Album Description

International reggae icon Banton, a.k.a. Gargamel, comes full circle with his first pure dancehall collection in over a decade. This fiery seventeen-song set features the production wizardry of such industry giants as Steely & Cleevie and Sly & Robbie. The street single, "Nothing", is a hard-edged dancehall gem already receiving airplay at specialty and mixshow radio. The lead commercial release, "Fast Lane", is a classy track that boasts a more reflective Buju chatting hypnotic, lyrical verse over an unconventional riddim steeped in jazzy, rare grooves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-02-08

This CD is one of his greatest. I'm glad he released this one because it sure got nice and worn out in my car. The first song, he comes out hard. I wish he would have sung more of these songs at his concert that I attended in the fall. He still wants to wear out his Til Shiloh cuts which indeed are classics but he is so talented that everything he comes out with is a classic. But this Too Bad CD is nothing to fall asleep on. Get it if you don't have it already.

5 out of 5 stars he's definitely "one of the best".......2007-01-20

a very balanced album. There's a song for different kinds of moods, I like most 'til it bend,me & ounu and try offa yah, these are great for weekend parties. There are also great songs for quiet moods; songs like lonely night and Don & Dupes which I play over and over 'cause its briliant.

5 out of 5 stars Go, Buju!!!!!!.......2006-12-29

He's so funny, what he does. Too bad for his critics, I guess. Too bad for "uppity Rastas". Too bad for those who don't realize when people change. Too bad for people who wish to hide the past. Too bad for the imitators who fail and get VEX. Too bad for those who haven't seen this man perform! Too bad for deaf people - they cannot enjoy this - for there is nary a song on this cd which isn't too TOO bad.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 5 Stars!!.......2006-11-20

It has all been said. The album is great. No dispute.
What makes this album even more special though is the appreciation of the dancehall history lesson that is bound up in this package.
Buju Banton exploded on the scene in Jamaica as the most gruff-voiced teenager you ever did hear in 1991-1992 with a song called 'Browning'. His meteoric rise saw him to the international scene within 2 years, and the rest we know...But he turned to Rastafarianism and his music soon began to reflect that, and the rough, mean, fast-paced style known as hardcore became less. Lately, some began to count him out of mainstream dancehall.
Amazingly Buju returns to hardcore, almost right where he left off, just to demonstrate the force that has never left him. And he calculatedly brings a world of deja-vu with him, almost as if willfully trying to demonstrate his convictions about where dancehall should stay rooted. Look at a few things...
At least 14 of the 17 riddim tracks use an old-school approach of about 100bpm or less which takes us back to the days when Buju first entered the dancehall.
In fact 'Hey Bwoy', is voiced on a riddim which Buju himself was the first to record in 1991 with the tune 'Man Fi Dead'. He gives a different treatment on the riddim track updated by a different producer, now called Petty Thief. (Back then this riddim actually was derived from another called The Soap and later reinvented as Sudd)
The title track takes us back to 1992 on a subliminal level. The riddim for 'Too Bad' has its origins in the 1992 Penthouse studios in Jamaica when it was created by Dave Kelly. Kelly recorded Buju Banton`s 'Batty Rider' on the track and it was an instant and lasting hit. The track itself carries the name Gi-Gi, and was recently resurrected by another producer. Buju places his mark on the new rendering of Gi-Gi. As with 'Hey Bwoy', the tune remains very distinct from its predecessor but still manages to cast a shadow over the past, helping to make this album a different type of collectors` item.
Buju then digs out one of the oldest renditions of a musical score called the Taxi riddim, AS IS, to display his skills. The instrumental or version used is OVER 20 YEARS OLD, from a time when Buju was but a schoolboy fan of the music. That decision has produced the now massively famous 'Driver'.
As if that wasn`t enough he invites veteran singer Pinchers onto the set to reinvent a tune sung by Pinchers in his prime. The song is 'Don', also TWO DECADES old, long before Buju could dream of the success that is his today. The updated version 'Don and Dupes' replaces all of Pinchers with Buju except for the chorus.
There is really little need to discuss the flow, lyrics, delivery, etc. Buju is unquestionably at his hardcore best here. Few would disagree. It`s such a well put together set! Pulled from his work over the last 2 years, with some added strokes of previously unreleased genius. But there is another reason to get this album in your collection. I think this is a clever collectors` item because of the way it embraces the history of dancehall as a separate genre. It also makes the point that dancehall could do well without being diluted.

4 out of 5 stars Real Dancehall.......2006-10-28

Buju delivers pure unadulterated dancehall tracks. The cd is one of the best that I have heard in a long time. This cd blows Beenie Man's cd away. This is how original dancehall should sound.

