Highly recommended for Sheila fans.......2001-02-23

She is hardly known in the Anglo-American world today but, in the late 70s and early 80s, this artist had major hit singles throughout Europe with 'Love me Baby', 'Singing in the Rain' and 'Spacer'. 'Spacer' was written and produced by none other than Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers.

This album, however, concentrates on the earlier part of Sheila's career which sky rocketed in France in 1963 with 'L'école est finie' and 'Sheila'. The album is a must for fans who prefer her earlier French songs from the sensitive melodies like 'Ecoute ce disque', 'Adios Amor', 'Bang Bang' and 'Gondoles a Venise' to the more upbeat 'Le folklore Americain' where the artist sings praise to the American folklore music that she likes.

For those who have not heard of Sheila, I would also recommend this album as an introduction to her charm and diversity of style. Once hooked, you'll want more. Of course, it helps to understand French.

Each song has a special appeal to the heart as each tells a story. 'Adios Amor' is about a heart-broken separation, 'Bang Bang' about a long lost teenage love, and 'Patrick mon chéri' mourns a separation after a summer vacation.

'La Famille', 'L'heure de la sortie', 'Petite Fille de Français Moyen' and 'Le Cinéma' contain amusing lyrics about about more mundane matters.

Sheila has ventured into English speaking songs in the latter part of her career and recently made a come back. Her more recent albums 'Live a l'Olympia' (1998) and 'Dense' (1999)are also highly recommended.

If you want to hear nothing but her English songs, I'd recommend 'King of the World' and 'Singing in the Rain'.

Adamo is always a delight.......2002-10-20

Adamo is one of Europe's finest and most poetic singer/songwriters. He was born in Italy, but he's known as a French singer, the language nearly all his songs are written in, and the one he seems to be most comfortable singing in...though he has many CDs in Italian, Spanish, and German.
His voice has a sweet beauty, and his romantic songs are deeply emotional and moving, but he also has a comedic, lighthearted side to him, as in the humorous "La Barbu sans Barbe".

The most famous song on this collection is "Inch Allah" ("God Willing"), which is like a prayer for peace in the Middle East, and it's a marvelous composition...other popular favorites are "Tombe la Neige", "La Nuit", and "Jaime".
Though there are other compillations that have included a larger and better selection of songs, like the wonderful "Les Indispensables de Adamo" which would be my pick as his best, this still deserves 5 stars, because Adamo is a one in a million 5 star kind of guy.
