The first thing that strikes you about Randy Crawford's performance on Feeling Good is the soulful ease with which she moves through the songs, whether sh''s bluesily channeling Nina Simone on Billie Holiday's "Tell Me More and More and Then Some" or recasting Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking" as a bouncy confection. The second thing that impresses you is how well she plays off the spare but supple acoustic piano of Joe Sample, who contributed the lively arrangements and co-produced the album with Tommy LiPuma. Nearly 30 years since she teamed with Sample and the Crusaders on the hit, "Street Life," both artists have left any stylistic excesses behind to deliver one of their breeziest efforts. Though the material is nothing if not eclectic--the Leo Sayer hit, "When I Need You," the Newley-Bricusse Broadway classic, "Feeling Good," and the jazz standard "But Beautiful" are also in the mix--Crawford's gospel-fed strength and not-to-be-underrated jazz phrasing hold the center. In bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Anthony Wilson, she has two name jazz players behind her, in addition to studio veterans Dean Parks and Ray Parker Jr. on guitars and Steve Gadd on drums. --Lloyd Sachs
Album Description
Randy Crawford and Joe Sample's new collaboration is certain to impact the world as did their first collaboration, the international hit "Street Life." The CD, produced by two (2) time Grammy winner for Record of the Year, Tommy LiPuma, is an amazing duet between Randy's incredible voice and Joe's impeccable piano. The songs, all classics in their own right combine older standards such as "Feeling Good", "All Night Long," and "But Beautiful," with the more contemporary "When I Need You" first recorded by Leo Sayer, and Peter Gabriel's "Lovetown" from the movie Philadelphia. Steve Gadd-drums, and Christian McBride-bass, round out the trio.

"Feeling Good" Randy Crawford/Joe Sample .......2007-07-13
In general, I am always very pleased with music by Randy Crawford, and this CD which has her paired with Joe Sample is superb. It is a blend of previous recordings and new songs which have all be arranged by Sample. I cannot say enough good things about this CD. Any money spent to purchase a copy is money well spent!
Feeling Good in Istanbul.......2007-07-13
I attended their concert last night in Istanbul, Turkey. They played their songs from this album and expectedly, Street Life, and some other tunes. I had a great time and the music was a feast. The crowd was enchanted by Randy's voice, and Mr. Sample had a very good connection with the audience. My favorites were her interpretations of Feeling Good and Tell Me More and More. I hope she sings a lot more in the years to come.
Jazz at its finest........2007-06-17
I am a big Randy Crawford fan and a big Joe Sample fan. However, I did not know they had collaborated previously. I was first introduced to Randy while on a business trip to Anchorage just prior to the release of the Cajun Moon album. I was listening to a smooth jazz station while returning to my hotel from dinner, when this absolutely captivating song came on. I sat in the hotel parking lot till it finished in the hopes the station would tell me what I had just heard. Alas, it was Cajun Moon. I have subsequently bought all of her albums, and not one disappoints.
Although I had heard Joe Sample previously, I really became a big fan while listening to WJZZ in Philadelphia while on another business trip. They played X Marks The Spot from the Pecan Tree album, which I ran right out and bought.
As I have continued to listen to these two stellar performers I have always hoped they might one day do a project together. When I found Feeling Good on Amazon.com recently it was like a dream come true. This is truly jazz at its very finest. Silky smooth from beginning to end. For anyone not familiar with the work of these two fine performers, here is your chance to hear the very best the world of jazz has to offer.
Excellent combination.......2007-06-11
I have played this CD until I will probably have to buy another one. Randy and Joe really compliment each other. I look forward to more CDs by them.
Love it! Love it! Love it!.......2007-06-08
Randy's voice has not changed since I was first introduced to her over 20 years ago. Joe Sample is brilliant!