When Buju Banton emerged from the Kingston, Jamaica, slums in the early '90s, he stirred controversy with a breed of dancehall steeped in the same obsessions with gunplay, sexism, and homophobia that characterized hardcore American hip-hop. But after converting to Rastafarianism and scratching to find more socially conscious and deeply rooted music on 1993's Voice of Jamaica, Banton (born Mark Myrie) proved that his conscience and creative restlessness are driven by more than mere commercial shrewdness on this album, his true breakthrough. Banton sounds like a changed man from the get-go. The spiritually uplifting title prologue segues into a chuckle and the resignation of "'Til I'm Laid to Rest." While Banton ruminates on everything from love and spirituality to geopolitics, his electro dancehall clichés have largely given way to organic, often spiritual music whose African influences are worn as a badge of honor. Banton has been credited with reinventing dancehall here, and it's hard to argue otherwise. His gruff voice bounds from its previous monotonous rap ruts into a warm and joyous newfound expressiveness that lights up the infectious "Murderer," the fatalistic "Not an Easy Road," and the party-time "Hush Baby Hush" (a reworking of the Zodiacs chestnut "Stay"). Banton even finds some folksy resonance with the acoustic-guitar backed "Untold Stories." Guest vocalists Garnett Silk ("Complaint") and Wayne Wonder ("What Ya Gonna Do") add some contemporary R&B touches to Banton's already considerably expanded sense of dynamics. This remastered reissue features three bonus cuts: the B-sides "Rampage" and "Sensemilia Persecution" and a previously Jamaica-only remix of "Champion." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Buju Banton brought forth a brave and honest testimonial album.......2007-06-25

This album can easily satisfy any reggae lover and unexpectedly grab hold onto non-reggae listeners into its clutches. Buju is masterful on the mic with his rough sounding style and the production is perfect. It's one of the Best reggae album I own that is constantly on rotation when I'm in the mood for this genre. Buju open the album with the brief a cappella psalm, "Shiloh," which is inspirational and extraordinary to hear. On the next two tracks he explodes with sound and feeling with first "Til I'm Laid to Rest," a melody that is intertwines with an homage to Africa and his faith in the Promised Land. He secondly roles in with one of the most powerful and rawest track "Murderer." It's emotionally written in the repercussion of his friend's killings in which Buju struggles with his grief and fierce desire for vengeance. "Champion" and "It's all Over," proves Buju is still a rudebwoy on these tracks that's just phenomenal. "Untold Stories," is one pretty haunting song that reflects on the world around him that's pleasant to the ears.

It's "Not an Easy Road," shows Banton vulnerable side and continues on opening his soul to the world with "Wanna Be Loved," and also exposes his loneliness on "What Ya Gonna Do" joined by Wayne Wonder that I can't get enough of because there great to mellow out to. On "Complaint" Buju is praising Jah and spreading the heathens before him. "Chuck It So" takes a similar attitude, which he takes on a Big Man, with the 2 Friends Crew softening his vicious assault. Buju turned a 1960 classic "Stay," with "Hush Baby Hush," by slightly adding a lighter note to this event. The last track "Champion [remix]" is a pleasant addition because it reminds me of my club years, the DJ's use to play this number religiously and had a lot of people moving.

`Til Shiloh' is a rare and gentler side to Buju that will have you constantly hitting the repeat button. It's a necessity for any reggae fan and with that I also recommend the album `Inna Heights.'

5 out of 5 stars Of course it's good, it's Buju..............2007-02-23

Of course this cd is good it's Buju Banton! This is actually my second copy b/c my last one was scratched all to crap. Buju Banton has dominated reggae for quite some time now, maybe since the Marley's, for sure since the late 90's. "Murderer" is by far the best of the many great songs on the album and one of his best songs ever and of course "Champion" and even more so the remix of "Champion" is probably the second best track on there. I do enjoy his album "Voice of Jamaica" better just b/c every single beat, lyric, and tune is just the ultimate rythmatic reggae sounds ever, which he did the same in this album. But if you enjoyed any of his other albums you will not be disappointed with this one, "Til' Shiloh" is a must have for any reggae and/or Buju Banton fan.

5 out of 5 stars Essential to any reggae collection.......2007-02-01

This album is really good. I can listen to pretty much every single song on it. Its hard to say which songs are the best, "Til Im laid to rest", "muderer".....like I said, theyre all petty good.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-08-24

With the release of 1995's Til Shiloh, reggae's premiere dancehall DJ proved he is as powerful a singer as he is a chanter. A quintessential Jamaican genius, Buju is a nexus of everything about that music culture that awes and frustrates outsiders who fall under its spell. This 21-track follow-up is every bit Shiloh's equal, even an unimaginable step forward. "Our Father in Zion," "Destiny," and "African Pride" swell the heart as full as any of Marley's compositions, while "Redder Than Red," "My Woman Now," and "Love Dem Bad" prove Buju's still dancehall's Mr. Mention. Best of all, Buju reconciles reggae's divided soul, suggesting that the mountaintop Rastaman and the ghetto rude boy are one and the same. --Elena Oumano

Another great Buju cd. Must be included in any reggae or dancehall collection. One of Jamaica's great sons of music!

