love this instrument. You will additionally find out a very high performance level, along both CD' s.

And considering this bargain price, the temptation is enormous, don' t you?

Great CD collection! The volume on the particular track I was looking for was recorded rather low, but otherwise, it is a perfect collection. Some of the other tracks I had not heard and they were magnificent!

Elena Polonska + Harp = Beautiful. When I noted that Elena Polonska performed music from the Middle Ages to the the 20th century on the harp, I knew I had to have this recording. I have heard her play the harp, on other CD's, and listening to her skillful playing is a delight for anyone who enjoys classical music. The other artists were not known to me, so listening to this CD was a chance to become acquainted with some other wonderful harpists, too. I plan to buy this CD for holiday gifts for friends.

Great interpretation on this tribute to magnificient Early music player as David Munrow, superb! principally at the CD number one! thanks...

5 out of 5 stars A landmark recording, finally on CD.......2005-07-11

David Munrow is often credited as an essential force in the revival of old instruments for modern performance; while many felt that this would be a passing fad, old instrument performance seems as strong as ever today, some 30 years later. I first obtained an LP set of "The Art of the Recorder" in 1980; it immediately became and has remained one of my favorites. I've been waiting for a CD reissue of since I got my first CD player. In its LP form, the audio textures were novel and enrapturing to me even in its 1970's audio, and Testament has carefully transferred the EMI recording to compact disc.

Speaking as a music lover, the repertoire in "The Art of the Recorder" went a long way to feed my interest in early music, spanning from medieval to 20th century works, solo recorders to ensembles that represent all the musical instruments, including vocal selections from the late baroque. The performance practices may seem a bit dated now (perhaps the baroque era more than others), but it's played with liveliness and conviction from start to finish.

The CD set also includes 36 tracks from Munrow's "Instruments of the Middle Ages". In the LP form where I first knew it, Munrow narrates with descriptions of the instruments; the narration is unfortunately absent, and the audio transfer sounds fuzzy compared with my memory of the LP. But it's still nice to have if you want to hear a gittern contrasted with a citole.

If you collect period instrument recordings, I heartily recommend "The Art of the Recorder" for your library.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible and Classical.......2004-07-10

Peter Blanchette's choice of music and the recording are simply awesome. This album is so good, in fact, that I am writing this good review despite the fact that I ordered a guitar transcription of one of the songs and never heard back from him(didn't get it, nor did Mr. Blanchette cash the check). This music is THAT good. Trust me, buy this CD because it is one of the greatest musical works I have come across, but don't bother ordering a transcription when you realize how great the music really is :).

4 out of 5 stars This is what you're looking for.......2001-10-09

I have seen Peter Blanchette twice now. The first time, I bought his CD, "The Broken Style", which is my favorite (as first purchases of artist's CDs will usually be), and when I saw him a second time I bought this one. This is a great recording to relax to. It's great just when you want to work without the distraction of words, yet will still focus you and let your imagination wander to another time. It's a great collection.

4 out of 5 stars a wonderful atmosphere of noise.......1999-10-08

I just recently got into classical music. I got into it because I purchased a classical guitar and was looking for music to play. When I first heard Bach I knew that is what I wanted to play. I came across this c.d. while looking for bach on classical guitar. When I listened to it, I was amazed. It creates such a great atmosphere of sound almost as if there was three or four guitars playing. The horn sections just add to overwhelming mood. This c.d. is great to listen to on a rainy day, when you are studying, or when you wake up and cook breakfast. It sets a great background for just about anything.

5 out of 5 stars The best 11-string guitar player in the world!.......1999-08-26

This recording was made with Blanchette's self-designed "archguitar," which is a combination of a lute and a guitar. It sounds like nothing I've ever heard, and his way of playing is at the same time very modern and yet feels ancient. I play it all the time.