An OK CD.......2007-01-09
This CD was alright. If I had the chance again I would probably not get it. It's not that the music is bad, it's just that I had heard a song by Kevin Gilbert on internet progressive radio once and it was really good and creative. This CD was for the most part just regular music, so I thought it was a little boring.
Musical Genius Too Late Discovered.......2006-07-19
Back in 2004 I was listening to an internet radio station, when this tune, TEA FOR ONE, came over the cheap computer speakers I was using. The melody was haunting. I checked around and found it was a song composed and done by a fellow named Kevin Gilbert. I also found out that Mr. Gilbert died in 1996. So I went on Amazon to purchase the CD THUD by Kevin Gilbert and was quite pleased to find out that it came with a bonus CD, with a cover of Led Zeppelin's KASHMIR. This album has feeling of longing, displayed beautifully in the song TEA FOR ONE. Come to find out Kevin Gilbert, while very talented, just could not get the major record labels to acknowledge that talent. The well known, and now pop singer, Cheryl Crow was his protege. He also worked with Madonna on the Dick Tracy soundtrack, and at one time was considered as a replacement for Phil Collins, when Mr. Collins left the band Genesis.
THUD, while not original in approach, was a solo effort much on par with earlier solo efforts by folks like Paul McCartney, Al Kooper, Emmit Rhodes, and Todd Rundgren. These solo efforts, I always felt, best give expression to the artist's, in this case, tortured soul. Gilbert expresses that longing for the recognition of his efforts in songs like WAITING and SHRUG.
A gifted musician, Kevin Gilbert, apparently was a self-taught Cellist. If you purchase the THUD CD try and get the issue with the bonus CD, if only for the cover of KASHMIR. Gilbert really does make the classic Zeppelin tune his own. I have played THUD for family and friends and some of the tunes have left them in emotional shambles. TEA FOR ONE is the anthem for all who have longed for love. Despite his tragic end, we can only hope that more people discover the genius of Kevin Gilbert.
Flawless.......2006-05-23
Wow... where to begin on this. I first heard Kevin Gilbert in the early 90's on his Toy Matinee effort. Toy Matinee was an interesting mix of stunningly crafted and produced pop rock, with touches that reminded me of everything from Pink Floyd to Steely Dan and a whole spectrum in between. Fast forward about 12 years where I ran across a commemorative disc of the original Toy Matinee release with extra cuts and some liner notes covering the creation of the disc and the unfortunate death of Kevin Gilbert in '96. I was sort of taken aback and after doing some on-line research, I learned Kevin Gilbert had been involved in ALL sorts of musical projects, many of them I was familiar with but not aware of Gilbert's involvement (Spock's Beard and Sheryl Crowe being two of them). I also ran across "Thud" and decided to "one-click" it and give it a try.
Wow again. The reviews here do a decent job indicating the complexity and variety of music on this disc, but until you hear it yourself, it's hard to appreciate. Take biting commentary, insightful (and heartfelt) observations about relationships, human nature, politics, and the like; mix it with a variety of popular (and less popular) music styles immaculately produced; add dry, witty, and emotional vocal performances from Kevin and you have a masterpiece of an album. To be honest, the CD as a whole almost plays like some "record label sampler" with no coherent theme or style other than stunning musicianship (which Kevin--a multi-instrumentalist--largely performed himself) and phenomenal production.
All I can say is if you liked Toy Matinee, and are open to an eclectic selection of musical styles (still predominantly based in sometimes-jazzy, sometimes-folky, and sometimes-poppy rock), you'll likely find something moving on this disc as well.
Thoughtful, angry and heartbreaking.......2005-12-13
Recently on the Camper Van Beethoven mailing list folks were posting their top-10 Desert Island Discs. Out of the 3000-or-so CDs that I own I could only get the list down to 50, but I can tell you that if I had to pick only one CD to hear for the rest of my life it would be this one.
Of course, it's so biting and heartbreaking in its insights, intelligence and emotional depth that I can rarely stand to listen to it. If you wander into my office and I have tears streaming down my face, you can guess what I'm listening to. That said, the tone of the album isn't sad: it's simultaneously angry and outraged, and full of the beauty and regret of this world.
Brilliant and moving!!.......2005-12-11
Have you ever seen a shooting star? Here one minute and gone the next or even a meteor.(I know that's a lame metaphor, but---) For the best review on this masterpiece see (Spiral Mind) I don't think it can be said any better. So, I'll use this space and time to thank Kevin Gilbert for his musical vision and remaining true to himself and his art. Sadly, Mr.Gilbert is no longer with us, but what he has left us truly is beautiful. Mr.Gilbert was never rewarded for his efforts while here, but I believe in Heaven he is reaping all. God Bless,Kevin Gilbert.Peace.