4 out of 5 stars Buju Buju Buju.......2005-11-09

Buju is by far one of the best reggae artist there is. Needless to say he is my favorite and anything he touches is great, his positive messages in his music keeps him on top. Destiny,Circumstances,Love Sponge and Murderer are just a few of his best and my favorites. pick up his Ultimate Collection CD, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Never Gets Old.......2005-07-08

Inna Heights has been one of my favorite cds since it came out. I listen to pretty much everything, and while the 11 other CDs I keep in the visor slots have changed time and time again over the years, this one has remained a constant.

I should also mention that I purchased this CD five times within the first two years it came out because my friends kept stealing it or borrowing it and "forgetting" to give it back. Was a great choice to listen to in my discman while running track. Now the whole album is on my husband's ipod.

And its really for everyone. While I LOVE Dancehall/ Reggae, even non-fans choose to listen to this CD in my car. These passengers include my mother and my kids.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Good.......2005-07-06

First off, I'll always give a Buju cd a five star rating. Second,I'll give my own opinion:
Hills and Valleys can't go wrong - just a good message
Destiny is a private song to think about yourself
Cry No More proves that Buju has many sisters
LOVE DEM BAD make I love being a woman (a true)
Love Sponge is a song to sing to anyone who rock you right
This cd is good, too many songs on it, but good

4 out of 5 stars Buju!.......2005-03-13

Buju Banton is my favorite reggae artist. What I like about his music is the message that he's sending out. The positivity. And the beats that are produced. However, Inna Heights is not my favorite, Til Shiloh is. Inna heights is still a good album though. Hills and valleys, cry no more, and love sponge are my favorites on this album.

In the early 1990s, teenager Buju Banton achieved notoriety in Jamaica's raucous dancehall scene with a series of controversial songs. But as he matured, he dropped the "guns and girls" lyrics of his youth in favor of songs that reflected his growing interest in social and spiritual matters. Ultimate Collection gathers 18 of Banton's more socially conscious songs including "Murderer," a powerful cry of rage directed at the killer of one of his friends, and "How the World a Run," a theological dissertation set to an irresistible dancehall riddim. Banton has a remarkably wide musical range, and selections such as "No Respect," which features a sonically complex digital production, "Untold Stories," an introspective song backed by a simply strummed acoustic guitar, and "Hills and Valleys," with its old-style roots feel, demonstrate his mastery of most of reggae's musical offshoots. Banton's music is a throwback to the days of Bob Marley, a time when the most positive messages were set to the strongest beat, and the best songs touched your heart and mind even as they made you get up and dance. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars this guy hits up both styles!!.......2004-05-10

buju banton has the ability to sing both roots reggae songs, (ie. untold stories), and dancehall tunes, (ie. love sponge). i must admit i am more a fan of the roots reggae style it holds more meaning to me. i do however like several of the dancehall guys such as buju's stuff, barrington levy, sizzla and some of beenie man's stuff too. basically if you like alittle of both, then buju gets it done and doesn't spoil the reggae with any of that hip-hop dancehall like sean paul.

4 out of 5 stars BUJU IS COOL.......2003-12-11

look, whoever says that Buju Banton is a disgrace to reggae they got something wrong with them. okay, maybe he's not the best, but he is pretty damn good and has a totally individual vocal style. i am a rasta (at least i try) and i have a reggae band and i know that he is good. personally i like the songs 'murderer' and 'untold stories' and 'Buju movin'. they have a good feel to them

Great lyrics in the dancehall reggae tunes. All of his best songs and greatest hits on one CD. If you're a fan of Buju Banton or just reggae music in general...buy it!!!!