I'm not one known for JAZZ.......2006-12-27
I'll be the first to admit, I have some "off the wall taste" in music and other facets in life. I listen to all genre of music and say.... I like the best of all types of music (rock, pop, r&b, alternative, UK, rap, gansta rap, bluegrass, Indian and minimal country ----- absolute fav is U2). It drives my husband absolutely crazy how I can flip from one song to another. I was recommended to Marcus Miller by a guy at a CD store..... way back when CDs first started out. "Panther" is my absolute favorite of Marcus Miller. THIS CD is a "must have". I tell everyone this is my favorite MM CD (as I have gone off the deep end in search of the "high" I received upon my first purchase of MM). I have to say, I have purchased this disc on NUMEROUS occasions. Thank goodness for internet..... as I was told a long time ago, this was out of production..... First after listening so much, to make sure I had one at home AND in my car. And, I think I lost another one or someone grabbed it up (a thief with great taste). That makes three.... and I have bought for at least one friend..... this is some serious "driving" music. I also used it for the background music of a home video a while back. It is amazing how many other songs and artist have MM in their music. Once you hear it.... it's like.... OMG, that's MM!!!! I have played MM before for friends..... I must say, not everyone "gets" MM.... but they just don't know any better!!!! What a shame! This is definitely a MUST HAVE CD.... probably not my last purchase.... yes, of the SAME CD..... If I was on a desert island and could only have three CDs for the rest of my life.... this would be one of the choices I'd take. Yes, I can say that FO SURE! There's another one for MM..... "Burning down the house!" I'm listening to The Ozell Tapes: Official Bootleg [Live]. It's an OK CD... but get this one instead!!!!!!
Superb bass-driven album........2005-04-25
"The Sun Don't Lie" is one of those albums for me-- maybe I heard it at the right time in my life, maybe it really is that good, but even in the face of what many consider better records, this is my favorite of Marcus Miller's catalog-- certainly, his playing (as superb as it is) would be better on later albums, but I think this is some of his best work.
Marcus Miller is, of course, regarded as one of the great bassists, and with good reason, this album shows that nicely-- from breathtaking plucked runs (the intro to "Panther") to just stunning slap playing ("Rampage"), delicate fretless work ("Moons") and a great solo bass piece ("Mr. Pastorius", originally recorded with Miles Davis). But its the songwriting on this one that really shines, from the delicate "The Sun Don't Lie" to the great funky jazz-rock of "Funny (All She Needs is Love)", the hard swining "Rampage", and the totally brilliant "Panther"-- but what makes Marcus so great is that when his songs are bass driven, he somehow gets away without having a concrete bassline until another solo voice joins, when he steps back into a supportive role on the instrument. And with a generous supporting cast including guest performances by Miles Davis, Kenny Garrett, Wayne Shorter, and Vernon Reid, this album is nothing short of spectacular.
Certainly, if you're a Miles fan looking to explore Marcus' music, this is a great place to start, its how I did. This album is excellent.
Too smooth, but otherwise fantastic.......2003-04-19
Marcus Miller is a fantastic bassist, though "The Sun Don't Lie" doesn't seem to showcase them as well as "M2". The drum machine rhythm tracks make the album too smooth. On the positive side, the songs are good, the solos are excellent, and Miles Davis plays on a track with Living Colour. "Juju" is a brassy version of the Shorter classic, though Marcus smooths out the edges of the original. This is a very good modern jazz disc.
MR. MARCUS.......2002-12-18
...THIS IS MARCUS MILLER. I DARE SAY THAT THE BROTHER CAN DO NO WRONG - MUSICALLY! IF YOU LIKE MARCUS COP EVERY ONE OF HIS ALBUMS FOR MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT.
Thanks, Victor, for reminding me how good this CD is. . . ........2001-10-24
After hearing MM's duet with Victor Wooten on VW's new live CD (LIVE IN AMERICA), I was reminded just how much I love this CD. Even though it is "old" in term of years (released in 1993), I never get tired of these songs. This was one of the first "solo" bass CDs I ever bought, and I was incredibly impressed with Miller's skills, not only on the electric bass, but on the many other instruments he plays, his arranging, and his use of other talents around him. If you look at the liner notes, you don't find many names missing from his list of collaborators on this disc. Even using his kids on "Juju" doesn't come off as being corny or exploitive. "Panther," "Rampage" (with help from Miles Davis), "Mr. Pastorius," "Funny," & "The King Is Gone" stand out, but it's hard to pick just three or four--they are all great songs! This is a great car CD, cranked to make the tires shake as you're doing a cool 75 mph on the highway. . . .
I don't have some vast history of bass listening experience to compare him to, but Marcus Miller is as good as I've heard, and the only electic bass player who has come along since who is even close would be Victor Wooten (whose first solo CD is more of a solo and is about as good). Since this, MM has produced a couple of great discs: TALES & LIVE AND MORE, with his new CD, M2, getting rave reviews. I have ordered it and can't wait to hear it!
Now I'm just waiting for his bass clarinet "solo" CD. . . .

Marcus Miller has served as bassist, arranger, and producer for everyone from Luther Vandross to Miles Davis, and on his fourth solo album, Tales, Miller tries to reconnect the fractured fragments of African American music. He uses samples of recorded interviews with his older musical heroes to set up his own instrumental interpretations of that musical history. For example, spoken-word samples from Davis, Charlie Parker, and Billie Holiday lead into "The Blues," a midtempo blues groove that features both live drums and programmed drums, both jazzy horn lines from saxophonist Kenny Garrett and Larry Graham-like funk lines from Miller himself. The result is not jazz but R&B instrumentals with the sort of smarts and drama this genre rarely delivers anymore. Unlike so many fusion albums that settle for show off virtuosity over predictable grooves, Miller's Tales boasts thought-out compositions that bring together disparate elements in unexpected and rewarding ways. The title track, for example, which opens with a brief monologue by rapper Q-Tip, builds its catchy theme from a sample of the Pointer Sisters' "Yes, We Can Can," features Miller's inventive electric bass lines as the lead melody and then turns the song over to Michael Stewart's expert imitation of Davis' muted trumpet phrases. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:
The sound of Miles Davis.......2006-10-29
This is a great album for Marcus Miller. Obviously all the funky grooves he uses on this CD sound like a continuation of his music with Miles Davis; Michael Stewart contributes muted trumpet in Davis's Style; Marcus Miller's Electric bass is a MAJOR force throughout the entire album; Sounding times like a real bass and times like a great funky soulful guitar.
If you are into some Bass/ Funk, Pop, Jazz and Fusion; or if you are into Miles Davis's Music with the extra bass sound; this album will be a real treat.
a modern bass master.......2004-08-12
The problem with most instrumental solo projects is that they are not usually all that interesting to non-musicians. Marcus has overcome that barrier with this, his finest, solo effort. Smooth, funky, sexy, entertaining, not to mention technically impressive, he plays many instuments besides bass. It is a theme album with short oral anectdotes about the history of black music woven between perfectly placed groove oriented musical statements. "Rush Over" is THE perfect make out song. A truely masterful demonstation of the electric bass taken to but rarely crossing the line of overplaying.
another phat cd.......2001-07-11
This guy is amazing, the quality of jazz he is putting out there is so deep, he has lots of great help, but he wrote the songs. "rush over" is a favorite. The sounds he makes on the bass, everything, the thumps, the plucks, slaps, this cd is well thought out jazz at it's best. Marcus Miller has a new fan. You can't help but turn the volume up. "infatuation" is so bad, as well as "tales". Right off the start from the first track, "the blues", JAMS. What a fantastic jazz cd that has it all, even when he slows it down, he still takes you deep. Also check out "the sun don't lie" his first release, more of the same funky jazz. If you love Victor Wooten or Louis Johnson, you will love Marcus Miller. He is so great, it sounds like there are 2 people playing on 1 bass guitar. This is jazz at it's best. You will enjoy this.
Marcus gets serious about love and life.......2001-05-12
Marcus gets a little deeper and darker on 'Tales'. I love the interludes by all the cats; it adds depth to the musical experience. Since this album is more concept-based, its kind of unfair to pick out favorite tunes. However, 'Forevermore' may be the greatest Bass Guitar Ballad since Jaco did 'A Remark you Made' on Weather Reports' Heavy Weather LP. I mean, it just stays with you, its so hauntingly beautiful. 'Ethiopia' and 'Eric' also stand out, probably because he's using a different sounding bass. While the record doesn't seem to be necessarily geared towards radio formats, 'Tales' is a little more polished than 'The Sun don't Lie'; the tunes are more structured and laid back, and I do like that Bass Clarinet! Mature ears are probably best suited to hear this set of musical 'Tales'.
Another Gem from the Master of the Electric Bass.......2000-12-12
I didn't think it was possible for Miller to come close to the music created on his landmark initial PRA Records release "The Sun Don't Lie". Now being that I am the biggest Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder fan in the world (the album was a tribute to these two heroes of Miller), it would be hard to top "Sun" et,al, but Marcus Miller nearly pulls it off on this effort.
Once again surrounding himself with a stellar cast of musicians ranging from Kenny Garrett on Alto, Michael "Patches" Stewart on the Harmon muted trumpet (ala Miles Davis), Lenny White on Drums and Percussion, Jason Miles wonderful sound programming, Joshua Redman on Tenor Sax, and a smashing vocal by Me'Shell NdegeOcello on "Rush Over", just to name a few on this star-studded album and study in jazz' history and versatility. "Tales" is an attempt to explain the history and experience that IS jazz music. It's quite a successful attempt at that. This sophomore effort by Miller is yet another incredible recording in this journeyman bass players career. I can only hope he releases a "new material" album as soon as possible. My highest recommendation. Five Stars +

Robertos Carlos is always something already expected, that romantic style, the good guy. But this CD have something very special and precious : the bonus track A VOLTA.
A VOLTA is what could be ROBERTO CARLOS, not what he is, is a perfect and new interpretation for this almost 40 years song. His voice is perfect here and the arrangements is so delicate and sweet, the guitar .... it worth the bucks !!!