4 out of 5 stars This brings it all together!!.......2001-06-04

This CD takes you through Buju's evolution as an artist. From the first track, you can envision 'BUJU MOVIN', through the 'Hills and Valleys' of his career and maturing to be who he has ultimately become, one of the greatest reggae artists of our time. He has successfully become a more concious and spiritual artist without alienating his core dancehall fans. Most of his hip-hop cross-over prone peers are left scratching their heads saying "How he a do dat?" 'Untold Stories' still stands out as the class of this album. Very basic instruments, guitar and congo drums, make you focus on his political laments, very "Bob Marleyesque" I wish more songs from 'Til Shiloh' where included in this but I can live with this. This is an excellent compilation and should serve to satisfy people who want to hear Buju for the first time but are unsure of what album to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the good old days (4.5 stars).......2007-03-08

This album showcases Buju in his early years before he adopted his Rastafarian faith and became more spirtual. You won't find any conscious roots type songs on here, instead this is just straight up dancehall. My favorite tracks are "Batty Rider," Have Fi Get Yu Tonight," "Love How Di Gal Dem Flex," "Hotness," the infectious "Bogle," "Good Looking Gal," "Gone A Lead," the wicked, bass-heavy "Good Good," the controversial "Boom Bye Bye," "Stamina Daddy," the fast, uptempo "Mine Behind the Wine," the smooth R&B-influenced "Wicked Dickie" (the female singer provides nice vocals), and the last track "Bonafide Love." Although there really isn't a bad song on here, there are a couple of tracks that I feel didn't quite fit the rest of the album such as "Why Should I," and "Miss Joan" (not a bad song, but the chorus is sort of annoying). Conspicuous by their absence are "Man Fi Dead," and "Love Me Browning" (would have been better if these REPLACED the aforementioned tracks). Overall however, it is a excellent compilation from Buju B.

    1 out of 5 stars Murder Music.......2004-12-05

If you like homophobic murder music, you'll love this! Banton advocates killing gays and lesbians in a number of songs, and is wanted for questioning in the attack of six gay men. [...]

His song Boom Bye Bye talks about shooting gay men with Uzis as well as pouring acid on their heads. "Burn him up badly, like you would burn an old tyre wheel"

It has been really hard to find the 1988 original Never Give In album. It's been out of production for sometime. It's a classic and you can't even find it. What's up with that! Anyhow, if you don't have the 1988 original then this album is practically it. If you are a true Pato fan this is a must for your collection. It will keep you on your toes groovin all night!

5 out of 5 stars Growing up with Pato.......2002-03-16

I literally grew up listening to this album because my older brother loved it. I had it in vinyl. Listen to Pato and give him a chance. His sound is so addicting.

5 out of 5 stars I Love it. Makes you want to move........1999-04-25

I absolutely love this. I used to have it but it was stolen. I am trying to find it again. I listened to it more than anything else that I own.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Okay collection.......2005-03-15

Pato Banton is the kind of singer whose material is uneven and who never cultivated a total image for himself, so a collection of his songs is fraught with inconsistency. "Bubbling Hot" is a great song performed with Ranking Roger. It's reminiscent of the rub a dub style of Yellowman and Fathead. You almost expect to hear a "ribbit" in the background. While Pato's sense of humor comes through on "Bubbling Hot," "Don't Sniff Coke, and "Gwarn!," his great, funny song "Hello Tosh" is missing from this CD, and that's a shame. Pato Banton has this way of working a funny style without raunchy slack content, and the more of those kind of songs from him, the better. He's a specialist at being funny and safe. His vocal imitations of his mother are classic. On the other hand, Pato also dabbles in roots and consciousness, which doesn't always work out. There are only so many "no war, everybody get along" lyrics you can take before Pato starts to wear thin. "Wize Up" and "Save Your Soul" are as flat as your high school guidance counsellor. Conscious lyrics aren't his strong point, but the consciousness role is a role he insists on cultivating. My opinion is that Pato Banton's best work is The Mad Professor Captures Pato Banton. Just compare the version of "Gwarn!" from that cd, and you'll see. On that one, he even pulls off the role of rootsman well ("Nuff Kind of Dred"). If you like reggae and dub, go with the Mad Professor's production of Pato. If you want that pop, early-90s party feel and "Baby Come Back" (yuck!), go with Collections.

    5 out of 5 stars What a fun CD!.......2000-07-16

I definately enjoyed this CD. Great Reggae, that's the only way to describe it. Buy it!

    5 out of 5 stars real good.......2000-05-11

I already was fanatic of Reggae when I heard Pato the first time. But he is quite different. A little bit unique. The one you could best compare him with is Damian Marley, but Pato sings his own songs...

in fact he's got a great combination of Rhytm, Melodies, Lyrics and Soul. I think, his Music Rhythms are the best of all Reggae Artists.

(if my English was bad, please excuse this - it's not my language)

I first heard of Buju Banton through the Hellcat records compilation "Give 'em The Boot 2". namely, the "Misty Days" song where he worked with Rancid.

    That song is amazing.

anyway, i picked up this CD...and it was completely different from anything i previously owned.

which was nice, a good switch. It's Unique and Wonderful. and Reggae-Riffic.