Bethania sings Roberto.......2003-10-09
Maria Bethania was not always a Roberto Carlos fan.In fact, she is quoted as saying in the mid 60's that she did not even like him. This did change in '67 when she began advising her then rising star brother Caetano Veloso to watch Roberto Carlos TV shows. What made her start liking Robert is beyond us.What made her start loving his work is obvious:him the king of Brazilian romantic appealed to her the queen of Brazilian love songs.1982 saw them team up and produce the chart topper duet,AMIGA.Eleven years later,Maria Bethania sat down and selected her favorite Roberto tunes which she had performed in shows yet neglected to record. When she recorded this epic CD,she produced a million seller. It appealed to so many different people,so many different generations that it sold almost two million copies. My favorites are the slow ones:Voce nao sabe,Costumes and Voce. But you will find Fera Ferida and Detalhes irresistible as well.As cancoes... and Emocoes are as good.Anyway, two million brasileiros will agree with you
Bethania's homage to crooner Roberto Carlos.......2002-01-05
Roberto Carlos started off as a teen rocker in the late 1950s... By the early '70s he shifted gears to become Brazil's answer to Julio Iglesias -- a Spanish-language pop crooner. This is Bethania's tribute to Carlos's work, and it sticks mainly to the cheesier, synthy-er side of his style. If you're a fan of synthy ballads, this might be the record for you...

I first heard Luciana Mello on a fantastic DVD set called Um Barzinho Um Violao which I think means something like "a barstool and a guitar" which is all wonderful brazilian acoustic guitar and vocals. Luciana Mello was a huge standout for her captivating voice and sense of rhythm. This album is more "pop", fairly heavily produced, but it doesn't disappoint. Same great voice, rhythm, and tunes that grow on you the more you listen. The fact it's all in Portuguese is not a problem, you can still feel a lot of meaning in the singing. Someday I won't be surprised to see Luciana Mello is a big success in the U.S.!
Luciana Mello- Olha Pra Ela.......2004-08-30
i picked up a lot of wonderful brasilian music during my stay in Salvador da bahia this summer. This selection includes the great gilberto gil, olodum, gal costa, caetono veloso, and more.
Luciana Mello represents a fresh, vibrant class of brasilian artists who are not out to make a dollar. there is a lot of thoughtfulness behind the lyrics, voice, and rhythms.
now i hate to compare on a global level because i want to respect each artist's background and approach. however, amazon is massive as is the virtual world and i want this lady to get support. so, i will say that if you like les nubians (the r&b plus sisters from paris) you love luciana mello. no doubt.

Every song a joyous masterpiece--Flawless.......2007-03-19
I LOVE this album, it has been a favorite since I stumbled across it in the mid-90's at a listening station. I don't get the parallel given above by another listener to the Spin Doctors and/or Indigo Girls (other faves of mine, but very different, imho). These songs are infectiously joyous and energetic...if anything I would say they more closely resemble Poi Dog Pondering's playful retrospection with some of Rusted Root's energy thrown in. Very complex musically, not one false note. I can't say that about many albums out there.
This is truly unique music. Wish they had done more (or at least that I could find it if they did!) Miraculously good.
melding-melodies for 3.5 stars.......2002-02-01
What would happen if the Indigo Girls and the Spin Doctors (circa '91) collaborated on an album? The answer: The Big Geraniums. The vocal harmonies of the Indigo Girls, sporting a male/female vocal combo, combined with Spin-Doc-like guitar riffs and drum beats (but not as repetitive), make for a fun and enjoyable recording. The track "Days Like These" was featured in a radio beer commercial (Sam Adams?) some years ago. That track in particular has shades of "Little Miss Can't be Wrong" from the Docs, but this is by no means a rip-off/sound-alike act. On the contrary, it's a very original sound, using the influences I mentioned. The vocal harmonies of "Grouper Fish" and "Windows" may conjure up memories of "Galileo" while never sounding like a duplication of the original. Let's give it a solid 3.5 stars. And I hope they release something again, someday (afterall, this was a 1995 release). Enjoy.

If you love Rusted Root, you will love these guys. You can not go wrong with a band that is made from different parts of the world which plays numerous instruments and has great vocals. I purchased this CD over two months ago and I can not stop listening to it.
